Victoria is one of the most famous faces in the world and has graced the covers of many a magazine. She’s had a long and illustrious career as a model, and even appeared in a Victoria’s Secret commercial. She’s graced the covers of Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan, and Elle. She’s also appeared in campaigns for Lanvin, Hermes, BVLGARI, and Ralph Lauren. She’ll soon be seen in the upcoming Spring/Summer 2021 Victoria’s Secret catalog.
A Renaissance Woman
As a woman, Victoria is a trailblazer-she broke numerous barriers in a male-dominated industry. She’s been quoted as saying, “I like to think of myself as a Renaissance woman-I’ve inherited a lot of talents from many different areas of expertise, and I use them all every day.” And that’s exactly what she does-she uses her beauty and talents to navigate the complex world of business and fashion, and has become a role model to many women (and some men too!).
The First Nude Photo Ever
Victoria is best known for breaking the ‘nude’ photo taboo, which was originally created to shield women from the judgmental eyes of men. Back in 1906, photographer Frank Wills took nude photos of the socialite Mabel Normand. After Normand’s death in 1910, Wills refused to sell the explicit pictures, and so began the ‘nude photo’ era.
In 1916, photographer Alice Austen began to experiment with ‘nude’ photos, but she mostly covered her body with a blanket. It wasn’t until the 1920s that women began donning less clothing as the decade progressed-the stigma of the nude photo was slowly diminishing. The ‘body positive’ movement of the ‘70s helped further break down old perceptions regarding the female form. And in the ‘80s, designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Miu Miu began to use non-traditional, more revealing clothing, which further broke with convention.
A Fashion Icon
Even in her youth, Victoria had a unique and distinctive style that set her apart from other models. When asked about her style, she’s often quoted as saying, “I refuse to fit into your typical models’ box.” In an interview with Vogue, she said, “My approach to fashion has never been about conforming-I like to challenge people’s perceptions of beauty and fashion, and I think that’s what makes me so exciting to work with.”
Since being discovered by a modeling scout at the age of 14 and quickly rising through the ranks, Victoria has become one of the most iconic faces in modeling and fashion. While she has her critics (mostly men), many famous faces agree that Victoria is the epitome of beauty and style.
She currently resides in Paris, but travels the world for work. She’s represented the U.S. at the Paris Fashion Week and has walked the runway for Victoria’s Secret. She’s also inspired numerous commercial trends including the ‘boudoir’ coquette look, and is often credited with making bridal gowns more stylish. She’s been known to wear some pretty outrageous dresses while on the job-such as a red dress with white polka dots worn during the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
