While it’s been a while since we’ve had new Twilight movies, it still feels like it’s been forever. Since the start of 2019, fans have been patiently awaiting the upcoming installments of the magical vampire franchise, and now that the moment has finally arrived, we’re getting our fix of Kristen Stewart and her band of undead friends. Before the final film in the series, Twilight Saga: Eclipse, even hits theaters, let’s take a moment to reflect on what is arguably the greatest vampire film franchise of all time.
The Cinematic Universe Of Vampires
For those unfamiliar, the Twilight franchise centers around a group of vampire characters who are inspired by the creatures from Irish mythology. Over the years, these bloodthirsty movie monsters have inspired numerous other films, including the popular indie feature, It, which was released this year. If you’ve never seen it, you should definitely check it out. It’s a great adaptation of the Stephen King novella, It, and arguably one of the greatest horror films of all time. While It was based on the original Twilight novel, none of the other films are actually based on the series. Instead, each installment is its own standalone story that continues the saga of Bella and her transformation from human to vampire. In the latest film, her thirst for blood leads her to make some unfortunate decisions that ultimately have massive consequences.
Why Have There Been So Few New Twilight Movies?
From a creative standpoint, the Twilight franchise is unparalleled. The stories are dark and full of dramatic tension, the special effects are quite phenomenal, and the dialogue is witty and entertaining. However, from a business standpoint, things aren’t looking so hot. Even though Twilight was first released in 2012, and it still holds up as one of the most popular and profitable franchises of all time, the studio behind it, Summit Entertainment, filed for bankruptcy in 2018. The company’s future is uncertain, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be making any more movies in the foreseeable future. This is mainly because every time a new movie is released, it does poorly at the box office. While Twilight was a commercial and critical success, earning over $760 million worldwide and becoming one of the most iconic franchises of all time, the new installments haven’t been embraced by audiences or critics, and they’re never going to be a successful franchise. The only way they’ll make any money is if they do a complete reboot sometime in the future.
What Is The Future Of The Twilight Franchise?
With Summit entering bankruptcy proceedings, it’s hard to say what will happen to the future of the Twilight franchise. It seems that all options are on the table, including, potentially, canceling the entire series. As it stands right now, the only confirmed future of the Twilight franchise is the new untitled Twilight movie, set for release on November 20, 2019, courtesy of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It will be the final film in the franchise. Summit’s future as a movie studio isn’t looking good, and it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not the franchise will continue at all. It really is a sad day for Twilight fans, as this is undoubtedly the end of an era. While this year and next will undoubtedly be filled with anticipation and joy for Bella and her brethren, it’s important to remember that the road ahead is going to be quite the grim one.
