While we have all been obsessed with the Twilight saga since it was first published in 2005, it has truly felt like an international meme to many of its fans. I have to admit, after spending hundreds of hours reading all seven books in the Twilight saga, I’m definitely beyond excited for this release. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
The final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga takes the form of a three-part epic, which is broken down into two separate movies. The first of these movies is entitled, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. I have to admit that I’m a little torn on whether I should see this movie in theaters or purchase it on DVD. Seeing as how this is the last part of the Twilight saga and I’ve read all seven of the books, I think it’s fair to say that I’ve heard enough about the subject matter to decide whether or not I should see the movie. The good news is that I have a feeling the movie will be great and will keep the saga’s fans satisfied. The bad news is that the wait for this movie has almost been five years, and that’s a lot of time to wait. I wish the directors all the best, but I can’t help but wonder if they could’ve done something different with this last shot in the twilight saga. I’m sure a lot of thought went into it, but sometimes I feel like they could’ve used other forms of media to tell the story. That wasn’t a knock on the movie, it was a plea to the filmmakers.
Then there’s Part 2 of the Twilight Saga: The Wedding, Part 2. This is the second and final part of the Twilight Saga, and it’s also the part that a lot of fans have been looking forward to the most. This is because it’s the part that finds Bella and Edward’s wedding to be one of the most memorable and emotional events in the entire saga. Unfortunately, this is also the part where the creative team behind The Twilight Saga has decided to give us the middle chapter, which I’m pretty sure a lot of fans consider to be one of the weakest in the entire series. And trust me, I feel the same way. I hate to see fans disappointed, especially after they’ve been so loyal to the series. I’m sure a lot of thought went into this, but sometimes I feel like it was a case of the creative team pleasing themselves more than they pleased the fans. This is the kind of thing that happens when you put so much pressure on yourself and your collaborators to deliver the “perfect novel” that it destroys what was originally created. I don’t want to be negative, because I know that a lot of thought went into this, but sometimes I feel like it could’ve used more originality.
What Is a Meme?
If you’re not familiar, a meme is defined as “any idea, concept, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a cultural community, either intentionally or unintentionally.” And if you’re wondering, memes are often referred to as culture jammers because of their ability to infect and take over any given culture. This is why Stephenie Meyer wasn’t technically wrong when she said “These novels are just as relevant today as they were in 1935” – because they continue to replicate and influence culture to this day.
In the case of The Twilight Saga, this cultural infection is probably the most significant and far-reaching of any literary series in history. Since the inception of the meme, Twilight fans have tirelessly fought for acceptance in a world that often doesn’t want to admit that it loves vampires and werewolves. And it’s not as if this is a new phenomenon. In 2014, the same phenomenon affected the Harry Potter series, which had also gone mainstream years earlier.
Is The Twilight Meme Over?
It’s easy to say that the Twilight meme has reached its expiration date, but I think this is a little bit too soon to say. While it’s true that the books have lost some of their luster and aren’t as interesting or relevant today as they were in their original form, I don’t think this is all because the books have been over-explored by mainstream culture. Instead, I think the books have lost some of their charm because they’ve been around for so long. This is probably the biggest problem with aging memes – their sheer durability. While it’s quite amazing that these books remain popular over 80 years later, it’s also quite frustrating that this is all they’ve ever done. It would be like if Rocky, one of the most popular sports movies of all time, decided to pack it in and retire. But instead of Rocky being retired, he decided to become a politician and run for president. And not just any politician, but a former professional boxer. Because, you know, it’s always the guys who’ve been there and done that who generally end up achieving the most. It’s quite sad when a once-famous fictional character decides to throw their hat in the ring for real.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that every other literary character or storyline is now completely uninteresting, it just means that the Twilight Saga has run its course. It’s been the most significant and influential series of memes ever created, and it’s continued popularity shows just how much cultural impact it’s had and continues to have. But with every other literary character and storyline having cashed in on this trend at some point, it’s clear that this is no longer an exclusive club belonging solely to Bella and Edward.
Why Do You Want to See the Twilight Saga Again?
I already mentioned that I’m excited about the upcoming release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. But I think there’s another aspect to this excitement that fans should be talking about – the fact that the saga is coming back. After five (yes, five) amazing years, Stephenie Meyer has finally decided to give us our next installment in the saga. While there are signs that this may not be the last installment, they certainly aren’t encouraging.
Over the years, the creative team behind the Twilight series has developed a strong habit of canceling and delaying the series’ installments. This is quite typical of a publishing house that has to consider profits before anything else. But in all honesty, this doesn’t change the fact that we’re still talking about an eight-year wait for the third and final part of the Twilight Saga. And if you think that’s not long, consider this: It’s been over 80 years since the first part of the Twilight Saga was published, and it still has fans. So while it’s amazing that this much time has passed and that this franchise has seen such incredible success, it’s quite frustrating that we have to wait so long for the next installment. It would be like if Rocky decided to become a musician and asked his fans to patiently wait for his next album. They might call him a genius and a cultural icon, but they might also just find him to be kind of annoying.
It would be great if there were more literary characters and sagas like the Twilight one floating around out there. But considering all the pressures involved in creating a novel that stands the test of time, I think we can all agree that it would be best if more literary characters stayed in obscurity, where they belong.
