It seems like just yesterday we were lamenting the departure of Hollywood’s finest hair, Brad Pitt. Since then, the hairstyle mill has been working at a breakneck pace, trying to keep up with the latest hair trends. With each new hairstyle and haircut that comes out, we are left wondering — will this be the one that finally puts an end to the six-month-long haircut craze?

This year has seen some pretty amazing hairdos. From short-shorts to the ever-popular choppy hair, here are the top ten hair trends for 2020.

Short Shorts

Short-shorts have been a thing for a while now, but they really came into their own this year. From celebrity Instagrammers like Jada Pinkett Smith and Lupita Nyong’o to everyday women trying to inject a little romance into their plain ol’ lives, everyone seems to be sportin’ their faves. From micro-short shorts for women to ultra-short shorts for men, you can never have too many pairs of shorts if you ask us. Bonus points: Many of these celebs are also making the most of their enviable bikini bodies by swimming in the sea and showing off their sweet tans.

Chopped Off Hair

Another big trend this season was the chopped-off hairstyle. We’re not talking about the classic bowl cut here — the jug-handle shape has taken the crown as the top haircut of the year. Celebrities have been sporting it for years, but it wasn’t until now that everyone from Zendaya to Megan Jayne Crabbe to TikTok’s very own Mandy Moore have had enough of hair growing down their backs. There’s something about that awkward, lopsided look that just makes us want to grab a pair of scissors and give it a quick chop.

Abracadabra

We’re pretty sure that Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling said it best when she tweeted, “Abracadabra! The magic word is ‘abracadabra!'” This year saw magical abracadabras taking over our timelines. Since the magic syllable came from the fictional wizard, Albus Dumbledore, we assume that it will be used primarily for magical purposes. (We’ll have to wait and see how fans are utilizing this new word in real life.) It seems that everyone, from politicians to celebrities, has had enough of politics as usual and are looking for ways to bring about change. With the world looking for a way to heal, many have turned to alternative medicine — hoping that a sprinkle of magic will help them along the way.

Fingerless Gloves

Speaking of hoping for a change, the year 2020 was also the year of the fingerless glove. From Lupita Nyong’o’s daring white dresses to Jada Pinkett Smith’s statement-making white dresses, we can’t seem to keep our eyes off those exquisite hands. We’re not sure if it was Elizabeth Taylor’s funeral or just the simple act of slipping on a set of embroidered mittens that made these outfits iconic, but it’s clear that these gloves were as fashionable as they were functional. Fingerless gloves are also making a comeback after being a popular choice among screen actors for several years. Whether you’re an A-list celebrity or just trying to inject a little glam into your regular night out, these gloves will have you looking stylish and feeling secure.

Sunny Jeans

Speaking of coming back, we couldn’t talk about top haircuts this year without mentioning the comeback of sunny jeans. Yes, those baggy, American football-shaped pants that we wore in the ‘90s and early aughts have been making a comeback. This year, everyone from Demi Moore to Jaden Smith to Cher to Amy Schumer has been sporting them. They’re even getting the retro treatment, with retro fashion studios like Retro Revival reinterpreting the look for modern times.

Hippie Hair

It seems that 2020 is the revival of old trends and the bringing of new ones. We’ve seen lots of different hairstyles and haircuts in 2020, but none more exciting than hippie hair. Remember those crazy hair days of the ‘70s? Well, the ‘80s, ‘90s and early aughts were also the golden age of the hippie haircut. The look has made a triumphant return this year, with Hollywood celebs like Elle Fanning, Dakota Johnson, Brooklyn Beckham and many more sporting their locks. (And we’re sure that many of you reading this have also tried it out; it’s not like we’re singling out anyone in particular.) We’re not sure if it’s the retro aesthetics of the ‘70s or if it’s just a revival of good old-fashioned longer hair, but we can’t seem to get enough of those hair moments.

Metallic Tones

In addition to all these hair trends, 2020 was also the year of the metallic tones. From Megan Jayne Crabbe’s nudes to Jada Pinkett Smith’s statement-making nudes, we can’t seem to get enough of those metallic tones. Since the invention of artificial furniture paint, people have been treating their houses to additional pop with metallic tones. This trend looks good enough to eat and we can’t resist those bright colors and shining metals.

Masks

Another big trend this year was masks. We’re not talking about the scary Halloween masks either; we’re referring to the fun, friendly masks that you wear to hide your identity. Celebrities are constantly finding ways to have fun and be different with their clothes and their attitude. They aren’t afraid to show off their quirks and we love them for it. With Halloween coming up, we think it’s a great time to sport silly masks and have some fun.

Rocking The Rat Tail

The return of the rat tail is one of the biggest hair trends of 2020. Since the beginning of the year, we’ve been seeing these delightful rat tails pop up on our social media feeds and in our dreams. We’ve seen them on celebrities, trendsetters and even social media stars who have millions of followers. The rat tail is so much more than just a haircut — it’s a way of life. Those of you who have tried it out seem to really enjoy the playful, fun vibe of this trend. It’s time to take the rat tail back once more.

Dazed And Confused

We can’t close this article without talking about the dazed and confused look. This year has seen this trend reign supreme, with everyone from Megan J. Crabbe to Jaden Smith to Cher to Demi Moore and even Mandy Moore having their own unique spin on the dazed and confused look. (Mandy Moore’s dazed and confused look is our personal favorite.) We’re sure that many of you have tried this look out, whether you’re a fashion icon or just want to look chic and feel comfortable every day.

Now that we’ve covered the basics about the top haircuts for 2020, we’d like to hear from you. Which trend are you most excited about?
