The film, which premiered in Venice in September and won the Golden Lion, follows the story of a troubled woman (Mia Wasikowska) on the hunt for her kidnapped daughter’s killer. While on the run from the law, she crosses paths with a seemingly normal guy (Jim Carrey) who, in reality, is the anti-Christ. It also stars Jude Law, Gemma Arterton, and Harvey Keitel.
Wasikowska, who received widespread acclaim for her performance, said of the film: “What I love about the script is that it is so different from any other movie I’ve ever done. David Cronenberg is one of the greatest film directors of all time, so it was wonderful to be able to work with him on a project. I think people will be pleasantly surprised by how daring and unique this film is.”
The director had this to say about the new adaptation: “The novel has had a profound impact on my work, particularly as I see it as a metaphor for addiction. For this new adaptation I wanted to explore the nature of obsession and desire, the unreason that can consume us.
