Who would have thought that little ol’ Rob would have risen to such heights? The British actor has been on our TV screens since 2010 playing the part of Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, and since then he’s gone on to become one of the most bankable movie stars of our time. Sure, his most famous role might be that of Scott Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he’s been in a slew of hit films since then including the box-office smashes The Batman and Black Swan, among others. It seems like every other movie these days has a Robert Pattinson cameo as an actor, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen him on the big screen. That’s all going to change this year as he plays the lead role in the new James Bond movie. SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, and Revenge) debuts this month, and while some might say it’s just a cameo (Pattinson’s character is killed off screen at the end of the movie), it’s clear that the British actor is putting in a serious bid for an Oscar.
So, it’s been a while since we’ve seen Robert in a movie, but we’ve definitely been keeping up with his career on the big screen. He’s been nominated for several awards over the years, but has only won one so far. What accolades has he won for? Let’s find out.
The BAFTAs
One of the most prestigious film awards in the world is The British Film Awards, otherwise known as the BAFTAs. The awards are handed out annually and recognize the best in British filmmaking. Every year, the BAFTAs honor a select few films with the coveted Best Film award. The 2020 edition will be on February 18 and you can begin to vote for your favorite movie here. As we mentioned above, Robert has won one of these prestigious awards already in his career, back in 2014 for his performance in The Past. Here’s a little closer look at that award and how he managed to snag it.
As a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, it’s no surprise that Robert has picked up multiple BAFTA awards throughout his career. In addition to his award for Best Film, he has also taken home the award for Best Actor for his role as Bill Sikes in the 2006 Black Swan, and he won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Tommy Shelby in the 2011 crime comedy-drama Only God Forgives. That last one might seem a little odd as it was essentially a comedic role, but he somehow carried the entire movie with his portrayal of Shelby.
The Academy Awards
While we’re on the subject of awards, let’s not forget about The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. These are the awards given out annually by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize the best in film throughout the year. As you might imagine, Robert has been nominated for a pair of Oscars already in his career, back in 2014 for his role as Hamlet in the movie adaptation of the William Shakespearean tragedy and in 2017 for his portrayal of Lenny in the Coen brothers’ film The Handmaiden. While he didn’t score a win with either of these Academy Award nominations, they’re still in his corner.
What’s interesting about Robert’s 2019 Academy Award nomination is that it was for a supporting role in the Netflix original movie To Rome With Love. The movie was based on the novel, The Jewelers’ Shop, by Eric Clapton (yes, that Eric Clapton), and it follows an English lord who travels to Italy in order to marry an Italo-British Princess. While To Rome With Love wasn’t particularly well-received by most critics, it still performed well at the box office, and it’s led to a number of lucrative opportunities for Robert. The Oscars are coming up, and it’s time to start thinking about whom you want to see winning that Oscar.
The Golden Globes
Speaking of The Golden Globes, those are another set of prestigious awards given out annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Just like the Oscars, the Globes are dedicated to honoring the best in film and television. While The Golden Globes don’t typically hand out a Best Actor award, they have awarded Robert the prestigious Sidney Poitier Award on multiple occasions. In addition to winning the first two Sidney Poitier Awards for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (The Past and The Wolf of Wall Street, respectively), he has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role as Bill Sikes in the 2006 Black Swan. Since then, he has gone on to win a Golden Globe for Performance in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his work in The Man Who Loved Crocs (2018).
One of the more interesting aspects of Robert’s performance in The Man Who Loved Crocs is that it was the actor’s first foray into portraying a character with an intellectual disability. He took on the role of Dr. Daniel Pierce, an esteemed Harvard scholar who befriends a charming, but intellectually disabled man named Charlie (played by John Malkovich). While it’s clear that Robert admires the work that organizations like RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) and the Hockley Institute for Gender Relations at the University of Oklahoma are doing, it’s still interesting to see him tackle such a challenging role. This is a man whose career, up until this point, has been dedicated to portraying compelling characters with ease. Perhaps going forward, we’ll see more roles like this? It wouldn’t be the first time that The Golden Globes recognized an actor’s extraordinary achievement in portraying a character with an intellectual disability. In fact, it happened in 2017 when Mahershala Ali won the Oscar for his portrayal of a disabled man named Dion in the movie Moonlight. This was a role that Ali, who is also known for playing the character Charlie in the TV series, House of Cards, had to audition for after Viola Davis turned the part down. What a journey this has been for Ali, who was working as a dishwasher at the time he got the call for Moonlight, and who went on to become one of the most in-demand actors of our time. Even before he went on to win an Oscar for his role as Dion, Robert had already been nominated for a Golden Globe for playing a similar character in 2005 for his performance in Beautiful Thing.
The Independent Spirit Awards
The Independent Spirit Awards are given out annually to honor the best in film and television, and they’re one of the more idiosyncratic awards ceremonies. For example, they give out a “Special Merit Award” every year, usually to a person who has made a major impact on LGBT+ cinema but isn’t necessarily a part of the Hollywood system. The last time that this award was given out was in 2019 to Mila Kunis for playing Mary Jane Watson in the Spiderman movie. While we’re sad to see this award go to someone other than Robert, it’s still an honor to be nominated for a role that advocates for LGBT+ rights. This year’s Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out on February 18 and you can begin to vote for your favorite film and television here.
We could keep going, but hopefully, this article gave you enough information to know who Robert Pattinson is and what awards he has won.
