Robert Pattinson has become an FBI Special Agent. The actor, in-demand for his film roles, finally made the transition from the big screen to the small one, with The Sinner, an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name. The film also stars Megan Fox, John Goodman, and Tommy Lee Jones (in his last role).

Ellis’ 1995 novel was adapted for the big screen in 2011, with New Regency and Warner Bros. Robert Pattinson played the role of Ellis, a young and idealistic FBI agent who gets paired up with an old friend, John Gavin (Jones), on a case in Los Angeles. The pair becomes obsessed with the case and, as a result, begin to question everything they believe in and value. Jones’ Gavin is described as a complicated and unpredictable man who drives the story forward.

It was reported in April 2019 that Pattinson had joined the bureau, and the details of his first assignment are said to be a closely guarded secret. The London-born actor has become the first Englishman to join the elite ranks of the FBI, which was founded in 1908.

An Early Education In Theater

Although he began acting in theater productions at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, Robert Pattinson received little formal training as an actor. He instead relied on trial and error and a strict work ethic to develop his craft. After graduating in 2011, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his blossoming career. There, he secured a regular role on the legal drama, The Americans, and then went on to star in the Divergent series, The Divergent Series: Allegiant and The Divergent Series: Shoppe, opposite Lily Collins.

Pattinson is perhaps best known for his role as a vampire hunter in the indie film, What Evil Lurks, and he continues to work in the genre, having signed on for a role in The House with the Laughing Windows.

A Career In Film

While in Los Angeles, Pattinson was determined to secure major roles in major films, gaining valuable experience on smaller projects along the way. He made his big-budget debut in 2015 with the action film, The Force Awakens, which went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. He then starred in the epic romance epic, Eyes Wide Shut, which was adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Twilight author, Stephanie Meyer. The film marked his second collaboration with director Stanley Kubrick and writer Frederic Zelnik. It was a critical and box office smash.

The following year, Pattinson had a supporting role in the heist film, Hacksaw Ridge, and then portrayed Prince Albert in the Oscar-winning war film, 1917. During this time, he also worked steadily on smaller-scale productions, most notably, in the 2017 release, The House of Gucci, costarring with Jennifer Lopez and Robert De Niro. In 2020, he will appear in Woody Allen’s next film, due for release in May.

A Life In The Service

For those interested in the law, Pattinson is said to have chosen a career in the FBI because of a lifelong interest in justice. He is reportedly the first Englishman to join the bureau and is determined to use his position to better society. In signing up, he stated: “I’ve always been a fan of the federal government and I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity there. I’m excited to be learning more about the justice system and how to help protect people’s rights.”

The role of an FBI Special Agent is said to be very hands-on, with the field agent carrying out investigations and spending up to 20 hours a day on the job. He or she may attend debriefings with senior officials from the bureau, be required to interrogate witnesses and suspects, and work undercover, among other things. Additionally, the work is considered highly demanding and can be stressful, with agents having to contend with physical and mental challenges. The field agent is also required to attend conferences and classes to keep abreast of the latest developments and investigative techniques. As a result, the job requires a lot of time off, with only 28% of agents claiming to work regular hours. It is not uncommon for agents to put in 80 to 100 hours a week, 6 to 7 days a week. In order to succeed in this demanding job, one must be prepared to put in the necessary hours and be dedicated to their career.

The Sinner

Pattinson’s career in film has provided him with opportunities to work with some of the industry’s biggest names. The actor is set to star in two major upcoming films: Marriage Story, with New York acting heavyweights, Pete and Fran Farbrace, and The Wedding Ringer, costarring with Tiffany Haddish. He will then reprise his role as Prince Albert in the upcoming drama, King George, alongside Naomi Watts, Ben Whishaw and Laura Dern.

On a personal note, this has been a rather significant year for me. Not only have I finally managed to secure a role that I feel passionate about, but 2019 has seen me work with some incredible people. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the world.
