Stephen Pattinson’s architectural work has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Architectural Digest, and his work has been profiled in publications such as the Architectural Record and Metropolis. He is a registered architect in New York and New Jersey, with offices in both states. He is the principal of SP Architecture Studio, which has offices in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Pattinson was born in England and raised in Scotland, where he attended the Glasgow School of Art. After moving to America, he apprenticed under Walter Gropius, the cofounder of the influential design school known as the Bauhaus. He has also worked with Minoru Yamasaki on many of his projects.

The Dockside Hotel And Residences

One of Pattinson’s most recent projects is The Dockside Hotel and Residences in Jersey City, New Jersey. The 200-room hotel features 27 loft-like residences spread across five stories. It is adjacent to the Jersey City waterfront and has direct access to New York’s Hudson River via the Jersey City-Hudson Line. The building is an example of a New Urbanism project, with an emphasis on using sustainable materials and methods of construction. It was inspired by the warehouses that lined the city’s waterfront in the early 20th century.

The Dockside brings a fresh take to the New Urbanism, where large residential buildings and green space are set back from a bustling street. The hotel’s design is an updated take on Art Deco, with influences from the work of Mies van der Rohe and Gordon Bunshaft. The residences feature polished concrete floors, open-plan living spaces, and large bedrooms with walk-in closets. There are also nine foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling sliding panels that can be closed off to form a private outdoor space, and oversized windows that provide spectacular views of the waterfront.

The Ombra Residence

Another project that features a residential component is The Ombra Residence in Brooklyn, New York. It was completed by Stephen Pattinson in partnership with Ombra Group (former owners of the Montblanc estate in Newport, R.I.). The 15,000-square-foot residence is the epitome of relaxation and tranquility. It consists of four matching residential towers that provide a total of 92 rooms and 12,000 square feet of amenity spaces (including a 6,000-square-foot private garden). The residential portion of the project is made up of 13 floors, including underground parking.

The Ombra Residence provides visitors with a relaxing, rejuvenating atmosphere that is unlike any other residence in New York City. It was designed to evoke an Italian watercolor, with its pale blue shutters and arched entrances. The residence’s floor-to-ceiling windows allow for plenty of natural light, as well as views of the Manhattan skyline. It is surrounded by a 24-hour doorman and security staff, private indoor/outdoor pools, a meditation garden, concierge services, and a fully equipped fitness center.

The Skyline

Other projects that feature both residential and commercial spaces include The Skyline in New York and The Lineham Estate in Summit, New Jersey. Both of these projects are by Stephen Pattinson and his firm SP Architecture Studio. The 22-story Skyline building in New York provides a blend of residential and commercial spaces, with 210 apartments and 15,000 square feet of retail.

Pattinson designed The Skyline with a sleek, modern look that incorporates polished concrete floors, exposed brick walls, and oversized windows. Residents have direct access to the amenities of Central Park via the buildings’ private terraces. Additionally, Skyline provides visitors with a residential experience that is unlike any other building in New York City. It was inspired by the city’s modernist zoning laws and the buildings that were constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Lineham Estate project in Summit, New Jersey, features a residential tower and a pair of commercial buildings that are linked by a rooftop shared amenity space and outdoor swimming pool. The nine-story residential building contains 36 apartments and four retail spaces. The commercial buildings are composed of six floors of offices and three floors of studios and exhibition spaces for artists. The shared amenity space features a large wood-burning fireplace, a retractable wall, a pond, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Lime Kiln Studio

Another project from Stephen Pattinson is Lime Kiln Studio in Brooklyn, New York. Completed in 2017, it is a mixed-use residential and commercial complex featuring seven residential towers and a hotel. The 452-room hotel is made up of 12 floors and offers a range of luxuries, from private indoor pools to sundecks, putting greens, and BBQ grills. Its design is an interpretation of the industrial brick buildings that once lined the Brooklyn waterfront. The project is owned by New York-based CIM Group and features the architectural firm Handel Architects.

Lime Kiln Studio represents a new type of residential development in Brooklyn, with a focus on sustainability. The building’s seven residential towers are made up of floor-to-ceiling windows, polished concrete floors, and stacked stone exteriors. Each tower is wrapped in a metallic sheving and clad in ceramic tile. There are also five acres of private amenity spaces, including a pool, spa, playground, basketball court, and meditation garden. The site is a short walk from Flatbush Avenue and the B and Q trains, as well as a 1-minute walk to the Barclays Center.

Lime Kiln Studio is an example of a New Urbanism project in Brooklyn, with a concentration on building a livelier community with shops, restaurants, and bars. It has attracted a number of high-profile firms, including RSK Architecture, Shigeru Masuda Architects, and Handel Architects, as well as a team of boutique interior-design firms.

The Beekman

Still another project from Stephen Pattinson is The Beekman, which is located in the East Village of Manhattan. Built in 1909 and renovated by Pattinson in 2013, the Beekman is a 13-story Beaux-Arts building that was originally known as the Manhattan Transfer Company Building. Its interior features marble, ceramic tile, and wood flooring, and it has an Art Deco-style mural painted by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The Beekman’s design is credited to architects Carrere & Arpels, with interiors by McKim, Mead, and White. The 13 residential floors accommodate 462 bedrooms and contain a mix of studio, one, and two-bedroom apartments. Additionally, the Beekman contains a four-star restaurant, The Spinning Wheel; a three-star restaurant, Chuko Sushi; a café; and a bar. The development also features a fitness center, pool, spa, and terraced gardens.

Since its renovation in 2013, The Beekman has attracted interest from corporate buyers seeking to occupy the top floors, due to its prime location in the heart of the city. The building is a significant component of the East Village’s cultural identity, providing a glimpse into the area’s past.

Sustainability

Many of Pattinson’s projects feature an emphasis on sustainability, with features such as photovoltaics, rainwater tanks, and natural ventilation. This is in line with the architect’s vision of creating “wellbeing cities,” where residents can rely on a range of sustainable products and methods of design to create a better lifestyle.
