Fans of the hugely popular ‘Twilight’ series might be disappointed to hear that the ending of this literary phenomenon wasn’t exactly as they hoped for. Now that the final installment, ‘Breaking Dawn’, is in theaters, it’s time to see how the story of Bella and Edward ends and whether or not it lives up to fans’ expectations.

Bella’s Choice

One of the most heartbreaking scenes in ‘Breaking Dawn’ is the one where Bella finally chooses Jacob’s offer of friendship over Edward’s love story with her. As she walks away from her true love towards an uncertain future, it’s clear that she’s already made up her mind and that there’s nothing he can do to change her mind.

This scene is even more powerful because of how well it was filmed. Instead of using any kind of visual effects to augment the emotions of the scene, Summit Entertainment chose to rely on the actors’ performances and the stunning Canadian backdrop to really drive the point home. Even though we know what happens in the end, it’s still sad to see Bella give up on Edward so easily.

The Future of Bella and Edward

The outlook for Bella and Edward isn’t all bad though. In some ways, it’s actually quite promising. For starters, it looks like Edward will live. In ‘Breaking Dawn’, we see that his injuries from the battle with the vampires weren’t as grave as we thought. Sure, he’s still got a limp, but the doctors were able to repair most of his wounds. This, in turn, makes him more appealing to Bella as she considers various options for their future together.

While it’s sad that Jacob and his friends had to die to provide Bella with an opportunity to become a vampire – it’s also an incredible testament to their friendship that they would want to help her avoid her tragic fate. It’s no secret that the Volturi are obsessed with Bella, so much so that they pursued her across international boundaries. The fact that they thought she was a threat to their tribe is proof of how much they want her for themselves. Fortunately, Carlisle and the rest of the Cullen family were able to protect her from their clutches. Even more fortunate for her is that she found Edward, who ultimately ended up being the only person who could make the Volturi relent and leave her alone. She’ll always have that special connection with him, which isn’t something that the vicious Volturi could take away.

It’s clear that Bella and Edward’s time apart was challenging for them both. Living in different parts of the world meant that they had to adjust to new environments, new friends, and, of course, new romances. Inevitably, Edward’s other romantic interests caused trouble for Bella. She struggled with jealousy and uncertainty over who Edward would ultimately choose. As far as Jacob is concerned, Bella doesn’t have to worry about him. It’s clear that he’s not interested in dating or even beingfriends with her. He sees her as a potential ally for the Cullen family and, later on, as a wife to fight for his rights as an Alpha vampire. For now, she’s just his friend.

Twilight and ‘Breaking Dawn’

There’s no question that the first part of the final installment, ‘Twilight’, is an absolutely superb piece of cinema. To this day, it still stands as one of the greatest opening sequences of all time. Even more impressive is that it was accomplished without the help of visual effects. The entire sequence is designed entirely around acting and camera work, which is why it still feels so real even though it was almost ten years ago when we first witnessed it.

‘Twilight’ is a prequel to ‘Breaking Dawn’, so it makes sense that the opening would be adapted from the latter’s finale. Wherever possible, Summit chose to keep the same scene structure from ‘Twilight’ and used similar sets and costumes for the final battle. This was especially the case with Bella’s bedroom, which is the same room that she slept in for three years. In ‘Twilight’, we were told that Bella had just turned seventeen when this movie takes place. As a result of her age, it’s no surprise that she doesn’t want to leave her room. The only difference is that she’s finally coming into her own as a vampire and isn’t as afraid of becoming too independent. This is clear from her interactions with the otherworldly Volturi, who are portrayed here as sexual predators rather than a peaceful coexistence.

While Bella is adjusting to her new species, Edward is struggling with his own inner conflict. Now that his family has been restored, he knows that he has to choose between them and the newly formed Volturi. In the end, it’s Carlisle’s wise advice that convinces Edward to make the right choice and to protect his family at all costs. This, in turn, leads to one of the most emotional scenes in the entire series. The battle that ensues is also incredibly dramatic and showcases the incredible power of the vampires.

While viewers were initially disappointed with the ending of ‘Twilight’, it’s important to remember that it was a completely unique perspective that the filmmakers were taking. In the grand scheme of things, this is still one of the most positive moments in the entire saga. For the first time, we’re seeing an optimistic ending to a vampire story. Maybe, just maybe, these blood-sucking monsters aren’t all that bad after all.
