Award-winning makeup artist Vicky Pattinson talks about her techniques, products she uses and some of her favourite looks.

The Evolution Of A Makeup Artist

Vicky Pattinson has been creating stunning makeup looks for high-profile individuals for almost two decades and has worked on famous faces like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Beyoncé. She now focuses on creating looks for individuals who love a vibrant colour pallete and unique textures.

With beauty and fashion becoming increasingly intertwined, it’s only natural that the line between make up artist and fashion model is blurred. While many mix up the careers, Vicky Pattinson sees it as a compliment. “I love that people see me as a beauty ambassador,” she says. “It’s great when people recognise you as an artist and not necessarily a model. I like that my work inspires other people. It means I’ve done my job.”

From Skin Cleansing Routine To Full-On Skin Rejuvenation

One of the biggest changes to Vicky Pattinson’s routine over the years is how she has evolved her skincare. When she first began her career, she would only use moisturiser and sunscreen and would go bare-faced for the most part. This evolved into using more products. However, there are some products that she still relies on from that time and continues to use. These are the CITRIZE AHA Serum Face Cream and the HydraFacial Waterless Hydra Mask.

The CITRIZE AHA Serum Face Cream is a treatment that essentially retextures the skin. It does this by combining peptides, AHA (pronounced “Ah-ha”), and caffeine.

AHA is a naturally occurring substance within our bodies that encourages skin cell reproduction and regeneration. When exposed to the elements (ultraviolet radiation and oxygen), the substance turns into vitamin C which encourages collagen synthesis.

In addition to encouraging collagen synthesis, the AHA in the CITRIZE AHA Serum Face Cream helps regulate the production of oil by blocking some of the enzyme messages that oil glands send to the brain. This not only results in fewer breakouts but also less shine.

Products Vicky Pattinson Reaches For

The ever-popular Rimmel products, especially the Stay All Day Liquid Foundation, are a must for Vicky Pattinson. “I love the way it makes my skin feel,” she says. “It’s a very light texture that almost feels like an illuminator. It’s difficult to describe, but I know many people love it.”

She also relies heavily on NARS products. “I love their products. They create a perfect luminous veil,” she says. “I am very much into the duochrome effect with NARS. They have such a wide range of products that allow you to experiment. Some of their products are more suitable for men than for women, but I use them all and haven’t noticed any difference.”

How Does She Do Her Makeup?

Vicky Pattinson will often walk you through her routine step-by-step if you’re curious about how she creates her looks. She uses a combination of techniques, including drawing and using different textures, to achieve her stunning makeup looks. Let’s take a look.

Skin Cleansing Routine

As the name implies, the cleanser plays an important role in the skin care equation. “I always use a good facial cleanser before applying makeup,” says Vicky Pattinson. “It helps remove dead skin cells and grime from the surface of the skin. It also prepares the face for makeup application by removing excess oils and dead skin cells.”

She continues: “After I cleanse my skin, I follow up with a moisturiser to lock in all the moisture. After applying moisturiser, I go in with an SPF 50+, at least. Then, I apply a BB cream, followed by a powder blusher. This evens out my complexion and camouflages any imperfections. Finally, I apply a lipstick to define my lips and enhance their appearance.”

Step-by-Step Tutorial: How To Apply Makeup Like Vicky Pattinson

Not into trying something new and shiny all the time? Try out Vicky Pattinson’s step-by-step tutorial to see how you can apply makeup like her. You’ll learn how to do her makeup look in nine steps.

The first step is to take out your makeup products and put them on a makeup counter or on a coffee table. It’s helpful to have a little tray or a palette to keep your products organized. Remember: the more products you have, the more you can experiment. Step two is to cleanse your face with an oil-free cleansing product and to apply a moisturiser.

After you cleanse your face, step three is to apply the concealer that suits your skin color. Step four is to tap lightly on a makeup brush to blend the concealer into your skin. Step five is to apply the lip balm that you prefer, whether it’s a balm with SPF 50+ or SPF 75 protection.

Step six is to apply the BB Cream according to your skin’s needs. If you have oily skin or if you’re prone to acne, you might want to avoid using an BB Cream because, let’s face it, they usually don’t work too well for oily skin. However, if you have dry skin or if you want to even out your complexion, you might want to try out an BB Cream.

After you’ve applied your sunblock and moisturiser, step seven is to apply an SPF 50+, at least, to protect your skin against the sun’s harsh rays. Step eight is to apply the face powder, which acts as a great base for your makeup. Step nine is to finish off the look with a lip gloss or balm. And you’re done!

Products That Help Her Stay Bright

Like many other artists, Vicky Pattinson uses colour to define her job. She likes to keep her complexion fresh and glowing and will often use products that help her do that. These are the sorts of products that you’ll find her reaching for time and time again.

HydraFacial Waterless Hydra Mask

If you’re curious about trying out the HydraFacial treatment, which can help reduce the signs of aging, you’ll find Vicky Pattinson using it. “I always use the HydraFacial mask after I cleanse my skin,” she says. “It’s great for lifting the years of damage caused by pollution and sun exposure. I feel like it gives my skin a new lease of life.”

The HydraFacial treatment is a hybrid between a facial and a body brush. It’s designed to work in conjunction with a serum and a mud pack to slough off dead skin cells. This helps reduce the visibility of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging. While there is no denying that the HydraFacial treatment is an expensive spa treatment that some would say is overrated, it is still a product that many beauty-loving women have tried and continue to recommend.
