The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the second part of the 2018 Spider-Man movie series and the 21st film in the overall series. This review will cover all the major details of the film along with a spoiler-free plot summary and overall thoughts on the movie.
What Is Amazing Spider-Man 2 About?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 picks up right where the first film ended with Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) returning home from his stint as the city’s protector. Parker is now back at school and about to begin his senior year at Midtown High. The only difference is now that he’s a senior, he’s a little more mature and a lot more responsible.
Like the first film, this one focuses heavily on Parker’s romantic struggles and the villains he faces this year. However, the main plot of the film involves the Inherited Energy Project, a scientific breakthrough that could help millions of people. When this project is sabotaged, the stakes are raised and Spider-Man is forced to fight an evil corporation along with some familiar faces from his high school years.
Why Is It Important?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an important movie because it serves as the conclusion to not just one, but two popular comic book film franchises. It also marks the first appearance of Peter Parker’s high school classmates in over a decade, which fans have been waiting to see on the big screen. The film is already drawing comparisons to the comics due to its darker storyline and unique aesthetic, which was a complete departure from usual superhero movies at the time.
While the first film focused on the origin story of Spider-Man, this one delves into his dark past with tragic consequences. It’s a more mature take on the character, which has already resulted in multiple critical and commercial successes. If you’re a fan of Spider-Man, then this is definitely the movie for you.
How Is The Movie A Masterclass In Storytelling?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a masterclass in storytelling thanks to its distinct structure and unique selection of characters. It opens with a lengthy prologue that delves into Peter Parker’s tragic life and how he became Spider-Man. The bulk of the film then follows a chronological tale of Spider-Man’s adventures while protecting the city and battling various foes.
What makes this approach so unique is that it allows the viewer to experience both the epic and dramatic elements of the character’s backstory and the frenetic action of his colorful escapades all in one. The structure also means that the viewer is never confused about what is happening because the events fall into place logically, which in turn makes the overall story more satisfying to watch. This style has been replicated successfully multiple times since, most notably in Dark Knight Trilogy and The Dark Knight.
Favorite Character And/Or Villain?
This is definitely a tough question; I absolutely love them all. However, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be either Kraven or the Rhino. Kraven is such an underwhelming villain compared to the others because although he’s an interesting character in his own right, he doesn’t play a huge role in the story. The Rhino, on the other hand, is such a badass and there are various ways to interpret his motivations which makes him one of the most interesting and complex antagonists ever. Who won’t hunt down the puny humans after what they did to his partner?
That being said, I also love the Lizard. He’s such a despicable character and it’s interesting to see how he gets his powers and why he turns into a lizard man. Plus, I feel like the design for the Lizard is one of the most impressive and realistic transformations in cinema history. Not to mention the fact that his voice is also digitally manipulated to sound like Frank Sinatra – so good!
Spider-Man also has the ability to turn into a perfect replica of any person he wishes to imitate, which has led to some amazing plot twists in the comics. Unfortunately, the films have been pretty one-sided when it comes to this concept, with the exception of a few episodes here and there. If there’s an actor you’d like to see play a character that fits this mold, then let’s hear it.
Most Memorable Scene?
Without a doubt, it was the subway scene. It starts with a stunning shot of New York City as Peter Parker arrives at the train station. As he walks towards the platform, the camera slowly tracks with him, filling the frame with bustling commuters. As he pauses to take a break from his journey, a bunch of thugs with baseball bats storm the train station, headed by the terrifying Kingpin. All hell breaks loose as punches and carnage ensue. It’s absolutely riveting to watch; you’ll forget everything else in the scene’s stunning beauty.
After the chaos settles down, a bloody Spider-Man crawls out of the subway tunnel, dazed and confused. He looks around for a moment and then collapses to the ground, where he finally rests for the first time since his ordeal began. It’s a truly a memorable and heartbreaking moment that will stay with you for a long time.
As a lover of the Spider-Man franchise and a diehard comic book fan, I can’t say enough good things about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Not only does it successfully conclude two of the most popular film franchises based on a beloved character, but it also introduces a whole new world of storytelling possibilities which will no doubt inspire future filmmakers.
It’s been three decades since the debut of Spider-Man and ever since then, the character has only gotten more popular and influential. While the films have gotten a little stale since the start, this is a perfect opportunity to return to the character’s roots and give him a new lease on life. Whether you’re a seasoned comic book fan or just getting into the habit of watching films based on literature, I highly recommend checking out The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
