It’s been a year since Twilight came out and though we may never know for sure, it’s fair to say that the movies haven’t stopped ringing in our ears. For those of you who haven’t yet seen it (and we bet there are many of you), here’s a recap of what happened in Twilight:
Eve (Kristen Stewart) and Bella (Taylor Lautner) are just two ordinary high school girls who meet on their way to college and become best friends. As their friendship grows, so does their relationship with the Cullens (Romeo and Juliette). When the times come for them to enter the big bad world, they are unprepared for the horrors they will face nor the sacrifice they will have to make. But they must continue on their journey to find love. Along the way, they are beset by evils that threaten their existence and the existence of those they love. And it’s all tied up in a supernatural bow.
Despite the dark undertones, Twilight was a massive success. The movie not only became the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, it also spawned numerous spin-off movies, a popular soundtrack, and even a mobile app.
Some of the credit for Twilight’s success goes to the talent of the young cast. Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner impressed us with their acting chops, and even the usually stoic Robert Pattinson gave an amazing performance. But it also goes to show how much the public loves a good vampire story.
Now that the movie is over, it’s been revealed that Stewart and Lautner aren’t actually dating. The two are just good friends who co-starred in the movie. But that’s not the only relationship revelation that came out of Twilight. Several other stars had their own secret secrets to share.
Robert Pattinson: Still As Smooth As Ice
We all know that Robert Pattinson is an amazing and talented actor who has appeared in some pretty incredible movies. But did you know that Pattinson is a really good guitar player, too? Though he has been known to jam with the Foo Fighters and John Mayer, he has also been known to sneak away from his busy schedule to play guitar for himself. And contrary to popular belief, he is not the best at hiding his emotions. In fact, he’s been known to pour his heart out in his music.
“I want to show people that there’s more than one way to express yourself,” he told Rolling Stone magazine in 2012. “There are a lot of different kinds of people in this world, and if I can shed some light on the different aspects of myself and my life, maybe it’ll make me a more endearing character to others.”
When it comes to acting, his range is astounding, so it would be a shame not to explore it further. For those of you who have yet to see any of his work, here’s your chance. We’re going to run down some of his most impressive roles and what they mean.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
It’s safe to say that Twilight was the beginning of a whole new chapter in Robert’s career. Not only did the movie introduce us to the amazing world of vampires, but it also showed us that he was more than just a pretty face. In fact, it was the acting in Twilight that really started his climb to fame. But it wouldn’t be right to talk about Robert Pattinson without mentioning the role that made him a superstar: Edward Cullen.
Edward is one of the most complex characters in all of Twilight. We learn a lot about him through Bella’s eyes, but she is also a product of her time. Edward is a pure blood vampire who is extremely selective about the females with whom he mixes. He is shown to be charming, patient, and protective of Bella, which makes him a perfect match for her. Though he may be old, Edward cares for Bella like a father would for his daughter.
When given the choice, Bella always says no to any romantic advances from strange men in order to protect her baby sister. But Edward isn’t really a stranger. He may disguise himself as a stranger, but he has known Bella and her family for years. He also shows a motherly side towards Bella, which makes him an even more endearing character to us.
Unfortunately, the Cullens are not the only creatures after Bella’s blood. Victoria (Bella Tété), the mother of the Cullens, is a powerful, pure blood vampire as well. Though she is not as old as Edward, her desire to feed on human blood makes her seem significantly older. Victoria is one of the most vile characters in Twilight, and she doesn’t hesitate to show her true colors when it comes to Bella. She believes that her granddaughters are the key to creating a vampire army, which will be used to take over the world. She wants nothing more than to sate her bloodlust and destroy Eve and her siblings, but she will never get the chance.
The Rover
Just when you think that the trailer for The Rover wouldn’t be able to fit any more plot twists, the enigmatic scriptwriter Stephen Chbosky manages to surprise you with yet another jaw-dropping turn of events. But even if you’ve seen the movie a dozen times, the twists will still feel fresh. And that’s what makes it so powerful.
The story centers around two brothers, Joe and Mike, who return home from military service in Afghanistan together. They had not seen each other in a long time, and not wanting to be the same kind of unsupportive father that they had been estranged from, they take it upon themselves to help each other get back on their feet. For the first time, they rely on each other and form a strong bond.
The thing is, this is not the usual kind of brother movie. This is an adult movie with serious themes and intense drama. It’s not for the faint of heart. But in the end, the ups and downs of life make these characters realize that even though they are different, they are still brothers and can depend on each other. And that’s what makes The Rover such a special movie.
High-Risk
Let’s be honest: we all want to live a life as exciting as that of a movie star. But let’s be realistic, we aren’t all born with perfect bodies like Jennifer Lawrence or a Hollywood smile like Taylor Lautner. There are risks involved in living the high-risk lifestyle. It’s not only about impressing people with your beach body. There is danger surrounding every corner. Take a car accident, for example. If you’re living in Los Angeles, there’s a good chance that you’ll get into a car accident at least once in your life. But what happens when you get into a car accident with a high-powered celebrity? Well, in the case of High-Risk, what happens is that your life changes forever. It’s not just a car crash, it’s a life-altering event. You could lose a limb, be in a coma, or suffer from trauma so severe that you’ll need constant nursing care. Of course, you hope that you’ll never have to experience any of this. Unfortunately, in the real world, the bad things that happen to you don’t come with a warranty.
Take Shelter
Take Shelter is about a desperate father who doesn’t want his kids to grow up in the same world he did. He doesn’t want them to experience the same heartache and hopelessness that he did. So he builds a shelter in the middle of his Pennsylvania farm. He doesn’t want them to become anything like him. So he builds a shelter.
It starts out as a routine patrol when four horsemen knock on the door. They have traveled all the way from Hell to inform the residents of the impending doom that is about to strike. But with the sheer volume of information that washes over the audience, it is difficult to have the horsemen’s voices stand out. It is more effective when they speak in unison. Though the setting is probably the most memorable aspect of this movie, the acting and directing were both extraordinary. Both the film and the novel on which it is based are considered to be masterpieces. Even those of us who haven’t read the book consider ourselves indebted to King for penning such an iconic story.
