While most people are happy to be engaged or married, some individuals can’t help but feel a little down. For tattoo artist and designer Robert Pattinson, his fiancee Emily Blunt, and their friends, the feeling was especially pronounced. After all, the gorgeous couple were set to walk down the aisle in a lavish ceremony in front of hundreds of guests. But, in a heartbreaking turn of events, Emily was left with a broken heart just as the wedding day was about to begin.
Despite the tragic turn of events, Robert has chosen to look at the positive side of the story and use it as a platform to discuss body positivity, feminism, and more. Tattooing is, in fact, a form of self-expression for many, but it’s also become a means for people to communicate important messages, both personal and political. So, even though Emily and Robert’s wedding day was overshadowed by terrible tragedy, the design artist still sees the silver lining.
“I think that the fact that Emily’s dress was chosen to be a symbol of their broken engagement is a beautiful and unique twist to the day,” Robert tells W Magazine. “I am so proud that she decided to put the dress on to show the world that she is a strong and independent woman.”
But what does Robert himself think about his career? Does he see himself as a role model or just as a guy who loves to draw? And what is his take on the body positivity movement? We sat down with the wedding designer to get his thoughts on these topics and more. Here is what he had to say.
Body Positivity
In the months leading up to the wedding, Emily and Robert were very open about their relationship. They were arguably one of the most talked-about celebrity couples in the world, and it wasn’t hard to see why. The gorgeous pair were incredibly affectionate and showed off their affection in every way possible, especially on social media.
While many people are happy to shower praise on the happy couple, it’s important to remember that they are also human. Like most people, they experience their fair share of anxiety and insecurity about their bodies. In fact, one of Emily’s close friends pointed out that their body issues are directly linked to their insecurities about their career. In her own words, the actress struggles with body confidence, saying,
“I always worry that people will think I’m too skinny or that my legs are too skinny or that my arms are too skinny. I never know what to wear because I don’t feel that I’m dressed appropriately for the occasion. I have to think about what my mum would say about my outfit, what my girlfriends would say. It’s horrible.”
Emily and Robert’s body positivity moment came when they shared an adorable video of themselves cuddling up on a couch and admiring each other’s curves. In the video, posted to Instagram on October 17, 2017, Emily is seen wearing a white dress and high heels. Sitting down with Robert, she compliments him on his appearance and then lays down next to him, holding his hand and gazing lovingly into his eyes. After a few moments, Emily whispers in his ear, “I love your body,” to which Robert replies, “You’re so beautiful.” The dress that Emily wore was designed by the renowned Christian Siriani and featured a sweetheart neckline, a slim fit, and a beautiful floral print.
“This was one of my favorite dresses. It’s so perfect for the wedding, and I wore it with my hair and makeup done by the experts at Harvey Nichols,” Emily gushes. “It was such an incredible day, and Rob and I both looked amazing.”
A Role Model
While Emily and Robert were happy to acknowledge their love for each other in public, it’s important to remember that they are also role models for many. If you’re a young woman looking for inspiration, you could do a lot worse than checking out Emily and Robert’s Instagram account. The gorgeous couple routinely post gorgeous photos of themselves, often with captions praising body positivity and feminism.
It’s important to remember that not all celebrity couples are created equal, and there is a considerable difference in the way that Robert and Emily behave versus, say, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn. One thing that the designer tells W Magazine is that he strives to be an honest and genuine person, which he says makes him a better role model. He also credits his success in part to his parents, who instilled in him a strong work ethic from an early age.
The Future
As much as we’d all like to believe that celebs are immune to the stresses of everyday life, relationships, and work, we know that it’s not true. It’s just that many of them are so busy that they don’t have time to dwell on their problems. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have them. In fact, Robert tells W that he believes that his engagement with Emily will prove to be a turning point in his life and help him to become a better person. And, as if to prove his point, he adds that he hopes to one day have a family of his own and that he intends to be there for the children he may have one day with Emily.
We can’t help but feel that this is a bit of a cop-out. After all, it was just a few months ago that he was lamenting the fact that he hadn’t found the “sacred union” that he was looking for. So, it’s not like he’s suddenly changed his tune. Still, it’s better than nothing. And maybe, just maybe, he’ll surprise us and make us believe that all relationships, even those with the most unlikely of couples, have a chance of being blessed.
