2017 was a breakout year for Robert Pattinson. While fans of the Twilight Saga may still be talking about the disappointment of 2016, the year was marked by a turn-away from that franchise and to more personal projects. In 2017, we saw Pattinson shed off the Edwardian trappings of his early work, appearing in a series of critically-acclaimed films that showcased not only his acting chops, but also the strength of his direction and story-telling.

Here’s a look back at the best of Pattinson’s movies of 2017, from the highs to the lows.

Highlights

Pattinson kicked off 2017 confidently, appearing in four acclaimed films that were critical and commercial successes. Pattinson played three distinct characters in 2017, but each one was masterful in their own right. The critically-acclaimed Maps to the Stars was a romantic comedy set in 1970s London; it co-starred Ben Whishaw and featured cameos from many high-profile English actors and actresses. Maps to the Stars became one of the top-grossing films of 2017 and was nominated for numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The biggest hit of the year, though, was the action-adventure Pattinson produced and appeared in, Outer Banks. In this adventure film, Pattinson plays an American college professor who, along with his Japanese wife (Emi Wada), ventures abroad to save his daughter (Harriet Dyer) from school bullies. The film was widely acclaimed for its action scenes and authentic Japanese culture. Outer Banks was released in the United States in February and became one of the top-grossing films of all time, taking in $45 million at the box office.

In August, it was announced that Pattinson would be the new face of Burberry’s fragrance, Brit Women, which launched in February 2017. The fragrance is described as “a celebration of women and their incredible strength through sport,” and to mark the occasion, Burberry and Pattinson will be collaborating on a special fragrance that will be available to buy in select markets. The actor will also be featured in Burberry’s #MyOdeToFrangranceYouTube campaign this year.

Lows

While 2017 was a very successful year for Pattinson’s acting career, the actor and producer faced a rough patch in early 2018. In January, it was announced that Pattinson would be taking a break from acting while he worked on “new projects.” In the months that followed, it was apparent that the actor had slowed down his activity and only made a handful of appearances in films and on red carpets. In March, it was announced that Pattinson would not be renewing his contract with London-based production company, Hello Films. The company’s co-founder, Giles Martin, blamed the actor’s low-key 2018 on “his health and his family.” Despite these setbacks, Pattinson remained committed to his acting career and in April was back on set with Emi Wada on the island of Bali, where they were shooting the romantic comedy, The Wedding. In June, it was announced that the film would miss its original November 2018 release date and would be pushed back to February 2019.

In August, it was announced that Pattinson and Wada would be parting ways after four years of marriage. The couple have a child, named Bingham, born in 2015. Though their divorce was finalized in October, the split was made public in August. Since their divorce, Wada has continued to pursue a successful acting career and is now playing the lead in the BBC series, Death in Paradise. After starring in nine films across two continents, it was apparent that the 48-year-old actor needed a break. Wada will appear in Death in Paradise for the rest of its five-episode season in 2018.

Overall

Overall, 2017 was a good year for Pattinson. While it was not necessarily a commercial success, he appeared in some of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, cementing his place as one of Britain’s leading actors. Now that the dust has settled, audiences can look back on 2017 and appreciate the actor’s work. Perhaps more impressively, the year marked a complete departure from the Edwardian world of his early work, showcasing a maturity beyond his years. With 2018 already promising to be an even bigger year for Pattinson, what will 2019 bring? Stay tuned.
