If you follow UK celebrity news, you’ll read a lot about Robert Pattinson. Whether he’s appearing on the red carpet or in the tabloids, the 27-year-old’s name is probably somewhere in there. For those who aren’t familiar, he is the British actor who rose to fame playing the lead character in the Twilight films. While the franchise might be over now, Pattinson is still very much in the public eye, and it’s not because of his acting skills.
The actor recently revealed some interesting tidbits about his life on social media. One of the things he’s been sharing is his daily routine. It turns out that when it comes to acting, you don’t always need to be on set to work. While filming the final installment of Twilight in 2014, Pattinson started exploring the London theater scene. As he explained in a tweet, this is when he began toying with the idea of becoming a professional actor:
Pattinson actually has a pretty cool routine. As he’s become more established in the acting world, he’s been able to balance his career with his daily life. He still makes time for friends and family, as you’ll see in the video, but he also gets to work hard at his craft. Let’s take a look:
Early Routine
Before heading into his daily routine, let’s just review what we know about Pattinson’s early life. He was born in London to a musician father and a housewife mother. He lived with his parents until he was 10, when he and his brother started living with their grandparents. His family is extremely supportive of his career, and they all attended his wedding to Sophie Cullen in 2014. This is also the same year that he began taking acting seriously, trying out for and then joining the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. So, even before he got into acting, he was already balancing a career with a family life.
Getting Ready For Work
Let’s discuss what happens after your first rehearsal, but before you head to the theater. For most actors, this is a time to decompress, getting to know your lines and learning your character’s backstory. For Pattinson, this is when he gets ready for work. He starts by going over some of his lines, ensuring that he’s not forgetting anything. Next, he heads to his makeup artist, hair and dresser, to get prepped for the scene. Once everything is done, he feels ready to hit the stage.
While most actors head to their trailers to get refreshed and relaxed before heading to set, Pattinson enjoys the creative process. He gets to work with directors and writers, and even gets to improvise parts of his lines. This is why he probably won’t ever want to sit back and wait for the next project to come along. As he told Vanity Fair, “I like being involved in the process, getting input from other people, and not being limited by other people’s opinions.” This is also probably why he doesn’t like to take vacations, as he feels disconnected from the outside world when he’s off-camera. But he still enjoys spending quality time with his family and friends, as you’ll see in the video.
On Set
Once he’s on set, it’s time to dive into the fun part of acting. While most actors head to the closest trailer to pop a smoke or drink a cup of tea, Pattinson heads to the scene. This is where he does his thing. This might be the most stressful part of the routine for him, as you can tell from the tension on his face in the video. But it’s also the part that he enjoys most, as he gets to work with creative people and see how the scene plays out. Even if it’s just a shot for a scene, he still likes to be on set to see how it all comes together. As he told Vogue, “You want to have as much input as possible during the process. Whether it’s designing a costume, learning a new song, or improvising a line, you always want to be involved in the creative process.”
On the set of the latest Twilight movie, Pattinson learned to drive a car and did stunt work. He also learned how to fight, as you might imagine, as a result of playing the lead in a superhero movie. The latter part of the video shows him practicing his moves, as it’s clear that he’s getting more and more involved in the action genre. After filming the twelfth installment of Twilight, Pattinson filmed two other projects in Spain and Iceland. Then, in July of last year, he started filming the latest Batman installment. On set, he had to learn to pilot an airplane and dive. To do these things, he had to take a training course and follow a schedule. It was the same for learning how to fight. On the video, you can even see him trying on some of the outfits that he had to design himself. This was due to the fact that the filmmakers didn’t have enough time to find the fit for a particular scene. He told The Verge, “It was pretty cool getting to design my own costumes and try new things. Sincerely, this is the part that I’m most looking forward to.” Unfortunately, despite all these perks, there are still plenty of downsides to being in the public eye. As he told Vogue, “You do lose a lot of privacy. People will always have opinions about you, whether they’re good or bad. This is part of the reason why I try and avoid being spotted as much as possible. I don’t need the paparazzi to ruin my life. They can be really invasive.”
After Set
Pattinson doesn’t just do his work in front of the camera. After filming, he has some time to relax and decompress. This is when he begins to focus on his health and fitness. He told Elle, “I hit the gym six days a week, and I do some yoga as often as possible. I also try to eat well and get plenty of sleep. If you do all these things, you’ll be able to maintain an active lifestyle, which is fun and important to keep up.” He also avoids alcohol and drug use, as it interferes with his work. But being on set isn’t all fun and games. As he explained to Buzzfeed, “There is so much more to it than just making movies. You have to develop skills, including business and legal skills, and networking skills. It’s not enough just to be able to act. You have to be able to promote yourself and your work, both on and off set. It’s a full-time job.”
Being in the public eye doesn’t come without its perks, but it’s still a lot of work. It’s not always easy, as you can see from the video. There are days when he just wants to stay in and relax, but there are also days when he has to be on set at a decent hour. It really is a case of no rest for the wicked. But as he’s found his voice and begun to enjoy what he’s doing, it’s all been worth it.
