I think all of us have a soft spot for Robert Pattinson. He is one of the most popular actors of our time and his charm and boyish good looks have made him an unlikely heartthrob. He has starred in a variety of films and been in many high-profile relationships but he has never been really famous for his acting. That is until now. We will be seeing a lot more of Pattinson in 2017 and it looks like he is finally stepping out of his comfort zone. I think it is safe to say that a lot has changed since the Twilight star started acting in films like the 2013 Sundance hit, On the Road. That is also the case with his latest film, the 2017 Sundance hit, Good Morning, Mr. President!
What better way to showcase this emerging talent than by giving him the role of the Joker in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation, The Joker. It is amazing how far he has come in such a short amount of time. It seems only yesterday that we were all lamenting his decision to quit acting or better yet, to stop acting like a vampire, and now here he is playing the most iconic character in the history of cinema. Even better, Joker will be released in the same year as Doctor Strange and it looks like we are in for a Christmas movie overload in the coming months.
The Joker Is One Of The Most Iconic Characters In All Of Cinema
It is safe to say that the Joker is one of the most memorable characters in all of cinema. He was created by the great Harry Lloyd in 1939 and since then, no actor has been able to capture the terrifying essence of the comic book character like Robert Pattinson. It is not just his physical appearance that makes him such an interesting character to play, it is his complete lack of empathy that sets him apart from other villains. It is clear that his journey to get here was not an easy one. The Joker had to survive a plane crash in Brazil, live in a retirement home for a few years, and then take a bus to a mental asylum to begin his transformation. All of this to become the iconic villain that he is today.
The Joker is often imitated but no one has ever been able to truly capture his essence. Robert Pattinson’s performance as the Joker will no doubt land him an Academy Award nomination, if not win, and let’s be honest, what else could he possibly need to achieve? Well, if you’ve never really understood the appeal of the Joker, then this may be the film for you. It looks like 2017 will be the year of the Joker and no one will be able to resist playing the iconic villain once he makes his debut in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation, The Joker.
Why Is Joker Set In The 70s?
As much as I would love to see the Joker in all of his glory, there is one thing that sets this story apart from any other version of the character and it has to do with the setting. One of the hallmarks of the Joker’s journey in the comics has always been his time period. He was first introduced in the early forties and right away, we are plunged into a flashback that takes us to the late 1930s. It seems that Warner Bros. knew exactly what they were doing when they set this version of the story in the 1970s. This is the kind of story that would have been impossible to tell in the 1930s as the social mores of the time would not have allowed it. So, they changed the setting to explore this very concept.
It is interesting how they were able to find a unique setting for the story while still keeping the essence of the Joker. This is why I love this particular adaptation so much, they were able to create a compelling story while still paying homage to one of the greatest comic characters of all time.
Who Else Is In The Cast?
There is a who else in the cast of The Joker that I think deserves a shout out. I know it is a bit early to be making any kind of predictions but I would be remiss if I did not mention him. I am of course talking about the incomparable Bernard White, everyone’s favorite English professor from Amherst. He is the perfect choice to play the part of Dr. Harlow, the psychologist that guides the Joker through his transformation. It is going to be fascinating to see how Professor White’s unique perspective on life affects the way that the Joker sees the world. It is also wonderful to have John Leguizamo in the film. His character, Arthur Fleck, is the corrupt political cop who tries to arrest the Joker. It is always such a thrill to see him perform, he completely embodies the character and brings a unique flavor to the role. It is clear that he has a lot of fun playing a villain. He even gets to ham it up a little bit with Robert Pattinson. It is great to see them have some fun together on the screen even if it is for a villainous role. Finally, I would like to mention the legendary Jackie Chan. It seems that the film’s director, Todd Phillips, wanted to include a few cameo appearances by famous faces from Hong Kong cinema. It is amazing what a cameo can do for your IMDb rating, trust me. He plays the part of one of the Joker’s henchmen, Cheng, and he does a brilliant job. It is clear that he has a lot of fun playing against type and this is exactly what makes him such a valuable part of the film. Even if you have never heard of him before, you will immediately recognize his talents when you see him on screen.
So, there you have it, now that you know all about one of the most intriguing films of the coming year, it is time for you to make your decision on whether or not to see it. I hope that this article has helped make your decision easier and I wish you good luck in choosing the film that will inspire you.
