Welcome to your MTV Music Awards overview of events, red carpet appearances, and backstage interviews from this year’s show. From Ed Sheeran’s touching speech to Kendrick Lamar’s monumental performance, this is the ultimate guide to the biggest moments from the 2018 show.

Best Hip-Hop Artist

The year 2018 was a big one for hip-hop. Not only did Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. feat. Rihanna win the award for best rap album, but also many hip-hop artists had a significant impact on the music industry, breaking big and sending shockwaves through the community. While some may still believe that the year of hip-hop was 2016 with the debut of the highly anticipated album, The Black Panther, the truth is that 2018 was the year of the underdog. Artists like Lil Nas X, Cardi B, and Chance the Rapper broke big, and in turn, changed the game.

Although Hip-Hop will continue to be a prominent force in the industry for years to come, for the first time since the year 2000, the genre may no longer be the dominant force on the music scene. Still, it was an incredible year for the music industry, and this year’s MTV Music Awards are a testament to that. Here’s a glimpse at some of the biggest moments and celebs from this year’s event.

Best Dance Album

It’s now been eight years since we’ve seen a Drake album, and fans have been patiently waiting for new music ever since. The highly anticipated VIEWS album was released on April 19 and is available to buy now. The album is described as a culmination of everything Drake has done up until this point in his career, featuring songs inspired by and including some of his previous hits, as well as some new, previously unreleased material. His eighth studio album features guest appearances from some of the biggest artists out there including Alessi Alexia, J. Balvin, Nicki Minaj, and more.

Drake went through a lot during the eight years between Views and now. Not only did he gradually reduce the guest collaborations on his albums, but he also released a studio album eight years ago, leading many to believe that this was a significant drop-off in creative ability. However, after Views, it is clear that Drake is still very much a relevant artist.

The album itself is another major step forward for Drake. While it’s not exactly a breakthrough, it is a much more personal and introspective album. Gone are the career-focused songs we’ve come to expect from the rapper. Instead, Drake focuses on issues close to home, like his father’s health, infidelity, and his conflicted feelings towards the city of Los Angeles.

Many of the album’s tracks, like “In My Feelings” and “Madonna,” were already part of Drake’s repertoire, proving that the album is most definitely a collector’s item. It will be exciting to see what 2019 has in store for Drake. He has a chance to prove that he’s more than capable of continuing to grow and evolve as an artist. What do you think will be the next big music event for Drake in 2019 or in the near future?

Best R&B/Soul Artist

The year 2018 was another big one for R&B and soul music. Back in August, the legendary Michael Jackson passed away, which sent shockwaves through the music community, as well as the entire world. In remembrance of his legacy, many performers took the stage and paid homage to the King of Pop on the one-year anniversary of his death. As the saying goes, “music is worldwide, and we are a world apart.””

It is now 2019, and while many may have forgotten, the world still hasn’t. Artists like Solange Knowles, Brandy, and Jazmine Sullivan kept the Michael Jackson celebration alive by paying tribute to the King of Pop on stage at the BET Awards, the BBMAs, and more. It was an incredible year for R&B and soul music, and it is a pity that these artists are not grateful for what they were given. However, none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for artists like Beyoncé and her formidable team, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the world’s largest MJ tribute was perfect.

Best Live Performance

In May, one of the biggest events of the year took place in Madrid, Spain. Beyoncé delivered a stunning performance at the Puerto Madrid Festival (Puerto Madrid Festival) where she shared a bond with the Madrid audience, bringing them together for a sisterly giggle and a slightly tongue-in-cheek reminder of their shared love for R&B and soul music. Her performance was one of the most watched of the year (and probably the entire festival), staggering viewers and musicians across the world.
