Robert Pattinson is one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, with a closet full of designer garments and a smile that could convince a girl to do anything.
The English actor’s career has blossomed since he made his acting debut in the 2013 film “Cosmopolis.” Since then he’s appeared in hit series including “The L Word” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and has headlined several major films including “Beauty and the Beast.”
The 25-year-old hunk has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand leading men and is known for his charming, boyish demeanor and saucy tongue. He is also an accomplished songwriter whose credits include “Applause” by Lady Gaga and “Walking on Sunset” by Kacey Musgraves.
So it was inevitable that Hollywood would come knocking on his door to ask for permission to put his charming mug on screen once more.
Pattinson’s camp has already struck a deal with Netflix for a new installment of the popular “Dynasty” series, and he’s lined up several projects including an adaptation of Stephen King’s It with Joel Edgerton, a starring role in the crime thriller Cold Blooded, and a return to television in the comedy series The Prince and the Pauper. He also has a small role in Quentin Tarantulin’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as film director Chuck Berry.
Why ‘Walking on Sunset’?
Pattinson is best known for his songwriting, but he’s also a talented musician who plays both the guitar and the drums. One of the songs he’s written is “Walking on Sunset,” a song that was inspired by one of his favorite films, the 1967 comedy “A Hard Day’s Night.”
The film follows a group of musicians as they head out for the evening to record some music. While strolling along a Los Angeles street, the quintet stops to take in the view from a nearby rooftop. As they turn to go back down the stairs, they sing a happy birthday to Paul McCartney, who turns 60 that day.
McCartney’s character is greeted by the group and they serenade him with “Walking on Sunset” before he invites them to lunch the next day.
McCartney was reportedly so moved by the song that he used it as the inspiration for his 2009 memoir, “Walking With My Friends.” In the book he describes how he felt “proud and honored” to be serenaded by a group of talented young people.
Bringing It All Back Home
One of the films that has been attracting a great deal of attention lately is Woody Allen’s romantic comedy “A Late Lunch.”
The movie stars an incredible ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Kenan Thompson, Alec Baldwin, Brian d’Arpino, Louis C.K., and Miranda Hart. It’s the story of a successful New York businesswoman who heads out west for a relationship retreat with her girlfriends. While there she gets roped into helping to raise money for a charity by singing jokes off-key at comedy clubs. She has to fight for her life and the life of her child in the end.
The film has been nominated for several awards including the Golden Globe, which it won for Best Musical or Comedy. The cast delivered some memorable performances and the songs were charming. And, as we mentioned, A Late Lunch is filled with comedians who are all about one thing: making you laugh.
Pattinson was a bit player in the film, but he made a lasting impression with his portrayal of Keith Jarrett, the brilliant pianist and bandleader who founded the Bob Dylan band.
Getting ‘Dymally’ With Lady Gaga
Pattinson’s songwriting talent was also on display in the 2015 film “Cats,” which he wrote and starred in. It’s the story of Meek Mill, whom Pattinson described as a “genius and a great friend” in an interview with GQ. The movie is filled with great music and a number of noteworthy cameos. Some of the stars of “Cats” were also in Allen’s “A Late Lunch.”
The music-filled movie also marks the debut of Lady Gaga, who has built an incredible platform for herself as a recording artist, producer, and fashion designer. She has released four studio albums, including 2015’s “Joanne,” which produced the Top 10 single “Diamonds.”
Gaga’s music and fashion styles have transcended traditional boundaries. People are talking about her fashion style now more than ever before. She launched #LADYCATSSURGE, a collection of unique items available only during the movie’s limited theater run, which sold out immediately.
The King of Suburbia
Pattinson is also known for starring in the 2014 romantic comedy “Cosmopolis.” He plays Robert, a successful lawyer who finds himself in an uncomfortable situation when the President of the United States (Steve Buscemi) invites him to the White House for dinner. While there, the two men become fast friends. In “Cosmopolis,” it’s a sunny California daydream played out against the backdrop of a global financial crisis. The ensemble cast included Jennifer Lopez, Robert DeNiro, Alec Baldwin, and George Clooney.
The movie was another critical and commercial hit, earning a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $50 million worldwide. The premise for the film was an idea from Clooney. He approached DeNiro about adapting a Donald Barthelme short story about two friends who go on a golf vacation and get sucked into a worlds of commerce and greed. The director said that he wanted to show how power can corrupt friendship and posited that the current state of affairs in America is partly due to the widening of the social gap between the rich and the rest.
The financial success of Cosmopolis has enabled Clooney to continue his prolific film career, which also includes the upcoming thriller “The Perfect Wife.” The director has said that he likes to keep his films light and fun but also believes that “it’s important to stay true to yourself.”
Meanwhile, Pattinson’s next film, the crime thriller “Cold Blooded,” stars Mahershala Ali, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Carmen Ejogo. It’s a story about a husband (Ali) who is determined to prove his wife’s (DeWitt) innocence after she is accused of murdering their children’s father. The film is set for release in October 2019.
The King of the Sunset Strip
Pattinson’s portrayal of pianist Keith Jarrett in A Late Lunch is one of the actor’s best known roles. He has since gone on to star in several more films, including the upcoming musical film “Only the Strong.”
The movie is the story of an aspiring singer (Maika Monroe) who takes a job as a waitress at a strip club in order to fund her music career. After she delivers a memorable performance, Sissy Spacek (Carrie Fisher’s mom) asks her to become a member of her troupe, the Grand Tour. The group of dancers and musicians then head out on the road, performing shows in themed venues around the country. In a way, it’s a fantasy-come-true for the young singer, who dreams of traveling the country and performing on stage. The only catch is that she has to share the spotlight with a rotating group of amazing women.
Sissy Spacek co-founded the company Spacek Entertainment, which is responsible for the Grand Tour series and several other award-winning films. Spacek saw “Only the Strong” and decided to put her money where her mouth is. The company’s next movie, also starring Pattinson, is slated for release in January 2021.
