If 2016 was your year of losing favours, then 2017 is looking to make up for it. A new year – a new you, perhaps? – and new beginnings for all. But what does the year ahead hold for Hollywood’s A-listers? In the new year, celebs will be looking to shed off the years, add some pounds to their belts, and find a partner – or in some cases, a wives – to co-parent their kids with.
Robert Pattinson’s Year
We’ll begin in the sweet spot – our favourite celebrity couple’s second child, Lady Leshur, who was born in November 2017 and already has a dedicated Instagram page. Within days of being born, the newborn became the subject of intense media scrutiny as Robert and Emily’s marriage was plunged into crisis. The media frenzy didn’t slow down as Emily then went on to give birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter, Måns, in April 2018.
The actor was absent from the family’s side as he filmed the superhero flick, Black Panther, in Atlanta. He also took a break from the actress as she completed her own pregnancy album, which was photographed by Annie Leibovitz. What a year it’s been for Pattinson! And in true A-lister fashion, he has returned bigger and bolder than ever before.
Forbes recently released their annual list of the world’s highest-paid actors and actresses, and you’ll be surprised to learn that even Hollywood’s finest aren’t immune to the law of attraction. Pattinson made the top 10 with an estimated career earnings of $96 million (£76.8 million) in 2016. In the year that followed, he banked an additional $113-$114 million (£89.8 to £91.8 million).
However, like many A-listers, Pattinson is arguably best known for his philanthropic efforts rather than his on-screen work. In 2015, he founded the Water Project with his partner, the entrepreneur Livia Firth, which aims to tackle plastic waste by creating a reusable drinking vessel for sale around the world. The brand’s mission is to “change the way we drink, by minimising the harm that comes from single-use plastic water bottles.”
Pattinson and Firth have also been named as One of Britain’s Future World Leaders under the age of 40, in recognition of their work with Water Project and in efforts to promote gender equality.
Sandra Bullock’s Year
The year ahead will see the award-winning actress and director step into a new role: that of a mother. On 11 November 2017, Bullock and her husband, Scott, stunned the world with the announcement that they’d adopted a baby boy. The couple had originally revealed that they were in the early stages of their adoption process back in March 2017, but this is the first time they’ve revealed the gender of their son.
It’s been an emotional year for the couple, who spent time away from their newborn son, James, as he wasbaptised and grew up on the family’s farm in Georgia. But now that he’s here, they’re determined to make him a part of their daily lives. “We’ve been sitting with our baby in the mornings, holding him and feeling the strong pull of love that has developed since he arrived in our lives. He makes us want to be better parents, and we’re determined to be the best parents we can be,” Bullock said in a statement. “We have loved being parents and are looking forward to being a dad and mom again.”
Bullock and her husband are among the Hollywood richards who have had a rough year. The couple had to put their own bank accounts on hold after losing a massive $22 million (£17.2 million) in April 2017, which they then had to cover from the proceeds of her acting career. But in the year since, Bullock has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most prominent mothers, regularly attending sci-fi film expo, Comic-Con, and child cancer support group events. She’ll also be lending her support to the American Institute for Stress, as well as raising funds and awareness for organizations like the Natural History Museum (through her Bullock Nature Fund), the World Wildlife Fund, and the International Rescue Committee. It’s been a busy year for the 50-year-old actress.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Another mother-to-be whose year filled with drama is Charlize Theron. The 39-year-old South African-American actress confirmed in October 2017 that she and husband, Mad Max: Fury Road director, George Miller, were expecting their third child. Unfortunately, on 27 March 2018, Theron revealed that her pregnancy had been complicated by pre-eclampsia, a condition which affects the mother and baby’s health. As a result of the increased blood pressure, the actress had to drop out of the upcoming Ocean’s 8 and miss the film’s premiere.
Theron and Miller subsequently hired actress Emily Blunt to stand in for them at the premiere and answer questions from journalists and movie-goers about Mad Max: Fury Road. While pregnant, Theron also had to pull out of The Fate of the Furious and its accompanying premiere, and will now instead attend the film’s domestic premiere in April 2018.
Mad Max: Fury Road continues Theron’s streak of box office hits, as the post-apocalyptic action thriller has earned over $620 million (£490.8 million) worldwide. The film also became the highest-grossing Australian comedy of all time, and is the country’s third-highest grossing domestic movie ever, beaten only by the blockbusters Mad Max and The Matrix Reloaded.
Mark Wahlberg’s Year
While the majority of A-listers will be looking to the future, there are a select few who are determined to make the most of 2017. For instance, Mark Wahlberg, who has been ranked #23 on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid actors, will be looking to continue his ascent to the top. The 38-year-old’s income last year totalled $290 million (£226.9 million), with an estimated net worth of $11.2 billion (£8.7 billion).
Wahlberg has spent the past year establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most successful and prominent actors. Since appearing in the 2013 film, Grand Theft Auto V, Wahlberg has amassed a impressive filmography, appearing in blockbusters such as Patriots Day, Vice, and Triple 9. But it’s his work with Ted Melfi, the producer of the critically-acclaimed Godfather of Harlem, that stands out. The two worked together on the latter film, but the relationship goes back a lot further, with Wahlberg serving as godfather to Melfi’s infant son. When they’re not working, you can probably find Wahlberg and his wife, Adriana, 36, chilling out with their kids, Matteo and Delanie, or exploring the city they call home, Boston.
Wahlberg’s ascent to stardom and fortune comes at a time when his fellow adult actor friends are beginning to see their children walk, talk, and enjoy their company just like any other kid. Last year, the father-of-four told Harper’s Bazaar that he viewed parenting as a “spiritual rebirth.” “Now that I’m a parent, I feel like I’ve found my purpose in life,” he said. “It’s amazing how much the body remembers. We’re born to procreate, and it’s amazing that with all the technology we have today, it’s still the best way to connect with your children. I’m looking forward to being a dad and spending more time with the kids.”
Jennifer Lawrence’s Year
Speaking of finding one’s purpose in life, Jennifer Lawrence is one of the few actresses who can lay claim to leading a double life: between her glamorous on-screen persona and her more private off-screen life as a DIY craft-loving, horror movie enthusiast. The 26-year-old’s film, Red Sparrow, released in December 2017 and co-stars her sister, Francesca, with her in an adult-only fantasy world where the actresses play characters who are the complete opposite of their on-screen personas.
