The teaser trailer for The Batman has been out for a while now, but it has only been the past couple of days that people have been able to see it in its entirety. The clip shows Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with a voice-over provided by Michael Caine, and a gritty look at the Caped Crusader’s world. It also features cameos by several other celebrities, as well as excerpts from director Matt Reeves’ new film, Cloverfield Paradox, which is part of the same cinematic universe as The Batman.

A Legendary Performance

The video itself is just over two minutes long, but it feels like a whole lot more. The Batman is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and for good reason. Not only is it the culmination of a decade of rumors and expectations, it is also being directed by Matt Reeves, the longtime cinematographer on The Batman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and co-writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves said that he sees Bruce Wayne as a “symbol of truth, justice, and democracy,” and that his character is a “force for good in the world. He’s a symbol for that kind of idealism.”

While Robert Pattinson has been steadily gaining recognition for his brilliant portrayal of the titular character, the majority of the praise has been going to Gary Oldman for his transformative work as the villainous Commissioner Barbara Gordon. The Hollywood Reporter notes that when Reeves first met with Oldman, he “knew right away that the actor was the one he had to have for the role of the Joker.” However, it was clear that Oldman was not finished with his transformation, and that he needed more time to perfect the character. The result is a performance that is both terrifying and hilarious, and has reportedly won over audiences around the world.

A Look At A Decade Of Rumors

The Batman has been in the making for almost a decade, with the first movie being introduced in 1989. There have been numerous casting announcements and promotional videos over the years, with many believing that the role of Bruce Wayne would eventually be played by another actor.

Thanks to a string of rumors that were started back in 2011, most notably when Mark Wahlberg was reported to be in the running for the role of Bruce Wayne, it was eventually revealed that the actor was in fact playing the part of the Joker. The rumor was spread in an effort to distract the public from the original intent of the rumor, which was to name John Hamm as the new Batman.

Whether or not there is any truth to the rumor that Mark Wahlberg was originally cast in the role of Batman, it is clear that the part was written with him in mind. As Reeves explained:

“There’s no question that John Hamm’s performance as the Joker inspired me to write the role of Bruce to a much greater extent than it had ever been written for before,” Reeves said. “In terms of creating a character that is a true successor to the Joker, I would have to say Mark Wahlberg is as close as we’re going to get.”

The role of the Joker was subsequently played by two other actors, with Mark Wahlberg’s Heath Ledger winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the character. However, the most acclaimed performance comes from Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the sociopathic Joker in 2021’s Joker.

With the exception of a brief appearance in 1992’s Nightman, it has been reported that Robert Pattinson has been playing the role of Bruce Wayne for the entirety of its decade-long development cycle. After all, he has the perfect Ivy League build for the part, and his acting skills, coupled with his aristocratic looks, make him an ideal choice to play the wealthy playboy turned vigilante.

A Brimming With Starscraper

Apart from Robert Pattinson, The Batman also stars several other A-list celebrities, including Ben Affleck, who plays the role of Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting protege, Dick Grayson (aka Nightwing); Zoe Kravitz, his love interest; and more recently, Chinese actress and singer Chen Li. Additionally, the cast also includes Batman villains, the Riddler and the Penguin, alongside cameo appearances from Alfred Pennyworth (played by Michael Caine) and Commissioner Gordon (played by Charlize Theron).

The trailer for The Batman has already racked up over 22 million views on YouTube as of this writing, and with good reason. Not only does it feature a perfect cast, packed with stars, it is also the culmination of a decade of rumors and speculation.
