If you’re a fan of the Twilight saga, you’ll most likely have already seen the short film Hot Dog. It’s been around for a while now (over a year), but just recently became available on YouTube.

The short film was directed by the incredibly talented Robert Pattinson, and stars his real life girlfriend, Kristen Stewart. In the film, we follow the couple as they prepare a hot dog for themselves. It’s a very funny and sweet story that explores the nature of love and commitment. The two leads play off each other well, and the whole movie is full of laugh out loud moments.

Since the film’s release, it’s become quite the popular topic among fans. And it’s not hard to see why. Not only does it feature an incredible cast, but it also has one of the best endings any of the Twilight Saga movies. What’s more is that it explores some very interesting themes – like trust and commitment – which definitely makes it worth a watch. So, if you haven’t seen Hot Dog yet, here’s your chance to see it before it gets banned from YouTube.

The Story So Far

The story of Hot Dog begins four years ago when the Twilight Saga was first released. At the time, Rob Pattinson, then known professionally as Robert, was already a well-established actor with some pretty high-profile movies under his belt. He’d also recently finished filming the final installment in the Twilight Saga, Eclipse. For fans of the books, this was the culmination of months of buildup, anticipation, and obsession. For those who’d never read the books, it was still a good introduction to the Twilight world and its many colorful characters.

The previous two Twilight movies had both been box office successes and critical darlings. In fact, many had considered Eclipse to be the best of the series. So with the final installment in the books now complete and the film wrapping up its theatrical run, it was time for Rob to move on to the next phase of his career.

Around this time, fans began speculating about which project he’d work on next. Many expected him to return to the world of vampires, with which he’s become extremely well-versed, or he could delve into the world of werewolves, as he’s also done in the past. But, as fate would have it, Rob would embark on a brand new journey – becoming one with the hound dogs of Florence, Italy, and learning how to make the most authentic Hot Dog in the region. Of course, he wouldn’t be the only actor to tackle this subject matter. Over the years, many famous faces have appeared in cameos – including Robert DeNiro, who even offers to be the voice of the protagonist’s father. So, there’s certainly more than one way to skin a hot dog.

What Is A Hot Dog?

If you’ve never heard of a Hot Dog, you’re probably asking yourself the same question. After all, the name alone doesn’t exactly sound appetizing. But, despite its unfortunate moniker, the hot dog is in fact a very unique and versatile ingredient. It can be cooked in so many ways that it’s difficult to classify it as a single item – much like yourself, perhaps, in the coming years.

Traditionally, a hot dog is made with a wiener, which is a long and skinny type of sausage. But as we’ve established, Rob is not your average Joe. So, instead of a traditional pork product, he uses bison, because why not? Plus, he’s a vegetarian now so it makes sense that he’d opt for vegetable sausages rather than fleshy ones. The end result is a very unique and enjoyable sausage that wouldn’t look out of place in a fine dining establishment.

One particularly mouthwatering way to enjoy a hot dog is via a wood-fired oven. The flatbread known as pizza or foccacia can be served for dessert and it goes perfectly with a cold beer or soft drink. Plus, what’s better than dessert and drink in the same course? You could always top your pizza with something green, like arugula or basil for an extra bite of freshness.

Where Did The Name Come From?

If you think the name Hot Dog sounds a little bit too much like something you’d find on supermarket shelves, you’re absolutely right. When asked about the origin of the name, Robert responded, “It’s so disgusting. I should’ve called it ‘Love Dog’ or something like that. But I didn’t want to upset anyone…” He then laughed.

The name Hot Dog was inspired by one of the town’s most prominent citizens, Mr. Hoenig. According to legend, Mr. Hoenig owned a pet store in town and he would go around the area ordering local dogs to come in and play. So, when Rob decided to base the main character’s name on this man, he gave him the nickname Hot Dog. And to this day, the name continues to be thrown around at the store Hoenig Petes – even though Mr. Hoenig passed away 30 years ago.

Where Do The Sausages Go?

If you’re still reading this, you must be wondering where the sausage goes after it’s been cooked. Like most processed meats, hot dogs are best consumed immediately – or at least the same day – because the flavors lose their depth once the food is frozen or stored for later use. You can keep a hot dog in the fridge for about a day before it starts to lose its flavor. After that, eat it or use it in cooking as soon as possible.

If you’re planning to use your hot dog for the evening’s meal, you might want to try wrapping it in foil and popping it in the oven for a few minutes to make it more appealing – more reminiscent of an expensive cut of beef than a cheap and cheerful food item. This is especially important if you’re grilling the dog and serving it at a picnic or barbecue – it’s a nice way to add a little bit of luxury to what would otherwise be a simple meal.

If you want your hot dog to have a long shelf life, you should probably avoid using thick or lean meats – the juices from such meats don’t protect the food well enough from going bad. Instead, choose fatty meats such as liver, kidney, or tripe – which will add a lot of flavor to the end product. Of course, the type of sausage you use depends on what kind of vehicle you’ll be driving – the thicker the better for longer road trips, and vice versa. If you’re planning to eat your hot dog on the go, then thin and short sausages are your best bet, as they don’t keep well in the fridge. They also travel well, so if you’ve got somewhere to be, and you don’t want to stop for lunch, then sausage dog is the way to go.

Authentic Italo-American Cuisine

Aside from learning to cook an incredible array of foods, one of the things Rob embraced while in Italy was the culture and the way of life. This is most easily evidenced by his decision to base the restaurant he opened in Florence on Italian soil on the cuisine of his home. As a result, the restaurant serves up authentic Italyo-American cuisine and the pizza, which shares its name with the American biscuit, is in fact very similar to a Neapolitan pizza – only thicker. In addition, the flatbread is served in a slightly different way. Rather than being folded or rolled, as you’d find with a traditionally made pizza, the focaccia is cut into small squares or triangles – very similar to a classic French baguette. Finally, one of the best parts of going to a restaurant is the way people interact and the way they enjoy food together. So, when you eat at an Italian restaurant and pay for each piece of food individually, you can get a glimpse into how traditional Italian dining is really meant to be experienced.
