On The Importance Of Collaboration
Seacrest: There’s a lot of great artists that you worked with on this album including Travis Scott. How does it feel to have such a prestigious artist list?
Pattinson: It feels pretty great. I guess you could say it’s a combination of a lot of hard work meeting that many talented people. It certainly wasn’t easy, but I’m very, very happy that it all came together.
Seacrest: What do you think has helped make this album so special?
Pattinson: I think the biggest difference is that this album was made on our terms. It wasn’t made by a record label, so we were able to put our own spin on things. Also, all of the musicians that we worked with were hand-picked by myself or my co-writer, Emily King. It wasn’t like we were searching high and low for a string quartet or something, which is usually the case when you have a record label trying to push an album. We wanted to make sure that we found the best available musicians and then went out and found the best possible way to work with them.
On The Album’s Title
Pattinson: The album’s title, Lost In Space, is about being lost in your thoughts. You’re reading a book and it’s all going great, until you lose track of time and space. The album itself is a voyage to the center of your mind. It’s not so much that you’re lost as it is that you realize you’ve been wandering off for some time.
On Collaborating With Travis Scott
Pattinson: Travis Scott is one of the most creative, talented, and humble guys I’ve ever met. The fact that he reached out to me and wanted to work with me was pretty flattering, considering how big of a fan he is of my music. I guess you could say that collaborating with him was a bit like playing in the band that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were putting together in 1968. You know, the Beatles.
Scott is responsible for a lot of the album’s production as well. He co-wrote half of the songs and produced the album. He put his own spin on things and I really enjoyed working with him.
Seacrest: Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment. It’s great to see such hard work pay off. When you’re starting out, how did you manage to get such high-profile music gigs?
Pattinson: I’ve been writing songs since I was a child. I would always have music in the background while I was doing other things. When I was 16, I had my first professional gig playing keyboards for a band called The Rasmus. Since then, I’ve just been performing regularly. It’s all been a bit of a blur, but I guess you could say that I’ve just been really lucky. I’ve always been in the right place at the right time and got the jobs that I’ve done because people have heard of me or my music.
Pattinson: After this album, I want to take some time off to focus on other things. I need to find a good balance between my music and my private life. I mean, I have a six-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter, so there’s a lot going on. I guess you could say that I want to make sure that I’m doing what I want to be doing and that it is something the fans want me to do. My team and I are starting to map out a sort of a lifestyle brand that spans both music and fashion, so I’ll have a lot to tell you about once the dust settles.
Once again, congratulations on such a great album. It’s an honor to have worked with such a talented person.
