Award-winning actor and musician Robert Pattinson wears many hats – from musician to actor to humanitarian. And, as fans of the Twilight Saga know, he also wears a hat as the official ambassador of natural beauty brand Urban Decay. While he’s been a supporter of the brand for years, it was only recently that they named him their new global face.

The Humanitarian

While the world is still recovering from the pandemic, the 53-year-old English actor and musician has been busy giving back. Between March 20 and April 17, he hosted a series of concerts in London to raise funds for victims of the pandemic. Over a million people attended the various shows, which featured some of the biggest names in music – from Ed Sheeran to Taylor Swift. In addition to his music career, he’s also a published author with a new book out now. And, as we mentioned above, he’s also a spokesperson for a beauty brand. But, as he puts it, he’s “not just a face” for Urban Decay. “I am a face, but I’m also an ambassador for a charity. I’m a spokesman for a shoe brand. I’m a brand ambassador for a hair product,” he told Vogue, adding: “I never want to be just a face.”

The Fashion Ambassador

Though he’s rarely dressed in full-on fashion, when he is, it is always on the red carpet. And perhaps it is this connection to fashion that has led to his newest role as the global face of cosmetic company Urban Decay. While the company has featured celebrities in the past, it’s rarely had one live in the household name capacity that Pattinson now occupies. In fact, since the 1950s, Urban Decay has mostly been associated with rough trade and counterculture. It wasn’t until recently that the company decided to “clean up” its image, according to CEO Len Peltier. “We were looking for a face that would embody our modern, masculine, anti-establishment image,” he said in an interview with WWD. “We looked at models, and then we looked at people who were not models.”

Peltier added that he and his team eventually settled on Robert Pattinson after he showed “inspiration and promise as a spokesperson.” For the past year, the English actor has been busy jetting around the world for Urban Decay, appearing in commercials and in-store advertisements. But, as he told InStyle: “I’m not a brand ambassador, I don’t have a marketing budget, and I don’t have a team. This is just me. It’s not an easy task, so I might not be able to respond to every request, but I’ll do my best. To be honest, it’s amazing that they chose me in the first place, because I’ve never really felt like a face. I always feel like a person with a face.”

The Musician

Pattinson has been involved in music his whole life, and he’s always looked to it as an outlet for creative expression. Back in 2014, he released a mixtape called Moonwalk, which consisted of songs he had written and recorded in his kitchen. On it, he revealed the then-untitled first single:

“I wake up and I make coffee / And then I go to the back door / And I open it up and I feel the rays / Of the rising sun,” he sang. “It’s the first time / I’ve ever felt like the stars / Have aligned. / I’m not really sure / Why it happened, but I swear / They must’ve heard / My voice and they decided / To give it to me.”

While the song wasn’t officially released until later that year, it was eventually added to the setlists of many of his solo concerts, including two sold-out shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. He also performed it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In addition to Moonwalk, he has released two more mixtapes, Twilight (2018) and Villains (2019). In the former, he tackles the “Twilight Saga” – namely, the 1991 movie adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling novel, Twilight. In the latter, he covers songs by some of his favorite contemporary artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Sia, and Travis Scott.

The Author

In addition to his music career, Pattinson is also the author of a number of books. His debut album, Pattinson, was released in 2018, four years after his second album, Bespoke. He started out with a bang – his second album went straight to No. 1 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Rock Albums charts. The former also spawned the hit single “Pattinson,” which reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

While the 41-year-old Englishman has been busy preparing for the 2020 release of his upcoming third album, he has also been working on a musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. He’ll be playing the role of Jay Gatsby, and he’s also set to star in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann-directed film version of the beloved novel. It’s been a whirlwind couple of years for Pattinson.
