As we saw in Zack Snyder’s new-look Batman v Superman (BvS), a dark-skinned Batman is going to be a HUGE part of the upcoming DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In BvS, Batman is played by Ben Affleck and takes on the role of the Dark Knight, which is arguably one of the most iconic characters in comics. In the BvS universe, Batman is the product of a secret government project that mixes science and magic, and he has dark skin as a symbol of that mixture. What’s more is he wears a mask to cover his scars from having his face horribly disfigured in a Chemical attack as a child.
Now, it seems like the plan is to carry that same concept over to another character in the DC Comics Universe: Robert Pattinson’s Quicksilver. According to a new report from Vanity Fair, when Warner Bros. bought the rights to make a Quicksilver movie in 2014, they gave the role of the Scarlet Witch to Elizabeth Olsen and had Robert Pattinson play the role of Marvel Comics’ Quicksilver. Since then, Vanity Fair reports, Rob has been training hard to play the role to perfection.
However, Quicksilver is a trickster character who can shapeshift and become anyone or anything he wants. In the comics, Quicksilver’s power is considered to be as great as that of the Hulk or Superman. Thus, it isn’t necessarily a stretch to believe that Robert Pattinson could legitimately play an alien in the upcoming DC Comics Universe entries. And, since we don’t know much about the DCEU at this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to what kind of alien Quicksilver will turn into!
Will Quicksilver Be Shapeshifting?
So far, in the trailers for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, it looks like Robert Pattinson’s Quicksilver has mostly displayed his powers through shapeshifting. In Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark talks about how the government is now aware that there are superhumans in the world, and it is up to Steve Rogers to keep this information a secret. When asked if he should tell Cap about his powers, Tony replies, “I don’t know. I think I’ll be better off not knowing.”
In X-Men: Apocalypse, we see the character taking on multiple forms, including a spider, bird, and insect. It seems like this is something he does a lot in the comics, which is why it makes sense that he’d want to portray it in a film. However, the best form he takes on in that particular scene is that of a giant scorpion, which is pretty awesome.
It would be cool to see Robert Pattinson pull off a full-blown shapeshifting scene in a movie–especially since he’s wearing a mask most of the time. It would certainly add a new dimension to his acting prowess!
At this point, it’s unclear if Robert Pattinson will play a trickster character or a serious one. While he’s been training for this role for years and has worked hard to make sure he nails the part, it’s also clear from the trailers that the character isn’t exactly known for his seriousness. But, if the character turns out to be more comedic, it would be the best thing for both him and the movie. After all, a funny Quicksilver movie would be so much more attractive to audiences than a serious one!
Will Robert Pattinson Play a Character From the Marvel Comics Universe?
One of the best things about DC’s new films is that they don’t just focus on the properties that they own. In general, the DCEU treats characters from different universes with respect, and even features characters from other brands, such as Marvel Comics, in some of their films. For example, both Spiderman and Batman feature in The Amazing Spiderman 2, and it seems like this is something that will continue in future DCEU films.
Since we don’t know much about the DCEU yet, this could mean that Robert Pattinson will not just be playing a character from the Marvel Comics Universe, but one that is heavily associated with it.
The best part of DC’s approach to different heroes and monsters from other universes is that it adds a layer of mystery and excitement to their films. For instance, we don’t know much about Harley Quinn other than the fact that she’s the Joker’s girlfriend. But, since her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn has become one of DC’s most popular and iconic characters. Similarly, while we know a lot about Black Panther, that character is one of the most famous African superheroes, and he first appeared in 1966. Since then, the character has gone on to become a trend-setter in the African-American comic book industry and a role model for young people.
However, if Robert Pattinson turns out to be a completely different character from any of the ones we’ve seen so far in the DCEU, then that would be a major disappointment. But, as long as the trailers and footage look good, we’ll certainly be looking forward to seeing more from the Marvel Comics Universe in the DCEU!
