ROBERT PATTINSON stars in the upcoming movie, "The Walk" and he was kind enough to sit down with Jon Stewart on his weekly television show. Check out what they had to say about the movie and the making of it below.
On his first day of shooting, Rob called me from the set and he was like, "Hey, man, it's your first day on set and I just wanted to let you know that it was great to work with you and we really appreciate all your help." And I was like, "No problem, man. I'm glad I could help." And then he was like, "Hey, man, have a great day."
We were shooting in L.A. and he was like, "Hey, man, have a good one, you know. It was great to see you." And I was like, "Oh, yeah, thanks. You too." And then he was like, "You know, when I have a good day on set, I feel like I can have a good day off set. So I hope you have a good day and I look forward to working with you again."
The Making of ‘The Walk’
It was a crazy ride. When we first got the call to make the movie, it was right after Robert Pattinson had finished shooting "Twilight" and he was like, "Man, I need a vacation. Will someone please book me a flight to Rome?" And so I was like, "Well, can we put you on a bus or a plane to Rome and then you can walk from the airport to the hotel?" Like, how long does it take to walk from an airport to a hotel in Rome? He was like, "I don't know. It takes me about 45 minutes, maybe. So I guess we'll just have to make it an hour-and-a-half movie."
All of a sudden, we were in Italy. We had this amazing time there. It was unreal. We were shooting in this beautiful city and it was just such a cultural experience and we were really happy to be there. It was like a dream.
When we got back, I was like, "You know what? Let's just do a short film and see what we can come up with. You can star in it and we can call it, "The Making of The Walk" or "A short film about a walk to Rome." Like, let's make it something different. Let's see what happens when you combine the great beauty of Italy with the quick wit of the United States."
So we did that and it kind of took off. We did another one with Jennifer Lawrence and it was amazing to see what she could come up with in such a short amount of time. It was a great experience. We got to work with these amazing directors and writers and it really helped bring the characters to life. It was definitely a team effort. I had a blast doing it. Since then, I've been asked to be a part of a couple more short films and it's been a total blast. It's really opened up new doors for me. It was a great decision to do that. I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new challenge. You'll have a good time. Even if you don't act, you can always be an assistant director or a stand-in.
Actors VS Producers
When you're dealing with big names like this, it can be really tricky to know who to listen to and who to trust when making a film. There are so many people who could fuck it up. You could put a great director or writer or amazing cinematographer in charge of a project and they could fuck it up just as easily as they could make it great. It's so important to find people who love telling stories and who have a good sense of humor. It really helps when matching with the other side because they have to listen to you and understand your vision and what you want out of the project. It takes a lot of trust to put your full faith in somebody else, but it pays off. It's been a real confidence builder for me to know that I can trust these people and be myself around them because they appreciate my humor and my stories. It builds a level of comfort that makes it easier to bring my A-game. Even when things get stressful, I can always turn to these people and they won't let me down. They've been with me every step of the way and it shows. That's what great collaborators are for. You can always find somebody to help you out and it's good to have friends in low places.
Robert Pattinson: A True Romantic
I think what makes Robert so great is that he is such a romantic. It's not just about the ladies, which I think a lot of guys can relate to. He has these amazing romantic moments with Kristen in the film and it just shows how much he cares. He's a genuinely romantic guy and I think that's what makes him special. I also think that when he plays a romantic character, he totally nails it. He shows a different side to his acting, but he still retains that intensity that he brings to his leading roles. It's not just about the sex appeal, although he definitely has that too. It's about who he is as a person and how he treats other people. When we were shooting that scene in the bar with Lilly, I literally teared up. Robert has such a romantic side and he totally gets that sweetness from Kristen. I don't think you can teach someone how to be a romantic. You either have it or you don't.
How To Act Romantic
Romantic scenes can be tricky, but you can always find a way to bring them to life. It truly is about the details. It's so easy to just say, "Hey, let's do a romantic scene. Where do you want to go and what do you want to do?" For me, it's all about the dialogue. You have to ensure that everything is perfect and that everything flows smoothly. It can be really tough to write the perfect lines, but the pay-offs can be wonderful. When things are going well, it can be easy to forget how much work went into making it happen. You have to remind yourself of that because it can be easy to lose focus during a long shoot. It can also help to have somebody help you out. Especially somebody who has been in the industry a while and can give you some advice on romance. You could also ask a member of the audience who knows a thing or two about romance. The point is to find as many angles as possible and to make it as realistic as possible. The more you can do, the more it will come across as realistic. That's what makes for a good romance movie. You can write a sappy love letter to your partner or just tell them how you feel. It truly is about having the right words. Sometimes, the simplest things are the most effective. For me, I find that watching romantic movies and listening to romantic songs helps me to romanticize life. It makes it easier to be romantic and, at least for now, easier to let go of my fears.
