In the past few years, we have seen many of our fave celebs’ faces change as they’ve aged. But not so with Robert Pattinson. Even now, at 33 years old, he still has the same gorgeous face that we’ve all come to love. Not a wrinkle in sight. Not a single one.
Pattinson is set to play a pivotal role in Cosmopolis, a new David Cronenberg movie that’s getting rave reviews. Directed by Cronenberg himself, the film follows a wealthy man (Pattinson) who is the last of his kind as he witnesses the slow disappearance of his city. The movie is currently in theaters, and we caught up with the Twilight actor to talk about his new movie and that age gap between them.
On Aging And How He Felt On Set:
“I would say that on the whole, I’ve felt great. I’ve been really lucky,” he told us. “I’ve never really felt that I had to rush anything, or worry about looking old, or worrying about my looks, or how people would perceive me. I just sort of always felt like I could sit back and enjoy my life. So, when you get older, you just have to learn to take your time. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. You have to be smart about it.”
While it’s good to hear that Pattinson is living his best life, we’re still not convinced that he’s fully embraced his newfound maturity. Even now, he often gives us some PDA (physical-contact-ish behavior), which is incredibly endearing. But we also get the sense that he’s holding back a little bit, or at least playing it cool.
“I think everyone on set felt the same,” he admitted. “I think we all got along really well, and we enjoyed the experience. I think we all wanted to have fun with this movie, and make it as good as we could.”
As much as we want to see Pattinson’s life change for the better, we know that he’s still got a long way to go before he can truly become the man he needs to be, off-camera and on-screen. The pressure is on him to grow up, and act his age. And we think he’s still trying to figure it out, which is why he hasn’t really changed much on screen, outside of the occasional tattoo, and a haircut. (We’re looking at you, Rogue.) But maybe in Season Two of the HBO show, he’ll let his guard down, and be a little more open about his past struggles. We’re rooting for him.
On The Purity Of Love:
“It was very romantic,” he said, when asked about the portrayal of love in the upcoming flick, which primarily focuses on their on-again-off-again relationship. “We all felt very pure, romantic feelings for each other, and wanted to portray that beautifully.”
Pattinson plays a very wealthy young man who enjoys throwing lavish parties in his New York City mansion. Cronenberg’s most recent film, A Dangerous Method, was also about a wealthy playboy who throws lavish parties. And if you thought there was a connection between the director and the character, then you’d be right. (Fans of the book might also know that the source material for that film was adapted from an Ernest Hemingway novella.) So it seems like the theme of wealthy playboys throwing lavish parties will be a theme in this movie as well.
Pattinson also discussed his co-star Anna Faris, whom he dubbed, “the best actress of our generation.” (We don’t disagree.) The actress is known for playing totally opposite roles, and has a history of snubbing A-list celebs. But she’s perfectly cast in the role of Pattinson’s love interest, and we get the feeling that she might just have a thing for blue-eyed hotties.
As for whether or not Pattinson has any interest in dating outside of his race, he was quick to shut down those rumors. “I feel like I’ve been very lucky in my life, and I’ve never really felt the need to look elsewhere,” he said. “I’ve always felt that I could spend my whole life with someone I love. I feel like I’ve been very privileged to have had that experience.”
More Film News:
There’s also another new flick that we’ve been dying to talk about, and it’s something that will no doubt affect many of our readers. And that is Black Mass, the newest film from Oscar-winning director, Kevin Smith. (Hey, we all have hobbies.)
The movie is an adaptation of a true story, about a Massachusetts priest named Roger Ebert, who was a true intellectual giant, and who battled alcoholism and depression. (Fun fact: Ebert’s nephew, Owen, directed this movie as well.) In 1966, Ebert was given the task of reviewing a film called Black Power, which was an adaptation of a Chester Himes novel. The film is about a boxer who becomes a gangster in Chicago, and one of the main characters is a Black man named Charlie, played by Michael Ciara. (Yeah, we said it.)
Despite being a Catholic priest, Ebert had to admit that he found the idea of a Black man being heroic intriguing. (We know what you’re thinking — isn’t that why they called him the “pope of film?”) The review was groundbreaking, and changed the way we look at film critics and heroes. (Not to mention his nephew’s career.)
Ebert wrote: “This is one of the most exciting films I have ever seen. It is a powerful masterpiece. I don’t think there is any other word for it. It is a triumph.” (Omfg.) And then he proceeded to give the movie a perfect score, and proclaim it to be one of the greatest films of all time. (More than half a century later, and the film is still considered one of the greatest of all time.)
Charlie, the Black man who inspired the original story, had his moment of fame when Smith included him in a list of the top 50 movie characters of all time in a 2014 listicle. (Ooh, that must have hurt!) And now, Roger Ebert’s nephew has immortalized Charlie in film. Not to mention that Michael’s father is none other than the famous director, Joe Smith.
We have to admit, we’re a little jealous that Michael got to play such a pivotal role in a movie where he’s practically the only white character. (We know, we know — we love watching him play with gadgets and explore the city.) But we’re also happy that the movie is getting such positive attention, and that Michael seems to finally be embracing his inner child.
More On The Twilight Saga:
We can’t leave the Twilight family alone, now can we? (What?)
The saga continues with the highly-anticipated release of the long-awaited sequel, Eclipse. The first movie, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, was a critical and box office success. (Both the book and the movie were #1 New York Times Best Sellers.) But even now, after all this time, we’re still not quite over the shock that Twi-hatch (as we like to call her) revealed to be a she-wolf in the first place. (Wolves! Really?)
It was only a matter of time before the press started speculating about what Stewart and Pattinson’s next project would be. (We’re talking to you, People magazine.) But we have to admit, we’re still not quite over the surprise that Edward Cullen is actually a vampire. (Edward! Really?)
Eclipse continues the story of Bella and her pack as they try to live in harmony with humans. While there’s some romance in the offing in this second installment, (Edward’s latest betrayal is just the start of his plan to suss out Bella’s true nature — you’ll have to watch to find out what that is), ultimately, this is still a story about two wolves trying to be domesticated.
And speaking of surprises, we had no idea that Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob Black in the Twilight films, had such a distinct singing voice. (He’s best known for playing the part of Jacob in the Twilight series, and for his work on the Disney Channel’s Jessie — one of our all-time favorite shows.)
