A few weeks back, we told you all about how Jay Leno was planning to retire from the late-night news/comedy circuit. Well, it turns out that the comedian has a replacement—in the shape of Robert Pattinson. According to TheWrap, the actor will make his debut on The Tonight Show on September 14th. But before you start dreaming about meeting the Twilight star in person, let’s take a look at how you can see him on TV.
The Tonight Show
If you’re not familiar, The Tonight Show is the flagship late night talk show of NBC. It was created by Steve Coogan and is one of the most popular programs in TV history. Each week, the show airs live from New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theater. While most late night talk shows play it safe by relying on reruns or taped stand-up routines, The Tonight Show goes all-out each week by airing live comedy specials, musical performances, guests and more.
The biggest news regarding the show, aside from it being over 30 years old, is that it’s been moved to a later timeslot. It used to air at 11:35 p.m., but now it airs at 10:35 p.m. On a night with less competition, this could mean big things for The Tonight Show.
Late-Night Clash
If you’re a fan of The Tonight Show, you’ll also be familiar with its late-night companion show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Created by Jimmy Fallon, the show features the comedian as both host and interviewer, covering all sorts of topics from politics and pop culture to sports and music. For example, Fallon interviewed Barack Obama for the first time during the 2008 presidential election campaign. Since then, he has interviewed the President several more times. More importantly, these interviews were not part of a re-run —they were all live events.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon debuted in September of 2009 and airs at 12:37 a.m. on NBC. In other words, it airs right after The Tonight Show, but before The Voice.
Keeping Tabs On K-Pop
You may be wondering how you can keep up with all of the latest news regarding K-pop. What is K-pop, you may ask? It’s short for Korean popular music, and refers to the massive popular culture trend that originated in South Korea in the late 1990s. It mainly consists of Korean language songs that are often sung by, surrounded or used as background music for films and television shows.
If you’re not familiar, there is a specific style of Korean popular music called 소리카 (Soriya). It’s often described as a combination of old and new sounds, drawing influences from Western pop and traditional Korean music. In other words, it’s kind of like dubstep meets David Lynch.
You’ll often hear this style of music being played at nightclubs and bars throughout South Korea. It usually has a driving beat and is usually accompanied by a live band or synth-pop backing music.
One of the best-known artists that embodies the spirit of the 소리카 movement (or “soriyo”) is BTS, a K-pop group formed in Seoul in 2010. Since then, the seven-piece band has gone on to become one of the world’s top-selling music acts, with over 25 million albums sold globally.
If you’re interested in keeping up with all of this, there are two ways to go about it. The first is to use a specialized tool called a K-pop blog. These are blogs that are written specifically about K-pop and its various subgenres. They often contain news, interviews, album reviews and more. Check out this BTS blog if you’d like to stay up-to-date on all things K-pop.
The second way is to become a member of a Facebook group called K-Pop Addicts. The group was founded by a user named Amy Lee, who wanted to create a place for K-pop fans to come together. Now, the group has over 24,000 members, all of whom are dedicated to keeping up with the latest news, gossip and fashion trends regarding the Korean pop scene.
What if you’re not really a fan of K-pop? That’s okay, there are various other Asian music scenes that you could get into. For example, there’s a whole world of Japanese pop out there that you could get into. There are also numerous Indie-pop and New-wave bands that you could become a fan of. Plus, you can always listen to legendary old-school bands if you want to—they’re still going strong despite not being signed to a major label.
