While we on the one hand might think it’s sweet that actor Robert Pattinson finally decided to settle down and commit to a long-term partner, we on the other can’t help but feel a little let down. After all, we’re pretty sure he had a whole lot more swoon-worthy experiences back in the day. Like, a whole lot more.

Pattinson, who announced his engagement to screenwriter and novelist Laetitia Casta in October 2018, was already well-established as one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood when he decided to retire from the singles scene and settle down. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he came from a famous family of actors and actresses—his great-grandfather Alfred was a famous stage actor, his grandmother Vanessa once dated Mick Jagger, and his mother, Elizabeth Taylor, was the most famous person he had ever known. All of which makes it seem rather unfair that he finally decided to settle down so late in life. Especially when you consider that he had already been in a committed relationship with actress Bella Hadid for over a year before he decided to propose.

But back to our original point. While it might be great that Pattinson has finally decided to grow up and settle down, it’s a little bittersweet that it took him this long to figure it out. Because even though he’s now finally found the love of his life, it seems like he had plenty more opportunities to find it earlier. Like, a whole lot more.

More Than Meets The Eye

Sure, we know that the world is full of heartbreak. And that finding love after so long can be incredibly rewarding. But it can also be incredibly hard. Especially when you’re a celebrity, and especially if you want something more than just a casual relationship. As Casta puts it, in a Marie Claire op-ed, “People assume that being in the limelight makes it easier to find love. But the opposite is true. A lot of my friends in Hollywood can attest that it’s actually much more difficult to meet men when your whole life is on the line every day. I’ve noticed that men my age are a lot less likely to have relationships, whereas older men are constantly on the lookout for a wife.”

So it’s not like Casta or anyone else for that matter was blind to the fact that Pattinson is way more than just a gorgeous face. It’s actually a bit of a pity that he let himself get so tied up in the celebrity game, because it made it so much harder for him to realize his true potential as a person. Which is something that Casta is determined to help him realize now that his time has come. Specifically, she wants to help him find the ‘real’ version of himself, the one that hides beneath all the paparazzi and the carefully crafted image. The one that only a few people get the privilege of knowing and loving. The one that can transform anyone, even himself, into the perfect partner. Even if it takes him time to realize it.

Born To Be Wild

As much as we might want to see Pattinson settle down and start a family, we can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if he had chosen to live his life as a bachelor? What if he had listened to all his family members, and decided to follow the footsteps of his famous forebears instead of his more recent ones? What if he had decided to become an actor, and stuck with it, even after his mother’s scandalous divorce from Syrian politician Abdul Halim Omar in 1999? Or what if he had become a musician, and pursued a career in music, as many of his famous relatives have?

Pattinson was born into one of the most famous families in Hollywood. Which means that his ‘perfect match’ is already written somewhere in his DNA. Specifically, in the form of an A-list long-list of desirable women. And he has a reputation for being somewhat of a womanizer. Which might explain why it took him this long to finally figure out what he really wanted in life, and decide to settle down. Especially since he had already been in a committed relationship with actress Bella Hadid for over a year before he finally decided to pop the question.

That being said, we at least have the consolation that there’s still plenty more movie magic waiting to happen. Even if Pattinson does decide to settle down, he still has plenty of maturing to do. And who knows? Maybe one day, he’ll figure out what he’s really looking for, and we’ll get to experience all of this in a completely different light. One that doesn’t involve any paparazzi and doesn’t require him to act like a completely different person just to keep everyone happy. Although, maybe not completely happy. Because, you know, we all want what’s best for Robert Pattinson.
