After a seven-year absence, Robert Pattinson is back, and this time he’s brought along his beloved childhood sweetheart, Zoe Kravitz. The couple was first seen together in 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and have since been inseparable.

They were on hand as Twilight star Bella Swan and Breaking Dawn director Bill Condon celebrated their love at the 74th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday evening, where they were both nominated for an award. If they win, it will mark the first time a couple has shared a golden statue in film history.

Here we’re taking a look back at the couple’s previous roles and what they’ve been up to since their last movie together, 2013’s The Tourist. We’ll also explore whether or not they’re still committed to each other, as well as what we know about their future projects.

Let’s begin with a brief overview of their previous roles. As Bella Swan’s beau, Robert is best known for his performance in the Twilight franchise. He originally debuted in 2008’s Twilight and went on to appear in the three subsequent films in the massively popular series. While the actor’s career has taken him around the world, his heart seems to still be in Canada where he was born (hence his nickname “Canadah”).

In 2012, he stepped away from the big screen to attend to family matters. He wed Kravitz in a secret wedding ceremony in Venice back in 2010, and the couple’s first child, a son named Louis, was born a few months later. The two have been inseparable ever since. In 2018, they even managed to sneak a kiss in at the end of Bill Condon’s Les Misérables, which also stars Robert’s Twilight co-star, Lily Collins.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

When it comes to the Twilight franchise, it’s important to note that while Robert initially played a pivotal role in the series, he didn’t act in every installment. In fact, he only appeared in the first three films, which were all directed by Bill Condon. In the years since, the filmmaker has become an essential part of the series, serving as both producer and designer on all four episodes of the current Twilight Saga, which is now in its eighth season.

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 sees Robert reunite with Collins and join forces with Kravitz, who plays his on-screen wife, human vampire princess Annette Bening. The film follows the couple as they navigate the trials and tribulations of married life. In it, we learn about their struggles to fit into each other’s lives as well as the world around them, which is governed by a ruthless Vampire Council. It’s essentially the story of a traditional white wedding, set in a world where vampires are treated as something other than frightening monsters.

Condon spoke to Entertainment Tonight about how he drew on his own wedding experience to create the interiors for the film. “We wanted to have a feeling of warmth and nostalgia for the older generation to come back to while feeling like a luxury hotel in New York City,” he explained. “So we wanted to use a lot of velvet and lots of marble.” The filmmaker also discussed the challenges of adapting the Twilight universe into a modern setting. “The hardest thing was taking [the books] out of their universe and putting them into the real world,” he noted. “It can be so easy to get lost in details when you’re creating an imaginary world, but you have to keep the spirit of the story alive.”

While the majority of the movie takes place in Annette’s lavish apartment, which is decked out with beautiful marble and velvet, Condon wanted the feel of a classic Hollywood movie set. Hence the inclusion of cameras, lights, and an editor, who, in true Hollywood tradition, help to create the illusion of a movie set.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 marks the third and final installment in the Twilight series. It was released on January 20, 2013, and, as the name would suggest, it deals with the aftermath of Bella’s pregnancy. Though she gives birth in the film, her son, Tristan (Gabriel Knight), doesn’t make an appearance.

The series concludes with an ambiguous ending that sees Bella, who has been absent from the narrative since Breaking Dawn – Part 1, leave for San Francisco and start a new life with Edward, whom she sacrifices her life for in the process of saving himself from werewolf attacks. It’s likely that she will soon discover that she is part vampire and may have to decide between living a life as a monster or a normal human being.

Since Breaking Dawn…

Despite the ambiguous ending of Bella’s story, the Twilight franchise isn’t over yet. In fact, it’s been expanding ever since its first installment hit theaters. In 2014, Summit Entertainment, producer of the Twilight series, launched a full vampire universe with the release of The Viking Saga, which tells the story of three vikings who go on a killing spree, seeking out their opponents’ blood, while the rest of the world sits back and watches in horror. The release was followed by Flaming Sun in 2015 and The Grimm Tale in 2016.

The success of the Twilight series led to multiple spin-offs. In 2017, a companion novel to Breaking Dawn – Part 1, titled Cursed, was published, as well as a graphic novel titled Twilight: The Graphic Novel. Then, last year, Summit released Not From This World, a prequel novel that reveals Bella’s story before she even meets Edward. Finally, this year, we got the second installment of the Twilight Saga, titled Eclipse. Though the book wasn’t released to coincide with the film’s premiere, we do get a glimpse of its central character, Edward Cullen, who is played by Charlie Hungan, in a scene that takes place between pages 18 and 19.

As for Robert and Zoe, they haven’t been shy about showing off their newfound bondage during their coaching sessions. The couple has been posting videos of themselves practicing yoga and stepping dance lessons on their Instagram stories. In one photo, we see Robert behind Zoe as she lies on a mat, seemingly naked except for a yoga mat, while he laughs. In another, he is bending Zoe, with her eyes closed, in a yoga pose. In yet another, they’re seen practicing a warrior stance behind a warrior statue.

Last but not least, it’s worth mentioning that in addition to Twilight and Breaking Dawn, the couple has also dabbled in musical theatre. Along with Collins, they starred in a West End production of Twelfth Night in 2018, which also featured Hugh Laurie and Rebecca Ferguson. Though the show didn’t run very long, it was extended twice due to popular demand and ended up running for nearly three weeks. The following year, they starred in a production of Cabaret, which also features Bill Condon, at London’s National Theatre. The play is set in 1930s Germany and follows a group of desperate socialites as they look for sadistic sex on Lord Göring’s sly yacht, the Bagravi.
