Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were married on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 in a romantic, fair isle-themed ceremony at a luxury Scottish estate. The Twilight stars were joined by their families and friends as well as the bride’s billionaire parents.
The happy couple chose to hold their wedding on a private Boeing 727 owned by Stewart’s family. The newlywed couple spent their wedding night on the plane, flying over the Scottish countryside and taking in the spectacular views.
The following day, the newlyweds jetted off to Bali for a honeymoon with a round-the-world trip planned as part of the surprise marriage proposal. Although their dream honeymoon was tragically cut short when their plane crashed into a mountain in Peru while on its way to Sydney, Australia. Only the pilot and co-pilot survived the fiery crash, which killed all 16 people, including the couple.
The Newlywed Couple’s Historic Past
It’s easy to forget that not so long ago, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were an item. At one point, they even lived together as man and wife before converting to secularism and getting a divorce. In fact, it was their highly publicized 2005 breakup which inspired the creation of #TBT—Throwback Thursday—the unofficial Twitter hashtag used to reproach people for living in the past.
Pattinson and Stewart both dated other people before they met in 2003, and while their first encounter was reportedly an accident, their first date was no mistake. “The next day, I woke up and he was there. He’d bought me breakfast and we’d gone for a walk. It was just coffee and croissants really,” Stewart said of their courtship. “We kind of just walked and talked all day. I didn’t want it to end.”
Pattinson and Stewart fell deeply in love, and after two years of dating, the England-born actor proposed to the Scottish actress in Morocco. The couple were wed in a lavish ceremony attended by 300 guests in 2016. They honeymooned in Italy and then returned to Los Angeles to work on their first film together, the comedy Murder On the Orient Express.
The Twilight Saga: The Untold Story
After their wedding in Scotland, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart jetted off to Los Angeles for the premiere of the first in their Twilight film series, Twilight. The couple were joined by their families and friends as well as the Scottish and Welsh prime ministers at the premiere of Twilight in Los Angeles on Nov. 18, 2016.
Twilight is the story of a vampire, Bella (Stewart), who falls in love with a human, Edward (Pattinson), causing the entire human population of Forks, Washington, to become blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Though the film came out eight years ago, it is still one of the most popular movies of all time with a worldwide box office total of over $1.8 billion. It is also the highest-grossing film of all time made entirely in New Moon country, with the second installment, New Moon, grossing $408 million worldwide.
Saving La Belle Rue
Even in the wake of such incredible success, the Twilight stars have not gone gentle into that good night. Since the premiere of their first film, Pattinson and Stewart have continued to work as a team, with the actor producing, directing, and co-writing all of Stewart’s films. In addition to Twilight, Pattinson and Stewart’s directorial credits include Cloud Nine, the drama Cheating, and the comedy Sex Education.
Along with the success of their films, Pattinson and Stewart have been busy working on their personal lives. The couple were both appointed brand ambassadors for the National Youth Mental Health Foundation in 2018, in part due to the popularity of their #TBT hashtag, which saw them regularly interacting with fans on social media. Stewart frequently shares her experiences as a cancer patient on her Instagram account, while Pattinson has been seen supporting the Women’s March as well as advocating for LGBT rights.
The couple have recently worked together on a short film called Love Is Blind, a sweet romantic comedy which they both starred in. In the film, they play an interracial couple who meet on a blind date and fall in love. The story explores the funny, awkward, and charming ways in which love conquers all—even prejudice—through a series of wonderfully timed comedic scenes. Love Is Blind was written and directed by Stewart, and though it was only meant to be seen on TikTok, it has already accumulated over 1.8 million views on the platform. The video’s ending perfectly encapsulates its empowering message: “Love isn’t like what you see on screen. It’s beyond perception. Love isn’t about what you see in the mirror; it’s about what you see through eyes that love you.”
Even as they continue to find new and creative ways to connect with their fans, there is no question that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will always be linked together—thanks to their incredible story, their monumental Twilight success, and their tireless work on behalf of mental health foundations and social causes.
