Kunstvandteller Robert Pattinson has travelled more than a few of the places we have on this list. The British actor has been to almost all of these locations, though many are ones he’s revisited more than once. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to photograph the legendary Johannesburg Boerne is one that will stick out for him. It was here, back in 2014, that he finally got the chance to see one of the greatest cities of the old continent. As well as getting to shoot in front of its iconic landmarks, he also got to experience a part of South Africa’s history that most people can’t get a chance to see.
A City Rich In Culture
In the 100 years before the Second World War, Johannesburg was the place to be. Its spectacular buildings and cultural life entertained the likes of George Bernard Shaw, Charlie Chaplin, and HG Wells. Since the abolition of apartheid in 1994, the city has been a place of tolerance and respect, with people of all races living together in harmony. It is now home to around 4.5 million people, with a youthful population that is emerging as one of the great cultural hubs of the 21st century. Much like its counterpart to the north, Cape Town, Johannesburg is a city that has a vibrancy and cosmopolitanism that draws people in from all over the world. Whether you’re visiting for a couple of days or a week, there are plenty of things for you to do in Johannesburg.
A City Of Fashion And Style
One of the things that make Johannesburg such a fascinating city is the fact that it houses some of the greatest stores found anywhere. From top-tier design houses to smaller family-run boutiques, there is a wealth of fashion and style to be found in the city. If you visit at the right time of year, you will be able to see many of the annual fashion and style events that are associated with black-tie-wedding season in Johannesburg. This means that it is fashionably acceptable to get married in a stunning white dress and attend the wedding ceremony in a classical outfit. The best time for you to visit the city is between October and April, when the weather is good and you can take a walk without getting too hot or cold. Though summer is the best time to visit Cape Town, Johannesburg never really gets so hot that it’s not viable to go outside without air-conditioning. In summer, it can get very humid and muggy, with thunderstorms being a common occurrence, so make sure you prepare for the weather in case it is thundery and you want to stay indoors.
A City Of Spas And Boutique Hotels
There are many fabulous spas in and around Johannesburg. The city is fortunate enough to have three beautiful rivers flowing through it. The Klip River, which the city is named after, has several dams and waterfalls that are a picturesque addition to any stroll through the city. The largest of these is Table Mountain, with its iconic Afrikaans name, Kaapstad, meaning the city of ripples or waves. In summer, you can take a trip on a paddle boat down the Klip River, which is bordered by waterfalls that are a spectacular sight particularly in the rain. For those seeking adventure, there is the option of abseiling down the side of Table Mountain or taking a hike to the top. When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with incredible panoramic views that take in the whole of Johannesburg below you and far into the African veldt beyond.
A City Of Festivals And Parks
One of the things that make Johannesburg such an interesting city to visit is the sheer number of festivals and events that take place there throughout the year. From jazz and theatre festivals to art exhibitions and fashion weeks, there is always something going on. Whether you’re looking for thrill-seeking or just want to get away for a few days, you will definitely not get bored in Johannesburg.
One of the major sporting events that is closely associated with the city is the Johannesburg International Festival of Music. This five-day festival takes place every other year and features some of the world’s finest musicians playing for appreciative audiences. The venues at which the concerts take place are spectacular and include some of the city’s most revered concert halls, such as the Civic, the Coliseum, and the Johannesburg Arts Festival Hall. In addition to concerts, the festival also features theatre, dance, and opera. The whole family will have a brilliant time here. If you go during this time of year, make sure you book tickets in advance as tickets are often sold out well in advance.
