Pattinson already has a pretty good record as a romantic lead. He played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter film franchise and John B. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes film. Now he’s set to prove that he can be an entire hero onscreen with Twilight fans!
More details about Robert Pattinson’s upcoming movie have been revealed. The actor is in talks to star in an adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The Warner Bros. production will be directed by William McGregor from a screenplay by Joe Shrapnel. Shrapnel also wrote the Wuthering Heights film version in 2007. The film will begin production this February, so we might see Pattinson on the big screen before the end of the year!
Pattinson To Play An Unexpected Role
While it was always expected that Pattinson would play Watson, it was less clear what his actual role in the film would be. Shrapnel has written that Watson was originally meant to be an “everyman,” but the director felt that Watson’s heart was a little too in the right place for the protagonist. Even so, this year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Sherlock Holmes film series, and Watson will always be the character that fans have connected with most.
One of the biggest surprises in the Sherlock Holmes film is that Benedict Cumberbatch plays Holmes. Most people didn’t know that Cumberbatch was actually born in Birmingham, England, and that he attended Cambridge University. Besides, it is said that Sherlock Holmes was not a genius (at least, not in the traditional sense), and that he relied on his remarkable memory and observational skills to solve crimes and navigate the strange world of London at the turn of the 20th century.
In an interview, Shrapnel spoke about how his screenplay adapted Watson’s story without changing too much. “There are some scenes that are exactly as I had written them originally, but there are also scenes where I think Billy [McGregor] has taken a bit of a chance and gone against my original idea. So sometimes it’s funny, other times it’s nice. But it’s a learning process making a film of this size.”
As for Robert Pattinson, his role is described as “a tortured hero.” Of course, the press still wants to compare him to Sherlock Holmes, but this time it will be a little more difficult. Pattinson will have a lot more hair than Holmes, and it’s fair to say that the famous detective walked and talked a lot more than the average person. That being said, Pattinson has proven himself time and time again that he can play complicated characters with great depth and sensitivity. Fans of both Holmes and the Twilight series would have a lot to look forward to.
Wuthering Heights To Be A Period Piece
Though Wuthering Heights is considered a modern-day classic and was first published in 1847, the story still resonates with readers more than 130 years later. The complex plot deals with the struggle between the aristocrats Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and their relationship with the equally complicated and troubled Edgar Linton. Heathcliff and Catherine’s struggle to be accepted by the gentry is a theme that runs through literature, especially in Britain, and is a microcosm for class conflict in late-19th century England. Wuthering Heights is also often cited as a major inspiration for Emily Dickenson’s 1875 novel, Emily. The book was made into a miniseries in 2010 that starred Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana. Though the story is set in the late 1800s, the first season of the series was almost entirely constructed using miniatures and computer-generated imagery.
The film adaptation of Wuthering Heights will again bring a timeless story to life. The director of the film, William McGregor, has acknowledged the rich legacy of the book and has cited it as one of his favorite scripts. He is also a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, and the similarities in the stories could not be more apparent. Though he hasn’t said much about the project, McGregor has teased that he will use a mixture of live-action photography and visual effects to bring the characters and setting of Wuthering Heights to life onscreen. We will have to wait and see.
What is known about the film is that it will star Eric Bana and Saoirse Ronan. Ronan is best known for her role in the Irish film, The Ghost Writer, while Bana is most recently seen in the WWII drama, Hyde Park on Hudson. Additionally, Bana recently wrapped production on the indie film, The Personal History of David Linington, in which he plays the title character. It is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018.
Sherlock Holmes’ Home At 221B Baker Street
When it comes to Sherlock Holmes, there are a lot of questions that fans want answered. One of the most intriguing is, “Where does Sherlock Holmes live?,” or, more specifically, “What is the address of 221B Baker Street?.” This is a tough question to answer because Conan Doyle never revealed the exact location of 221B Baker Street, or at least, he never mentioned it in the stories. However, in A Study In Scarlet, Arthur Conan Doyle did give us a pretty good idea of what kind of place it might look like.
The scene that best describes Sherlock Holmes’ home is set in the very first story, “A Study In Scarlet.” It is a beautiful spring day, and Doctor Watson has just returned from walking the dog. The pair are sitting in the garden of 221B Baker Street as a maid brings them some tea. As they drink, Watson notices a crow on the roof and asks Holmes if he thinks it’s an omen. The detective takes a minute to sip his tea before responding, “I’ve often thought that crows are omens. Did you notice the little smile on their beaks as they peck at your toes? They are probably trying to tell you to look out for cobras.”
For decades, fans of Sherlock Holmes have made pilgrimages to 221B Baker Street in hopes of unraveling the great detective’s secret. In 2015, Warner Bros. approved a detailed plan for a Sherlock Holmes movie to be filmed at the famous location. The plan was for the production to start in late 2016 and wrap in October of that year. The film will be directed by English actor, Billy McGregor, and produced by Rebecca Thomas. It is unclear at this time whether or not McGregors’s presence will impact the stories that Doyle published about Sherlock Holmes or whether these will serve as the basis for the character’s adventures in the future. However, one thing is for sure: fans of Sherlock Holmes will have a convenient landmark to help them find the address they’re looking for.
Rebecca’s Take
With the upcoming movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights, Pattinson will once again prove that he is more than capable of playing larger than life characters with depth and sensitivity. Fans of both Sherlock Holmes and Twilight are sure to enjoy what he has to offer.
