When the “Twilight” actor Robert Pattinson and British actor Tom Holland first met in London during the 2016 film festival circuit, they could not have been more different. Pattinson is a famous face, while Holland is relatively unknown in the U.S. Now that the “Twilight” movies are over and done with, these two incredibly talented men may find themselves working together again in the near future.
The 33-year-old actor is best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” movie series, for which he accumulated a large Instagram following. He also starred in the upcoming romantic comedy “Sylvester”, and has been widely publicized for his troubled personal life.
While Pattinson’s Instagram feed is packed with photos of beautiful women (and a few dogs), Holland’s feed is mostly filled with behind-the-scenes photos from his work on set. He is best known for his roles in the films “Westworld” and “The Final Year”, as well as the HBO series “The Night Of”.
Despite their differences, both men share a love for film and a genuine interest in each other’s work. As a result, it’s no surprise that Holland and Pattinson got along so well during their initial meetings, and that they eventually began spending more and more time together. After a while, the pair even considered moving in together. However, things didn’t work out for the two Hollywood stars, and they have since gone their separate ways.
The question now is, will they ever work together again? And if so, will they be able to coexist? It’s a difficult question, but one that may determine the next phase of their professional and personal lives.
A Friendship Born of Creativity
The story of Holland and Pattinson’s unlikely friendship begins in October 2016, when both men were working on separate films in England. While filming the Netflix rom-com “The Stranger”, Pattinson decided to take a walk and grab some sushi, and on his way there he crossed paths with Holland.
The English actor was heading to a party at a friend’s house, and after chatting for a few minutes, Pattinson invited him to come along. When they arrived at the house party, the two men decided to stay and hang out. While the other guests went upstairs to change, the two actors sat at the bar and chatted about their work. As Holland said about this early meeting: “We just connected over our shared love of film. It was a real creative friendship. We were both open to new ideas, and that is what ultimately led to us working together.”
It was around this time that Pattinson became aware of Holland’s talent for improv. While filming “The Revenant”, the actor noticed that his co-star had a habit of coming up with new scenes on the spot, and he began to appreciate how much creativity their union could produce.
The following month, while working on the Netflix thriller “The Kissing Booth”, Pattinson invited Holland to another house party, where they could both get away from the hustle and bustle of the set. During this second gathering, the two men discussed creating a musical project, and decided to work together on a script for a musical comedy. They began to write songs and sketches together, and even though the project wasn’t going to be filmed, they decided to put it online so that they could continue working on it.
When the “Twilight” series ended in 2017, and the pair went their separate ways, they both decided to continue working in the film industry. Pattinson decided to move to Los Angeles, while Holland moved to New York. However, both men maintained contact with each other, and when “Westworld” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018, Holland was invited to attend the event. He accepted the invitation, and the two subsequently stayed in touch.
A Shared Interest In Music
Pattinson has a background in music, and has always considered himself to be something of a singer-songwriter. He has a band with his longtime friend Luke Bonatto, and the two have recently started working on a music project together. However, for the most part, his love for music has remained somewhat private, and he rarely performs or promotes his songs. When he does, it’s usually for a big cause, such as when he performed at the 2017 Grammy Awards to raise money for the victims of the 2017 California wildfires.
In a 2017 interview with The Independent, Pattinson discussed why he doesn’t promote his music, and said the following: “I don’t do it for fame. I’ve never really thought about it like that. I do it because I enjoy singing. I enjoy playing music and dancing around with my band. I think in a way that if I don’t do it now, I’d regret it later because it’s something that I really want to do.”
For his part, Holland is also a singer, and throughout his career has fronted several bands, including The Hot Natured and The Boyfriends. He even went back to school to study music, and has a private lesson every week.
Unlike Pattinson, Holland has always pursued a public profile, and has often discussed his love for performing and being in the spotlight. In an August 2017 interview with The Independent, he said the following: “I enjoy showing off my singing voice, but I have always been really grateful that my acting has meant I can earn a living singing. I feel like I wouldn’t have had the same opportunities if I didn’t also have the ability to act; it’s always been a really beautiful thing to me. People assume that musicians aren’t capable of doing anything else, but I think that my success in both areas has meant I can do more things—it’s allowed me to grow.”
With their shared interest in music and singing, it’s no wonder that Holland and Pattinson decided to work together on a musical. However, instead of devising and performing the songs themselves, they hired an indie pop band from London to help them with creative input and to lend their unique voices to the tracks.
Pattinson And Holland Join Forces, And It’s… A Happy Match?
The two men finally decided to put their creative differences aside, and in September 2018 they began working on a new TV project together. They have yet to reveal details about the show, but they have both said that it will be set in London and will star an English actor and an English actress. If the project goes ahead as planned, it will be one of the first times that Pattinson and Hollands have worked together. However, it won’t be their first encounter with each other; before their professional relationship, the pair had already worked together on several occasions, including the 2011 film adaptation of D.W. Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel”.
The actor has a pretty significant fanbase on social media, and has nearly 10 million followers on Instagram. In February 2018, he celebrated reaching the milestone of 100 million followers on the platform, and in a since-deleted tweet, he expressed his excitement about working with Holland again. “Can’t wait to share these stories with you,” he wrote. “Was really inspired by your work, and can’t wait to continue creating together.”
Holland, too, has experienced significant success on social media. He has over 7.5 million followers on Instagram, and is often hired to provide voice-overs for brands’ advertisements. In addition, he also has 1.2 million followers on Twitter, where he often posts behind-the-scenes photos from his work. For the most part, his social media accounts are private, and he rarely discusses work or professional matters there. However, in a 2017 interview with the Huffington Post, he said the following about the changing nature of social media and the role it plays in our lives: “I’m not hiding the fact that I’ve got a really big account on social media. I’m really proud of it. I think it’s opened a lot of doors for me, professionally and creatively. It’s always nice when people notice your work and want to work with you. The more platforms and the more accounts you have, the more opportunities you have to be noticed.”
So, will these two talented men ever work together again? It’s hard to say. While all signs point to yes, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. What is certain is that their collaboration was exhilarating, and it will be interesting to see what future projects they come up with.
