While the world was still recovering from the 2017 movie megahaul, a new year was already on its way. And what a year it was! From great performances to incredible films, it was an eventful year for cinema. Naturally, there was also a lot of movie news. From Oscars to Golden Globes, people were talking about their favorite movies and the best performances. Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to look back and see how the year progressed. And one of the most prominent stories of the year was none other than the Hollywood blockbuster “Sorcerer’s Stone”.
Released in March of this year, “Sorcerer’s Stone” is the long-awaited followup to the mega-successful “Venom”. Directed by David Lynch, the highly anticipated film sees Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the titular character, a sorcerer who, in the tradition of the greats like Houdini and Richard Simmons, uses his extraordinary talents to help other people and solve their problems. In order to find out more about this cinematic milestone, let’s take a look at how the year progressed and what we know about the making of “Sorcerer’s Stone” so far.
The Making of ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’
There is no question that “Sorcerer’s Stone” is one of the most unique films in recent history. Before the start of production, the entire film was shot using only a green screen. This allowed the filmmakers to digitally insert Robert Pattinson into all the scenes. So, while the actor was actually acting, he never left the frame. This makes the entire film feel like a giant demo reel. It’s not that there isn’t any dialog or narrative. There is, and part of it even makes sense. But it all feels incredibly fake. Especially since it’s clear that some of the scenes were definitely not meant to be taken at face value. For example, one of the first scenes shows Pattinson waking up and getting into his pajamas in the morning. After which, we see a strange creature standing in front of a mirror. The creature is clearly a reference to the famous “Sleeping Beauty” scene from Walt Disney’s “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. But instead of a fairy godmother, we get a talking parrot. This scene was actually meant to represent the beginning of Pattinson’s transformation into the character of Dr. John Dee. Or, as he’s better known to his fans, “Mr. Serratus”.
Mr. Serratus is the world-weary, bearded, pseudo-scientific sidekick to Dr. John Dee. Backed by Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, and Val Kilmer, among others, the character first appeared in Neil Gaiman’s “Good Omens” and has since appeared in every subsequent adaptation. While the scene itself is quite funny, it’s clear that this was definitely not meant to be taken seriously. Which makes it even more bizarre considering that it was one of the first scenes shot for the movie. This is probably because David Lynch likes to experiment with his casts and crews, and he wanted to see how the idea of a talking parrot would translate on screen.
The Great Performances
Although “Sorcerer’s Stone” has been the subject of much critical discussion and a lot of insider chatter, the film itself is actually quite good. And it’s not just because of the performances. The film is visually stunning, and it boasts an incredible soundtrack by Radiohead. Topping off what is already a terrific movie, the performances are pitch-perfect. Even if many of the jokes fall flat, it’s still hard to deny that Robert Pattinson and the other actors do a tremendous job.
The fact that so much was made about the casting of Robert Pattinson is quite indicative of how highly this film was thought of by critics and audiences alike. So, it’s no wonder that the hype surrounding “Sorcerer’s Stone” was both great and well-deserved. After all, the dude is pretty good at playing witches and wizards. So, let’s stop calling him “Twilight” and start calling him “Wanderer”.
Oscars, Golden Globes, and More
As mentioned above, one of the most prominent stories of the year was “Sorcerer’s Stone”. And it wasn’t hard to see why. After all, the movie stars Robert Pattinson, Emily Mortimer, Val Kilmer, Michael Caine, and many more. But the most prominent story was the seven-time Academy Awards nominee, who finally won an award last week. The win was for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Sorcerer’s Stone”. While this is only one of the many awards that Robert Pattinson has won throughout his impressive career, it’s still a prestigious recognition. Especially since it came last week, in the middle of what had been an incredibly busy year. And it was well-deserved. As much as anyone would love to take issue with any of Mr. Serratus’s complaints about the state of the world, he still ends every episode in a positive manner. By contrast, the other characters in the series are generally pessimistic and often resort to violence and trickery to solve their problems. This is the epitome of a performance that shines through comic strips and films. One that makes the audience laugh while also making them think about the issues that the character is facing.
This is one of the things that makes Robert Pattinson such a versatile actor. While he is best known for his performances in “Twilight” and its various sequels, he has also proven himself to be a capable dramatic actor. Even if he does seem to specialize in comic relief roles, he is more than capable of taking on a dramatic role, as was the case with “Sorcerer’s Stone”. And he will continue to prove that he can tackle any role that he sets his mind to, regardless of how preposterous or complex the character might be.
Where Can I Watch ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ Online?
Considering that so much was made about “Sorcerer’s Stone” throughout the year, it’s no wonder that it was such a prominent topic of conversation. Naturally, many were curious about where they could actually watch it. And, fortunately, the answer is quite simple. While it’s not yet available for general consumption, you can buy a copy directly from Netflix or any other streaming service. As long as you have an internet connection and a Netflix account, you can watch the entirety of “Sorcerer’s Stone” online. And considering that Michael Caine, who has a bit part in the film, tweeted that it’s one of the best films of the year, we’d say that you should definitely rent it (or buy it) as soon as possible.
