They had love at first sight, falling head over heels for each other. Then, the unthinkable happened – Rob, at the height of his fame, had to drop a bombshell on his fans. After eight years of dating, he proposed to his high school sweetheart, Kristen. Despite the media frenzy that ensued, their marriage remains strong. Here, we take an inside look at their devoted relationship.

Starting Over From Scratch

Despite having one of the most recognizable faces in the world, Rob Pattinson’s transition to the big stage was anything but seamless. The English actor had to start from the ground up, breaking into the acting scene at the age of 27. After small roles in student films, he finally landed a leading man role in the 2008 independent romantic comedy, Never Back Down, followed by his breakout performance in 2010’s The Rover. The rest, as they say, is history.

Rob’s Hollywood career quickly took off, with leading roles in iconic films like the Twilight Saga, Gangster Squad, and now, The Lost Words. He has also continued to star in critically acclaimed indie films, like 2016’s Beautiful People, in which he played Kate Winslet’s son. While he has always been committed to independent films, he has never truly been able to shake off the Hollywood spotlight.

Rob’s successful acting career undoubtedly played a role in keeping him tied to Kristen. After all, who wouldn’t want to be married to a famous actor? They were already planning to grow old together and enjoy life in luxury. But even those closest to the couple had no idea how serious their relationship was – until Rob dropped a bombshell.

The Last Movie

It was at the height of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 when Rob finally made it official – he was engaged to be married to his high school sweetheart. The pair had been dating for seven years, keeping their relationship a secret from the public. They even went so far as to get matching tattoos dedicated to their love – a rose for Rob and a sun for Kristen – before walking down the aisle.

Fans were caught by surprise. While some were thrilled to hear the news, others wondered why they hadn’t heard about the engagement beforehand. The answer is that as exciting as their love story is, it’s also rather messy. In 2013, Rob was wrapping up filming on the final season of his hit TV series, Breaking Bad, when his agent called to inform him that his bosses at Netflix wanted to know if he was available to film a movie immediately.

The next day, the actor found out he had been cast in the upcoming film adaptation of Young Widow, a popular young adult novel by Kiersten White. Based on the novel’s trailer, it appears he would be playing the part of Jack, a college dropout who comes out of retirement to help his former professor, played by Anne Heche, solve a series of murders. It’s the perfect role for Rob, as it helps his character learn to value the opinions of others and consider all options before acting.

Although he knew it would be a while before he could settle down with Kristen, he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with such an iconic actress. In fact, he had already agreed to do the movie, independently of the Netflix call, with a low-budget production company. What’s more, he had a feeling that this would be the movie that would finally put his career on the map.

An Unusual Proposal

The engagement made international headlines, with the Daily Mail dubbing it “the wedding of the decade.” The couple decided to forgo a traditional church ceremony in favor of an intimate celebration with friends and family. The day was filled with laughter as Kristen’s parents shared funny anecdotes about their marriage.

The guest list for the wedding was a who’s who of Hollywood royalty, including Elle MacLeman, Benicio del Toro, and Diane Keaton. The newlywed couple enjoyed an adventurous honeymoon, traveling to Italy, France, and Morocco. They took their time getting to grips with being newlyweds, spending the first few months of their life together quietly. They wanted to make sure they had time to get to know each other as individuals before rushing into a new chapter of their lives.

Then, in early 2016, the couple announced they were expecting their first child. The actress, who was four months pregnant at the time, used the occasion to publicly break the news that she and Rob were engaged. Fans of the couple couldn’t contain their excitement, with many rushing to buy babymoon packages, host baby showers, and design a gender-neutral naming ceremony. The couple’s daughter, Iris, was born in August 2016, weighing in at a healthy eight pounds, ten ounces.

Steady On The Ground Hog Day

While the media had a field day – both old and new, the couple kept relatively low-profile, rarely appearing alongside each other, until Iris’s birth. Since then, they have been busy parenting and adjusting to life as a family of three.

The Lost Words, their adaptation of Edith Wharton’s 1907 novel, is set for release in late February. It continues the trend of strong female characters led by strong women, following in the footsteps of The Woman in White, The House of Gucci, and the upcoming The Nightingale. While Wharton’s rich and lively narrative proved to be an unlikely bestseller when it was first published in 1907, the story of an heiress who becomes a journalist, hoping to fight injustice, will resonate with readers today.

The duo’s other upcoming projects include the female-led Ocean’s Eight and the action-adventure, The King.

Despite the ups and downs of their relationship, Rob and Kristen have always remained dedicated to each other. The pair continues to work together, with Rob appearing alongside Bella in the upcoming Twilight Saga novel, Eclipse, due for release in April. Their success as a screenwriter and actor has undoubtedly helped their marriage, proving that opposites can indeed attract.
