It’s no secret that British actor Robert Pattinson is one of our most favorite contemporary actors. The man is a superstar — he has fans across the world and even in other galaxies. And it’s not just because of his attractive looks. It’s the charm he exudes onscreen. He has a way with a laugh, he’s humble and he’s got a heart of gold.
Most recently, Pattinson was seen sporting a stunning chocolate brown getup in the latest installment of the Twilight franchise, Eclipse. This was followed by his appearance in the upcoming comedy series The Knick, where he plays a famous doctor. He also has several movies coming up — including one with Leonardo DiCaprio that we can’t wait to see. Not bad for someone who had such a rough start in life.
The King of Crap Games
While most people were focused on the Oscars this past weekend, we were treated to one of the most memorable gaming moments of the year. After losing in the final round to Angry Birds, Hollywood action-adventure game The King of Crap was created in response. The gameplay and the wit of the game’s creators, Betsoft, were an instant Twitter sensation. They even got a shout-out from none other than Warren Buffett who said, “I love this game!”
The point of the game is to clear the screen by launching as many missiles as you can at the bad guys. But in this case, the bad guys are your friends and neighbors. The game’s satirical take on reality mixed with light-hearted gameplay made it one of the most memorable gaming experiences of the year. The King of Crap is free to play with no ads and no in-app purchases — just a quick casual game you can download and enjoy anytime.
Most Anticipated 2018 Movies
Before we dive into the most anticipated movies of the year, let’s take a quick look back at the most anticipated films of the previous year. As you might imagine, superhero-related films were incredibly popular last year with Deadpool leading the way. But even non-superhero flicks like Book of Henry and Lady and the Tramp managed to perform well thanks to dedicated fan bases. The industry is also anticipating a major comeback for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — the highly-anticipated finale to the Potter franchise. In 2018, we can look forward to sequels and prequels to numerous franchises like these. It promises to be another big year for Hollywood.
In terms of pure movie magic, we can’t forget about the incredible trailer for Gucci’s most recent film, Gatsby. The clip shows scenes of Daisy and Tom’s lavish lifestyle in the Roaring ’20s interspersed with scenes of them dancing together at a lavish costume party. Just when you think this can’t get any more beautiful, a shot of a glowing skyline is shown behind them as they dance. It’s not often you get to see such elegance on the big screen — be sure to check out Gatsby when it arrives in theaters later this year.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was a cinematic event when it was released in theaters in early 2018. The final chapter in the vampire saga saw the return of several famous faces including Robert Pattinson and Edward Cullen as vampires. Much like the previous films in the series, Eclipse is a bit of a hybrid—half vampire saga, half romantic comedy.
While the action-adventure gameplay is very similar to that of the previous Twilight films, the story in Eclipse is lighter and more romantic. If you liked the witty banter and charming protagonists of the previous films, you’ll love what Eclipse has to offer. It has everything from sparkly vampires to witty banter to make it essential viewing for Twi-hards across the globe. And we don’t just mean the humans either — Edward and his clan of Vampires are also major fans of the series. So much so that they named their cat Vampiresign. Yes, you read that right.
It was rumored during filming that Pattinson had considered not taking part in Eclipse because he didn’t want to go back to being typecast as a vampire. But director David Slade quickly put those rumors to bed when he tweeted, “Rob Pattinson will always be the king of vampires.” We can’t argue with that. (Besides, he did have a point. Vampires are pretty cool in general.)
Black Panther
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an African American protagonist in a superhero movie. So when Black Panther was initially released in theaters, it was seen as a significant moment for the film industry. And it was — audiences across the globe responded with praise and amazement. Indeed, the film earned over $1 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film in the history of cinema.
Black Panther is a fantastic movie filled with action, drama and intrigue. T’Challa, the film’s protagonist, is the king of Wakanda and the son of the late T’Chaka. Following in his father’s footsteps, T’Challa seeks to right the wrongs his people suffered under his father’s tyrannical regime. When the opportunity to prove his worthiness as king presents itself, he must put his powers of persuasion to the test and protect his country from invasion. He’s joined on his quest by fierce protectoress W’Kabi and loyalists Lekka, M’Boko and Okoye. Led by the wise strategist Ayo, the Wakandans fight a brutal war against the armies of Chad and Nigeria in order to keep their country free from harm. (Ayo’s brother, N’Jera, is also featured in the film — but he doesn’t speak any English.)
Black Panther is a story of courage, strength and perseverance. As the first feature-length film with an all-black cast ever, it proved that Hollywood really can be more inclusive when they want to be. There are also some incredible performances by the cast including Lupita Nyong’o, who was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of N’Jera. As T’Challa’s loyalist, she was arguably the standout character in the film. Lastly, the character of Shuri, who is played by Letitia Wright, is also featured on our most anticipated movie list for her own reasons. (Her performance is incredible.)
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight was Batman’s premier outing and one of the most important American superhero movies of all time. It ushered in a new era for the Dark Knight — this time as a television show — and also launched a wave of superhero movies that we’re still experiencing to this day. (Though we’re about to see the culmination of this wave in Black Panther.)
The Dark Knight is often cited as the first truly mature superhero film. It wasn’t afraid to tackle the grim subject matter of superheroes — the death of Batman’s mentor, Harvey Dent — and confrontational politics in a world dominated by corporate greed. The Dark Knight won numerous awards including an Oscar for its special effects and also a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Drama. (The fact that it was both an Oscars and Globe winner is a massive feat.)
The Dark Knight was such a watershed moment that a scene from the film is used as the cover of the final issue of DC Comics’ prestigious The Dark Knight #1—the first issue of the new Batman series. The scene shows Batman looking off into the distance as he contemplates the destruction he’s caused. The picture is taken from a famous establishing shot in The Dark Knight — the one where Harvey Dent’s thugs are shown chasing the hero. That’s when the chase scene in the film begins. Or, as a wise man once said, “History is history, and unfortunately, history often repeats itself.””
The Dark Knight broke new ground in so many ways. It’s a true milestone in cinematic history.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Speaking of groundbreaking movies, none other than George Lucas’ Star Wars saga is responsible for one of the most memorable movie scenes of all time. When the Last Jedi came out, it was an extraordinary moment for fans of the series and cinema in general. The scene in question sees Princess Leia Organa — played by Carrie Fisher — being held captive by Darth Vader. The villain pushes the handmaiden to her breaking point by refusing to let her go and questioning her loyalty to the rebellion. Then, as suddenly as he appeared, the villain turns to walk away. In one fluid motion, Fisher lunges at the villain and strangles him with her own hair.
