“Goodnight, my angel,” is one of the most memorable songs from the 2017 movie, Goodnight Moon. The song is so iconic that it even earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the “most quoted song in a Disney film.”

The movie, based on the best-selling children’s book of the same name by Margaret Bodde, follows the adventures of an imaginative young girl named Violet as she sleeps over at her great aunt’s house one night and has a dream about a monster coming into her room. The next day, the monster actually arrives and crashes the party, leading to a series of hilarious and heartwarming interactions amongst the family members.

While the song itself is undoubtedly charming, it’s not the first time Pattinson has sung for the camera. He’s actually quite the accomplished singer-songwriter, and has recorded several albums of gorgeous, haunting folk-pop songs.

If you’re unfamiliar, here’s a little bit about the singer:

Pattinson was born and raised in London to a working-class family. He spent his childhood listening to his parents’ opera records and singing in the shower. He studied illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art and then pursued acting. He made his acting debut in 2008 with a role in the British series, Dance Academy. He then went on to play the lead in the 2012 Guy Ritchie film, Rocknrolla, and he appeared in the 2016 indie film, High-Rise.

Pattinson’s songs have been recorded by artists such as Bon Iver, Brandi Carlile, and Mitsuki Uchino. Most recently, he released his album, Self-Portrait, in 2018. It features gorgeous, anthemic pop songs that blend electronic and folk sounds.

Considering all this, it’s probably no surprise that Disney chose Pattinson to sing the film’s iconic “Goodnight, my angel” song. It’s such a fitting choice and I can’t think of a more suitable performer. Pattinson’s low, baritone voice perfectly captures Violet’s timid yet endearing feelings as she bumbles her way through the song. It’s a small role, but he makes it his own with his soulful delivery.

It’s easy to see why this song is so memorable. It’s genuinely funny, and it also manages to be touching. I mean, come on, who doesn’t have a soft spot for an adorable, child-like character like Violet? I know I do. It would be such a shame if this little girl’s story ended after only one cinematic night. Luckily, we have this incredible song to remember her by.

Why It’s One of the Best Movie Songs Ever

Let’s get back to that song now. As mentioned, it’s not Pattinson’s first time singing for the camera. He actually recorded his own version of this song back in 2008 called “Tranquil,” which you can hear on his eponymously titled album. (Incidentally, “Tranquil” was also used as the theme song to the British TV series, A.C.O.D.).

Pattinson’s version is a completely different animal to the one in Goodnight Moon. “Tranquil” is a more jaunty piece, with springtime instruments and a brighter, more uplifting atmosphere. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad song, per se, but it’s definitely not as memorable as “Goodnight, My Angel.”

It was certainly a wise decision to reuse this song. By doing so, Disney ensured that “Tranquil” would be easily associated with the film. It’s such a touching moment when Violet first utters the line, “Goodnight, my angel,” and then bursts into this song. It not only provides us with another dose of the gorgeous, haunting melodies we’ve come to love, but it also serves as a link to an earlier chapter in the girl’s life. It’s a beautiful example of film songs reminding us of stories we love from our childhood. (I’m sure many of you reading this remember the movie The Sandman, where the titular character uses a similar song to lull himself to sleep at the end of Act 1.)

What’s Next for Robert Pattinson

There is no question that Pattinson’s music career has been a success so far. He’s arguably one of the biggest names in British music, and he’s also won several awards for his songwriting and recording work. It would be a great shame if this all ended with one cinematic flop. Fortunately, we have news that his next project will be a dramatic thriller titled, Deep Creek. It is due out in theaters in early 2020 and will mark the first time he’s acted in a leading role in a Hollywood film. (He will also co-star with Kate Bosworth, brother of the infamous Justin Timberlake.)

For now, though, we can enjoy this stunning new song by Pattinson and his band, as they perform it live at the 2019 Grammys.

If you’ve never given much thought to British music, or if you only know the names Kate Bush, George Harrison, and Roger Waters, consider this your lucky day. There are some truly gifted songwriters and musicians over there. Pattinson’s album, Self-Portrait, is a great place to start if you’re looking to broaden your music knowledge. Or, for that matter, if you just want to hear some truly stunning songs. Either way, thanks for reading! I hope this has been as enjoyable and educational for you as it has been for me.
