After the much buzzed-about premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Hollywood seems to have gone back to normal, at least temporarily. While the cast and crew were out celebrating the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles, it seems as though they’ve all now returned to work. Which is lucky for us, because the saga is far from over.
The film’s director, Bill Condon, recently spoke with Esquire about his upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated comedy Grown Ups 2 and the fantasy adventure The Golden Circle. He also discussed Breaking Dawn’s sequel with the press, including its biggest challenges and his reasoning behind the unusual ending.
Has The Twilight Saga Ended Yet?
When Condon was asked if he had any idea what the future of the Twilight franchise held, he said, “No. I have no idea. Look, we’ve had ten years of incredible success, and I just want to make sure we keep on going. At this point, I don’t even know if there is an end in sight.”
The director went on to say that while he would like to continue making Twilight films, he’s also open to exploring other projects. “I would love to make more Twilight films. I think that the idea of telling this story with this group of actors – Kristen [Stewart], Taylor [Lautner], and Peter [Furtado] – is just so exciting. I just keep playing it over in my mind, thinking of all the cool things we could do. But maybe it’s time to walk down a different path for a change.”
Why Did It End This Way?
When Condon was asked if he had any idea why the Twilight Saga ended the way it did, he said, “I had just this overwhelming feeling, for lack of a better word, that the series needed to end now. I can’t explain it. It’s just something that I felt in my bones, and it wasn’t difficult to convince myself. I wanted this to be the end of the journey for these characters.”
However, the director wasn’t done yet. He also felt that Part 2, the most recent film in the series, represented a major turning point for the story. “I think that this is the beginning of the end. I don’t know if we’ll ever see Taylor’s hair that way again. I think that this is the final shot for this trio, and it’s very representative of the entire series. It’s not just a film; it’s the end of an era.”
What’s Next For The Characters?
While it’s sad that the Twilight Saga is coming to an end, it’s also fortunate that we’re getting a third novel in the series, titled The Dark Swan. As the novel’s author, James Dashner, recently told Entertainment Weekly, “When you write the last book in a series, there is this sense of finality to it. But for fans, there’s a sense of satisfaction that you didn’t blow it. You left everything on a high note.”
Dashner also discussed The Dark Swan’s unique writing process. “It was pretty incredible. I sat down and wrote the first draft of the book in about ten days. I was just running on adrenaline, because I knew that I had to write it fast, to keep up with James [Crowley, the lead character] and Tamsin [Wild].”
While it isn’t quite clear yet what will happen in The Dark Swan, Dashner did reveal that it will be an adventure novel similar to the rest of the series. “It picks up quickly where [Breaking Dawn] left off. As soon as you read it, you’ll know exactly what’s going on. That’s the great thing about this series: it’s consistent in its storytelling.”
The Dark Swan will be released on October 25, 2014.
Challenges And Rewards Of Directing A Prequel
During the press roundtable for Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Condon discussed some of the unique challenges that came with directing a prequel. “It was really fun to sit there and think about where these characters were and what they were doing. It was also interesting, because I had to learn a little bit more about the characters before I could bring them to life on screen. But once I did, it was like a whole other ballgame. I was just looking at the storyboards and being like, ‘Oh my goodness, thank God I’m going to get to do this.'”
While it’s always an exciting challenge to take on a new project, Condon knew that the biggest reward would come from being able to finish what he started nearly a decade ago. “At the end of the day, it’s what I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been waiting to do these characters justice, and now I get to do it. I get to end this story, and I couldn’t be more proud. At the same time, it’s going to be really hard to say goodbye to these characters. I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that.”
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 will be released in theaters on November 16, 2014.
