While much of the world was distracted by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the ongoing pandemic, a major motion picture was quietly released in theaters around the world. Directed by Rainer Weiss with a screenplay by William Morrow and Pete Ferris, the film is titled “The Light Between Us,” and it stars multiple award-winning actor Robert Pattinson (“The Lost Weekend,” “Sideways”) and Sam Claflin (“Little Women,” “Once Upon a Time”). The film also stars Douglas Booth (“The Lord of the Rings”), who plays Céleste, a regular guy who finds himself unexpectedly drawn to a socially awkward woman (Pattinson) and their unconventional family, including a teenage daughter (Elle Fanning) and a hyperactive son (Augie Doggie Dog). Amidst the turmoil and confusion of daily life, the movie explores what it means to be human and offers some much-needed levity in these uncertain times.

Robert Pattinson

While many celebrities went dark or avoided the spotlight during the pandemic, “The Light Between Us” stars Robert Pattinson, who stepped out for a romantic comedy in 2020.

Pattinson was born in Hertfordshire, England on January 12, 1986. He began acting on the stage at age five and later starred in “Wish You Were Here,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” and “The Lost City.” After moving to Los Angeles at age sixteen, he landed roles in “The Twilight Series,” “The Nightfall,” and “Good Time.” The British actor then went on to star in “Cosmopolis,” “Dynasty,” and “The Laundromat,” and he will next be seen in the upcoming “Black Widow” and “King of Devil’s Island.”

Sam Claflin

Sam Claflin had never acted before he was cast in “The Light Between Us.” The Irish actor grew up in Dublin and won an IFTA award for his performance in “Killing Me Softly.” Claflin has since starred in films such as “An Education,” “Toy Story 4,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “Peter Pan.” He will next be seen in the upcoming “The Soulless” and “The Predator.”

Douglas Booth

Douglas Booth began his acting career portraying villains in Disney films, but he later shifted focus to portray the heroes of fiction. His first major role was the eponymous character in “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” Since then, he has gone on to appear in “The Hunger Games” and “The Martian,” and in 2020 he will reprise his role as Céleste in “The Light Between Us.” Booth is also a musician, and he released an album in 2019 that was inspired by his time on the set of “The Light Between Us.”

Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning, who will soon turn thirteen, began acting at a young age, and she has since starred in “Penny Dreadful,” “Glass,” and “Midsommar.” She will next be seen in the upcoming “Neverland” and “The Kidnapping of Sabrina.”

Augie Doggie Dog

Augie Doggie Dog, who will be four years old in 2021, has already proved himself to be a prodigy. He made his acting debut at age four in “The Light Between Us,” and since then he has starred in several more films and TV shows, including “The Hallmark Channel Presents: Haven,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and “Black Widow.”

The Plot

Set in Brooklyn, New York, “The Light Between Us” follows several interconnected stories that revolve around the central characters of Robert Pattinson’s Catherine Weaver and Sam Claflin’s Mike Faber. The two meet online when Faber, a forty-something divorcee, writes a blog post confessing his love for a much younger woman named Catherine. As the blog post goes viral, Faber is forced to confront his sexuality and the woman, who he later learns is a clinical psychologist, falls into harm’s way. While trying to work past their problems, the two accidentally meet again when Catherine seeks therapy from Faber following a dangerous incident that leaves her scarred and battling addiction. Amidst the chaos and confusion of daily life, the movie explores what it means to be human and offers some much-needed levity in these uncertain times.

Themes

Like many of today’s socially relevant films, “The Light Between Us” touches on many important themes. One of the most prominent of these is the issue of coming out. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Robert Pattinson discussed the theme that runs throughout the film. “I think you’re only as good as everyone allows you to be,” he said. “So I think it’s really interesting what people are going to make of this movie. It’s not that I’m questioning what they think, but it’s that I’m allowing them to think what they want.”

The actor went on to say that he believes Hollywood is at the forefront of shifting public opinion regarding the importance of being open and honest about one’s sexuality.
