Actor, producer, and artist Robert Pattinson held a press conference today in London to promote his upcoming film, Good Time. The film will be released in theaters on August 9th and will be available on VOD on August 12th. The actor was in London to promote the film as part of the Good Time press tour.

Pattinson discussed a number of topics during his press conference including the inspiration for his latest film, working with filmmaker Gus Van Sant, and collaborating with musicians. The actor also briefly addressed the recent breakup of his engagement to model and actress Jenny Shaines.

Inspiration For The Film

Pattinson’s third feature film is set in Los Angeles in 1981, the height of the Hollywood disco era. The actor discussed how he came up with the idea for Good Time:

  • I had a lot of fun making Dusk Till Dawn and Believer, and I wanted to make something that was just as exciting as the previous two movies. So, I started thinking about what would happen if I got a hold of a time machine. I would go back in time and, you know, have some adventures. So, that’s kind of how it started.
  • I wanted to do something more realistic, something that felt more like real life so when the idea for this one came about, I knew it was the right fit. I wanted to do something about the ‘70s, about how people behaved and how they acted.
  • When you work in film, a common theme is that things don’t always go according to plan. So, I really wanted to explore that story, how things don’t turn out the way we expect them to.

Working With Gus Van Sant

Pattinson is best known for his work with director Gus Van Sant on the indie films Dusk Till Dawn and Believer. The English actor discussed how working with the American filmmaker has changed his entire perspective on filmmaking:

  • I had a really clear picture in my head of how the next two movies were going to look exactly like each other, and I was going to work with the same director. And then, I met Gus and he blew my mind. Not only is he a brilliant director, but he also has this absolute eye for detail. Everything that happens in his movies is so exact, so it was like, “Oh my God, this is amazing!”
  • It was just a really positive experience working with him because he has this way of making you feel like you’re the most important person in the room even when you’re just standing there with your camera. He’s very motivating and makes you feel like, “Yeah, this is a good idea!” And then he makes you feel like a total badass, even when your camera isn’t even rolling.
  • He has a real eye for detail, which comes in really handy when you’re shooting on a set because he will point out things that you could’ve done differently. He will criticize your work but at the same time, he will praise you for doing something right. He really is the best of both worlds—a brilliant director and a critic.

Collaboration And Challenges Of Making Movies

Pattinson is known for his eclectic musical taste and for regularly collaborating with musicians on film and TV projects. During his press conference, the actor discussed how he came to work with Adele on the music video for her single, “Hello’”:

  • When I first heard the song, I loved it, and I wanted to give it a music video so we could have something a little different. I’ve always said that I don’t really have a typical taste in music, so I wanted to work with someone whose music I didn’t already know, someone new for me. And then, Adele reached out to me. I had never worked with her before, but she is a really sweet person and a brilliant singer so when she offered to sing for us, I was like, “Okay, sure!” And then, we got to work. It was the most fun I’ve had making a music video so far, and it’s totally due to her and the collaboration that we were able to pull off something that was so different from what we normally do.
  • It was a real adventure, and it was something that I’ve never done before. Normally, I work alone in my trailers, but when we were in the studio, I would be locked away with my earphones while she would be singing in front of me. I was just sitting there with my guitar, playing, and watching her. It was the most fun I’ve had making a music video and I’m so grateful to her for that.

Jenny Shaines

While we were still waiting for Pattinson to begin his press conference, news surfaced that his engagement to model and actress Jenny Shaines had recently ended. The couple had been together for ten years and had a daughter, Matilda, who was born in 2010. When asked about Shaines by a journalist from The Daily Telegraph, Pattinson said:

  • “I love her very much and I’m so glad that we were able to work things out. We’re still friends, and I think that that’s the most important thing. We’ll always have that bond, that love that we share for each other.”
  • The main challenge was just trying to be good to each other when we were fighting so much. We had been through a lot together. We had been through a lot of ups and downs in our relationship, but we were still committed to each other. The most important thing is that we came through it together and that we are still friends. I think that’s why it lasted as long as it did. It wasn’t easy, but we made it work. We had a lot of heartache, but we also had a lot of happiness. We were lucky to experience those ten years with each other because it’s not every day that you find someone who will stick by your side through thick and thin.
  • I love her and I’m so excited to be with her. I’m looking forward to our future together, building a life with her, being a family, and being happy.

After the press conference, a journalist from The Guardian asked, “Is it hard being such a prominent figure in the public eye?” Pattinson replied, “I don’t really like to think about it that way. I don’t see myself as that prominent a figure or, at least, I don’t want to be. It’s not something that I focus on. I am happy that people seem to like what I do, but I try not to think about it too much. I’ve never really found my niche in movies. I’ve always tried to do different things, but it seems that’s not going to happen much longer. I am open to different opportunities, though. I am not limited by what I’ve done before. I just want to do things that excite me.”
