Hollywood star Robert Pattinson is rarely seen in public these days without his trademark jaunty jumpsuit. The 25-year-old actor has been dressing, mostly, in men’s clothing for the last five years—from his choice of t-shirts to his signature black jeans. However, despite his laid-back style, Pattinson hasn’t always dressed comfortably in men’s clothing. In fact, the Kill Them All star spent a lot of his early years in Hollywood trying to find his way in the biz, and this is how he dressed back then.
The Early Years
Pattinson was born in London to a family of artists. His grandfather was an illustrator, and his father is an author. As a child, he moved around a lot, living in Singapore and Paris before settling in London at the age of 10. During this time, he had to make some tough choices about his clothes. “I used to wear my dad’s clothes because he was six foot five and had a big belly. I also loved his red suspenders,” Pattinson said in an interview with Wonderland magazine. “I remember feeling a bit confused because I didn’t feel like myself.”
Pattinson tried on many different styles during his school years, but he never felt completely comfortable in them. “I had long hair at the time, so I would wear it down on one side and pull it back with a hair band. I wore really thick black mascara that would accentuate my eyelashes. I didn’t like the clothes my dad wore—mostly his old t-shirts with holes in them—so I used to steal his trousers and wear them instead,” he admitted. “I was never very confident, so I would play up to one side to get attention.”
In Hollywood
Once he graduated from university, Pattinson headed to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. There, he worked the bar scene and tried his hand at acting, but he soon realized that he wasn’t built for the limelight. “It’s pretty clear that I wasn’t meant to be an actor. I was meant to be a singer. In fact, I have a perfect pitch, and I used to accompany myself on the piano when I was young. This is something that I always wanted to do,” he told Wonderland. “I love making people laugh. I would definitely do impressions of comedians and sitcom characters.”
This is probably how Pattinson would have ended up singing (or at least playing the piano for) if it weren’t for Twilight. The blockbuster vampire saga made him a household name, and he hasn’t looked back since. He is arguably the most famous British actor of his generation, and he is one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood today. He has millions of fans around the world, and he still holds the title of “Sexiest Man Alive”.
Style Evolution
As his career progressed, Pattinson’s style evolved along with it. He began wearing more expensive items, which he likely purchased with his sizable earnings. He has been photographed wearing Chanel, Dior, and Valentino outfits, among others. In general, though, he has preferred to keep his wardrobe simple and mostly made up of casual clothing items, such as jean jackets, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. He also frequently wears Nike sneakers, and he has designed a line of clothes for the athletic brand. The designer Kate Spade even named her label after him.
In addition to designing clothes, Pattinson has also used his platform to call for increased gender equality. The actor and activist has been active in supporting numerous charity: water campaigns, which aim to bring clean drinking water to disadvantaged communities. In 2018, he even invested in a new Wello water dispenser, which he uses to help save water in his own home (he also uses a different brand of water, Evian, for the rest of his home).
The Jumpsuit
Pattinson has been wearing jean jackets and blue jeans for the majority of his adult life. The style choices are largely down to his preference for a laidback lifestyle, and he has preferred to keep the fashion choices simple. Nevertheless, the British actor has experimented with a number of styling options, including short-lived grunge and goth looks. He also owns multiple pairs of sneakers and has regularly swapped out his jeans for more casual trousers. In general, though, he prefers to keep things comfortable and comfortable.
This approach has served him well, and he has rarely been photographed without a smile on his face.
Where Will He Go From Here?
Pattinson’s current film, The Man Who Loved Birds, marks the actor’s directorial debut. He plays the dual role of Nick, a photographer who documents the lives of strangers, and Jack, a man he meets after photographing Nick. While the film is set for release next year, we know little else about it other than its title. This is likely because, at the time of publication, the film hasn’t yet been released.
What is certain, however, is that we will see more of Robert Pattinson in the coming years. The star is currently filming the sequel to 2018’s horror film, High-Rise, and there are rumors that he will also star in the next installment of the IT Crowd franchise. Furthermore, given that he is currently one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, it is almost certain that he will be appearing in a number of major motion pictures. After all, who else would director George Mickley cast in his latest project, The Man Who Loved Birds, other than America’s most famous gingerbread man?
