It was only a matter of time before a member of the public rose up and asked Ellen DeGeneres a question about her love life. During the show’s first-ever live audience session at Warner Center in Los Angeles, a fan called out, “Hey Ellen, can we talk about your new boyfriend, Robert Pattinson?” To which the comedienne-turned-talk-show-host-turned-fashion-entrepreneur replied, “Um, sure.”
She then proceeded to drop all the necessary Robert Pattinson talk, from his tattoos and his band, the Twilight cast and their influence in pop culture, to the irony of dating a member of the British Royal Family. She even admitted that she still has a crush on the actor and singer, despite their seven-year age difference.
Here, we’re presenting the whole fascinating Q&A—unedited—in the form in which you might have seen it.
Q: How did you first meet Robert Pattinson?
A: I first met Robert when we were doing The Price Is Right—we were doing a commercial for Revlon cosmetics, and I had to say the random word “beautiful.” We did the take, and he said that’s not what he meant. So I went back and said it again, and he looked at me and said, “No, I mean ‘beautiful’ as in ‘pretty’ or ‘attractive.’ ”
It was a very awkward silence, but we worked it out and became friends.
Q: What’s the most memorable thing that happened between you and Robert?
A: One of the most memorable things that happened was when I went to his house in England to visit his music studio. I went up to his room, and it was filled with all of these guitars—he has a very large collection. And then we went downstairs and saw his dog, Rex, who was asleep in front of the television. So we knelt down and petted him, and he opened his eyes and just stared at us.
It was a very sweet moment. It’s one of those things where you feel like you’ve known him forever, even though it’s only been seven years.
Q: What’s changed about Robert since the first time you met him?
A: He’s gotten so much better-looking! I want to say that he’s gotten more beautiful, in a way. When we were first introduced, I didn’t really see it, but now that I’m a bit older and wiser, I see how handsome he is. And also, he’s so much more comfortable in his own skin. He used to be very insecure about his body, and now that he has confidence, he really shows off his gorgeousness.
When we were first introduced, he was very shy, almost to the point of being aloof. Now that we’re friends, I can say that his shyness is something that he struggles with, but it’s something that makes him so lovable. It’s like, there’s this layer of armor that he puts up that keeps everyone at a comfortable distance. But underneath that armor, he’s still the same guy that you know from the old days.
Q: How would you describe your relationship with Robert?
A: I would describe our relationship as “enchanting.” There is this incredible connection between us that even feels like it goes beyond just friendship. It’s like we’ve known each other forever and are just realizing it now. We are constantly thinking of each other and missing each other during the day. It’s like we’re doing this dance that’s making us both feel better.
Q: What would you say is the most important thing in your relationship?
A: The most important thing in our relationship is that we both honor and respect each other’s space. We have such a good time together, and sometimes it’s hard to keep things professional, but that’s what’s most important to me—that we keep things separate. We each have our own work lives and our own friends, and we make sure that our relationship doesn’t affect that.
Q: Are you still in love with Robert?
A: Yes, I’m still in love with him. It’s been almost ten years since we’ve seen each other, and even though the years have gone by, it still doesn’t feel like enough. It’s like we’re in a honeymoon phase and can’t seem to get enough of each other. Even now, as I’m talking to you, I can’t stop thinking about him. Just the sound of his voice makes me happy—it brings me back to the wonderful time we had together.
It’s been an incredible journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. We’ve been through so much together, and I feel so lucky to have had this experience.
What’s great is that even though we’re older, in many ways, our friendship has only gotten better. We now have this deeper connection, and it feels like we’ve known each other for even longer. We’ve been through so much, and though it’s been a while, it still feels like yesterday.
It’s been incredible to watch him grow up and become the confident man that he is now. In 2007, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Since then, he’s taken on more roles, including playing the lead in the Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He’s released two solo albums, Out of Our Minds and Just Like That, and is currently promoting his third album, Good Thinking.
