While the world watched in awe as Robert Pattinson became the most-followed person on Instagram last year, his parents had another milestone to celebrate: the grand opening of their garden shop in London’s Covent Garden.
The parents, who live in a luxury apartment in London, have worked hard to put their children’s early fame and fortune to good use. Now that their son is a global superstar, they are looking to give other aspiring actors some sage advice on how to navigate the complex world of show business. While the timing might not be ideal, as 2019 has just begun, it would be remiss to not share their insight into the industry.
Take Care of Your Health
Pattinson’s health has been a major concern since his accident-prone young days. The actor suffered a life-threatening incident when he was just 24 years old and had to be hospitalized for over a month. Since then, he has been on the road to recovery and has maintained a relatively clean drug regimen.
But it wasn’t just his health that suffered after being in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. It also knocked the wind out of him and required him to start from scratch when it comes to his bodybuilding. As a result, he now weighs less than he did as a bodybuilder and has kept his former muscle tone while also adding a bit of padding to his frame.
Make Friends With Industry Professionals
Even before he became a star, Pattinson was interested in film. After seeing indie darlings like Jim Jarmusch’s 1989 cult classic, “Dead Mans Walking,” at the age of 10, he became fixated on movies and began to study acting in college. But it wasn’t until after he started making a name for himself that he really started to consider pursuing a career in film. In 2014, he told GQ:
“I would love to do a film every year. It’s just about finding the right story and the right people to tell it and the right time to do it. There are so many things that could be adapted for the big screen. We just have to find the right people to tell those stories.”
Since then, he has amassed a considerable amount of celebrity, appearing in acclaimed films like Woody Allen’s “Shadow,” alongside Antonio Banderas, and Richard Linklater’s “Last Love Story.” But it wasn’t easy jumping into the deep end of the acting pool. He said in 2018 that he felt like a “fish out of water” in Hollywood, where he often found himself struggling to connect with other actors.
“I find it hard to relate to people. I feel like if I went anywhere else other than acting, it would be so much easier,” he told the Daily Mail. “I feel like I’ve had to work so hard to build up a character, which is not something I’m naturally inclined to do.”
Pattinson is known for being a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to his personal life, but he takes his professional life seriously and is extremely organized. As a result, his schedule is hectic and often unpredictable, but he still manages to fit in some acting lessons whenever he can.
“I always have a notebook and a pen near me. When you’re on the set of a film, there’s a million things that could go wrong and you have to be prepared for anything,” he said to Vogue in 2018.
“Sometimes it can be difficult to get everything done in time, especially with all the last-minute changes that usually come with shooting. But I try to stay as organized as possible because I don’t want to waste any time once the cameras stop rolling. I want to make the most out of my time on set and not feel rushed.”
Choose Your Partners Carefully
Pattinson might be the biggest star in the world on Instagram, but he is still just an actor at the end of the day. He is not in a position to negotiate his own contracts or choose the projects that he works on. This is where his agent and manager come in. It is also where he can focus on the things that he loves most: acting and photography.
“My parents have been around for a long time and they’ve seen a lot. They’re just as proud of me now as they were when I was young. I feel like I’ve grown up with them looking over my shoulder, wanting the best for me. So now that I’m getting more mature, they want to help.”, he told the Sun in 2018.
“They’re both very grounded people, and they always tell me that I should enjoy the time that I have because life is too short to waste any time feeling sorry for yourself. If anything, I should be embracing every opportunity that comes my way.”
Pattinson’s parents have always been supportive of his career, and they are more determined than ever to see their son succeed. While it might not be easy for an actor with his profile to find work, they are working hard to make their son’s name even bigger.
