So she enlists the help of her friend Fran (played by Monica Belfort). Together, they navigate the complexities of dating and navigate their way through college life. This is a romantic comedy for those who want a romantic comedy.

4. The Big Sick

Speaking of romantic comedy, we have The Big Sick. This is a real treat for anyone who loves comedy. Based on the true story of Kumail Nanjiani’s (who plays the role of the husband in the film) battle with post-pregnancy depression, this movie focuses on the difficulties of being a husband and father. It also focuses on the support that his wife (played by Zoe Kazan) and his family provide for him as he works through his problems. This is a full-length romantic comedy that will make you laugh and probably cry. (4)

5. Lady Bird

One of the best films of the year (and one of the most-talked about movies this year) is Lady Bird. This 2019 coming-of-age story focuses on a teenage girl named Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan). She’s determined to become an actress, so she moves to New York City to try and make it in the entertainment industry. While there, she internships at a publishing house and develops a close bond with the chief editor of the house (played by Tracy Letts). But the publication isn’t prepared to commit to a promising young author, and so it shuts down her internship. Lady Bird struggles to find her place in the city and is determined not to let anyone or anything stand in the way of her goals. This is a coming-of-age story about a young woman obsessed with acting and determined to make it in the industry. (5)

Speaking of determined women, we have What Now?, a 2018 drama that stars Jennifer Lopez. This story focuses on a young woman named Lena (played by Lopez), who leaves her family in the Dominican Republic to live in New York City. She starts a new life, works multiple jobs, and eventually becomes a successful real-estate agent. (6)

7. Knives Out

Another amazing movie from 2018 is Knives Out. This is a thriller that follows multiple characters and multiple plotlines. If you or your friends are fans of the Mummy trilogy, then you’ll want to watch Downsizing. This next installment stars Matt Damon and sees him playing a character named Alik. The group kidnaps Alik and his wife (Elsa Patience Thorne) and take them to a remote island, where they intend to keep them prisoner until the world gets the message. (9)

And finally, we have Marriage Story. This 2019 film by writer-director Noah Baumbach was selected by Netflix as one of the top 10 original films of the year. The story focuses on a marriage between a middle-aged woman named Celia (played by Anna Maxwell Martin) and a man named Enzo (played by Armie Hammer). While it’s not entirely romantic, we find out more about their relationship and the difficulties that they face over the course of the year. Marriage Story explores the modern-day issue of marriage and coupledom, depicting the strains that relationships can have on individuals and on society as a whole. (10)
