In 2019, he announced the creation of the ELUDE Foundation, which aims to empower young people through sport.
The King
Now it’s time to meet the man behind the fame. The King is the story of a man who – after an arranged marriage to a wealthy woman – embraces a life of decadence that shocks his countrymen. It’s filled with outrageous parties and elaborate dresses, and it serves as a warning about the dangers of royalty. The film was directed by David Leitch and stars Robert Pattinson as King George, along with Charlie Hunnam, Olivia Colman, and Tom Hardy. The movie is set to be released in theaters on September 12. In the meantime, you can learn more about the film by reading our in-depth review.
Glorious
One of the most acclaimed films of 2019 is Glorious, a movie that reimagines the French Revolution as a romance. It’s based on the historical novel of the same name by Alice Neff and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Marie Antoinette. The movie was written and directed by Michael Howard. In it, the queen orders the deaths of hundreds of people in the name of fiscal responsibility. The film received rave reviews, and many hailed it as one of the most romantic films of all time. It was nominated for Best Actor (Tom Hardy) and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2020 Academy Awards. In the months leading up to the Oscars, Glorious debuted at number one in the box office, proving once again that good things come in twos.
The Last Kingdom
The Last Kingdom is one of the most ambitious movies of all time. It’s the historical drama that brings to life the twilight years of the last king of England, Alfred the Great. The movie was released in theaters across the country on August 25, and it was met with rave reviews. In particular, critics praised the performance of its lead star, Kenneth Branagh. Branagh is probably best known for his Shakespearean roles but he stole the show as the aging king. The Last Kingdom is the culmination of Branagh’s cinematic career, which he began in the 1970s. It will forever be remembered as one of the greatest movies of all time. Watch our review to learn more about this ambitious movie.
White King
Speaking of great performances, we can’t leave out of the list the white king in Gucci Gucci. The movie is a romantic comedy released in theaters across the country last month. It was directed by and stars Woody Allen, and it’s easily one of his most recent films. Allen plays the role of a very wealthy European prince who travels to California in the 1800s to seek his fortune. He quickly becomes enamored of a white woman named Jessie and they marry. But it isn’t long before he has grown tired of her constant nagging and demands for more money. He turns to drinking and the white mania that was sweeping California in the 1800s for relief. With its risqué humor and Allen’s iconic wit, White King is a must-see for fans of the director. It’s also the perfect film to remind you of why Allen is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
Darkest Hour
Speaking of Woody Allen, let’s not forget about his extraordinary directorial debut, Darkest Hour. It’s a political thriller that explores the dark underbelly of the romance between Winston Churchill and British Prime Minister – and the Duchess of Windsor – Mrs. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The film stars Oscar Isaacs, Jessica Chastain, and Natalie Dormer. Darkest Hour is the first in a trilogy that will explore the early years of Churchill’s political career. In it, he rises to the position of First Lord of the Admiralty and becomes prime minister in the middle of World War II. It’s a remarkable accomplishment at such a young age, and one that would go on to define Churchill’s political legacy. Like many of Allen’s films, Darkest Hour is filled with memorable cameos. In this case, we can’t forget about Lord Beaverbrook, who not only appears but also steals the show.
Tyrant
Even diehard fans of Woody Allen may be surprised to learn that he hasn’t directed a movie since 2011’s Midnight in Paris. But it’s not like he hasn’t been busy. He’s consistently starred in and produced movies, with his latest project, Tyrant, being the exception. Starring Julianne Moore and Alessandro Nivola, Tyrant is a biopic about the life of author and playwright William Shakespeare. The script was written by Tony and Joe Hall, who also serve as the film’s producers. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an official Woody Allen movie, but it looks like it was well worth the wait. With its blend of humor and drama, Tyrant could very well be Allen’s best film since 2008’s Vicky Christina Barcelona.
Midsommar
Speaking of Woody Allen, let’s not forget about his unique brand of dark humor. In the upcoming Netflix Original Movie Midsommar, he plays a supporting role as Karl Arndt, a wealthy entrepreneur who creates the perfect Christmas village for the suburban masses. After the unexpected death of his wife, he retires to his family estate, where he plans to immerse himself in merriment. Unfortunately, things go horribly wrong when he accidentally invites his neighbors, the Gypsy and Wolf clans, to his house for a festival that celebrates their nomadic lifestyle. The movie stars Jessica Chastain, Christopher Miller, and Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Peter Brooks. Midsommar is set for release on June 12, and we’re certain that Woody Allen fans will not be disappointed.
Knives Out
