If you follow celebrities on social media, you’ll probably have seen a lot of images of the “new” Robert Pattinson. The actor debuted a fuller, darker hairdo in June 2019 and has since been rocking the style in a variety of different looks. While it’s easy to assume that all of the hairstyle choices are a result of his work on the set of the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate (which is set for release in October), there’s more to it than that.

Batman Is A Great Place To Get Hairy

In the 2019 film Batman, director Matt Reeves showed us a future where Bruce Wayne has evolved his look. Nowadays, the billionaire playboy dons a full-blown moustache and a thick head of hair. This is a marked difference from the earlier scenes in the 1995 blockbuster, where Wayne was clean-shaven.

The 2019 film isn’t the first time that Wayne has been depicted with facial hair. The actor/director/writer has been wearing a mustache since at least 2006, when he played a drug dealer in the acclaimed drama A Dirty Shame. Perhaps Reeves was inspired by Christian Bale’s turn as the Caped Crusader in the 2008 film Year One (2008), where the actor sported a full, bushy beard and a prominent nose ring. And let’s not forget about Michael Keaton, who played Batman in the 1989 movie Batman.

The Inspiration For Reeves’ Film

The 2019 film is an origin story that details how Bruce Wayne became the Dark Knight. The story focuses on his descent into alcoholism and the resulting conflict that he faces with his parents. The screenplay was written by Kelly Marcel and Reeves himself. “I had wanted to write a movie about Bruce Wayne for a long time,” he once said. “I started exploring the idea of a grown-up version of Dick Grayson. I thought it would be fun to see how he would deal with the pressures of being a grown-up while still trying to be as helpful to Batman as possible.”

Marcel’s Inspiration For The Look

If you’ve seen Kelly Marcel’s Broadway play I, Tonya, you’ll know that she has a thing for men with beards. The actress played the title character and wore a stunning dress and matching hat as she stood next to her female co-star as they posed for photos. It was a memorable performance, and it seems that it wasn’t just the costumes that caught the attention of the audience. As mentioned, Christian Bale and Michael Keaton both sported full beards in their respective portrayals of Batman, and the two actors shared a scene together where they fought. In that scene, Keaton threw a punch, and somehow landed a blow on Bale’s jaw. The actor/director/writer later revealed that he was inspired by an angry mobster character that he had earlier played in the 1992 film The Godfather. The character sported a similar full-blown moustache, and it was clear that he had been in a fight.

Why Are Movies Still Trying To Tell Us What To Do With Our Hairy Faces?

There’s nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned tug on the beard. But in today’s world, beards aren’t just for pulling. They’re for showing off. With the rise of the “man bun” and the “pom pom” (a hairstyle created by rapper T.I. for his Grand Hustle album), men have been experimenting with their hair for years. And though we may not always see the results we want, one thing is for certain: it’s opened up a world of new opportunities for men. Women now have hair products designed specifically for them. And even if we don’t always like what the world is telling us with their hairdos, at least we know what they’re saying. Just watch the videos on TikTok.
