Is it really time for another member of the DCEU to become a superhero? After all, it’s been less than a year since the release of ‘Aquaman’, and the DCEU already has three members who have donned the cowl.
While it would be fair to assume that Warner Bros. was saving the best for last when it came to the Bat-movie franchise, the studio has in fact gone ahead and released ‘Detective Comics’ during the pandemic as part of their ‘More Than Meets The Eye’ series. For those who have been following the adventures of the Last Son of Batman, the timing of this release couldn’t be more perfect.
With that in mind, it’s time to ask the question: Is Robert Pattinson the next actor to don the bat-costume and ride to the rescue?
Pattinson’s Batman Is Dark And Dangerous
For those who have yet to experience it, let me assure you that ‘Detective Comics’ is a must-read. This is, undoubtedly, the best Batman comic of all time and stands alone as an incredible piece of work. It also happens to be one of the best comics of 2020, if not the best.
‘Detective Comics’ is the story of the Dark Knight, and it doesn’t hold back in any way. The first half of the book is presented from the point-of-view of Bruce Wayne as he investigates the brutal murder of a young girl. He soon discovers that several other sinister crimes have been committed, seemingly connected to the original murder. This sends him down a path of discovery that leads him to clash with some of Gotham’s most notorious criminals. These stories are thrilling, shocking and incredibly engaging.
The best part of ‘Detective Comics’ is how much it doesn’t hold back. We get to see Bruce Wayne in a way we haven’t seen him since he became Batman. Prior to the pandemic, WB hadn’t released an original Batman story in many years, choosing instead to retell or reinvent classic tales. With ‘Detective Comics’, however, we’re given the chance to see what the world would look like if Batman had never donned the cape and cowl.
What was once considered a lost chapter from Bill Finger and Bob Kane’s ‘The Dark Knight’ has been restored thanks to the talents of Dick Sprang and Bernard Beckett. The result is one of the most unique Batman depictions yet. For those who love their superheroes dark and grittier, ‘Detective Comics’ is a must-read. For those who prefer their superheroes a little more conventional, there are still plenty of surprises in store.
An Ingenious Take On The Batman Mythos
To put it simply, ‘Detective Comics’ is amazing. If you’re a fan of Batman, you need to read this book. It’s filled to the brim with incredibly innovative ideas and unique takes on established tropes. While it has its ups and downs (the first few issues are definitely weaker than the rest), it is, overall, a fantastic piece of writing. A great script and an excellent illustration team make for one powerful package.
For those who have never read a Batman comic, here’s a quick summary of what you’ll experience. This is not meant to be a complete adaptation of ‘The Dark Knight’, but rather an overview of the tropes and ideas that are carried over from the movie. If you’ve never read a Batman comic, this is the perfect place to start. It’ll give you a good idea of what to expect.
Batman is one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, and for good reason. He’s always been a fantastic character, with a rich mythology surrounding him. He’s inspired a generation of creators and has appeared in countless media outlets. To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the character, here are five reasons why Robert Pattinson should play Batman.
Reason #1: He’s An Enigma
The first and most obvious reason why Robert Pattinson should play Batman is that he’s an enigma. We don’t know much about the actor’s physical appearance aside from his chiseled features and boyish charm. We haven’t seen any footage of him physically in action, and it’s very unlikely that we ever will. This leaves us with no idea of what he looks like, and to be honest, it’s kind of appealing.
As for his personality, we are blessed with his on-screen persona. We know he’s good-natured, kind, protective and passionate. While it would be easy for him to perform a one-dimensional version of himself, Pattinson goes above and beyond, showing us a side of himself that the world has never seen before. This is one of the main reasons why he’s been so successful in his acting roles. He truly is an enigma, and it’s impossible to know what he will bring to the role.
Reason #2: He’s Versatile
Another reason why Robert Pattinson should play Batman is that he’s versatile. As we’ve established, we don’t know much about the actor’s physical appearance aside from his chiseled features and boyish charm. This leaves us with no idea of what he looks like, and to be honest, it’s kind of appealing. However, that doesn’t take away from his versatility. We know he can play intense and dramatic scenes, as well as comedic ones. This isn’t something that most actors can claim. This is probably why he’ll be appearing in both ‘Onward’ and ‘Midsommar’, two very different yet equally successful films.
Although he’s not particularly known for his work in horror films, the actor was actually born in London, Ontario, Canada, to an English mother and Scottish father. This might explain his affinity for the dark and dreary, as he grew up surrounded by heavy snowfall and dismal weather conditions. While in high school, he reportedly acted in a production of ‘Naked Boys Singing’ alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. He graduated from the University of London in 2015, the same year he graduated from drama school. It wasn’t long before he began landing lead roles in major studio films. This is partly due to his impressive versatility, but it’s also because he doesn’t fit the typical Hollywood archetype. Most likely, the latter is a better explanation.
Reason #3: Batman Is The King Of Comic Books
It would be an understatement to say that ‘The Dark Knight’ is one of the most influential comic book films of all time. Its unprecedented success in theaters has continued to inspire filmmakers and popular culture as a whole. While other superheroes seem to have taken the spotlight since the premiere of ‘The Dark Knight’, it’s still considered one of the mainstays of the genre.
‘The Dark Knight’ is such a pivotal work because it introduced a whole new audience to the concept of comic books. When the character of Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27, he was originally titled ‘The Boy Scout’. His original purpose was to inspire children to be more responsible, honest citizens. Over the years, the character has taken on a life of his own, inspiring creators and becoming a face of dissent within Hollywood. The Dark Knight is still considered the yardstick by which all other Batman films are measured, and his influence is immeasurable.
It’s no coincidence that ‘The Dark Knight’ was released during a time when comic books were experiencing a major resurgence, due mostly to the efforts of creators like Alan Moore and the later-legacy of Frank Miller. Prior to the pandemic, there hadn’t been a new Batman film released in over 10 years. While other superheroes got the short shrift, the Dark Knight still managed to pull in $1.04 billion at the box office.
Reason #4: The Film Will Be Different
Another important factor to consider is that the film will be different. As we’ve established, we don’t know much about the actor’s physical appearance aside from his chiseled features and boyish charm. This leaves us with no idea of what he looks like, and to be honest, it’s kind of appealing. What we do know is that he’ll be portraying a character who is entirely different from what we’re used to seeing. This is partly because of his background as a theater actor, but it’s also because of the nature of the script. As a result, he’ll be bringing a brand new charm to the role.
