Wondering who will star in the next big Hollywood blockbuster? Look no further! Here’s your ultimate guide to the upcoming movies, based on your favorite Hollywood celebs.
Walking Dead Season 3
It’s been over a year since the end of Season 2 of Robert Kirkman’s post-apocalyptic zombie drama. The world is still being ravaged by the undead, and Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) is the only one who continues struggling for survival against all odds.
While there are several upcoming projects based on the zombie apocalypse, none of them seem to excite us as much as the third season of AMC’s breakout hit. Based on the popular ‘70s horror movie of the same name, Season 3 will premiere in the autumn of 2020. The trailer for this exciting new installment hints at an even more dangerous and desperate world than ever before. The third season will once again bring an end to the day-to-night time cycle, with much of the action taking place at night.
Black Widow
Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have wrapped up with Infinity War back in 2018, the popularity of the superhero franchise certainly did not fade away. In fact, several spin-offs and prequel movies were released in the meantime. One of these is the third installment of Black Widow, starring Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson).
The character first appeared in the 2011 movie Avengers, which won the prestigious award for best film at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, she has gone on to appear in several other Marvel films, including last year’s Black Panther. Johansson has also lent her voice to several video games, including Spider-Man, as well as the upcoming Avengers: Assemble, which is set for release in April 2021.
Deadpool 2
The Merc with the Mouth is back again, and this time he’s brought friends! Directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, Deadpool 2 is the follow-up to 2016’s mega-hit Deadpool. Much like its predecessor, Deadpool 2 is packed with jokes and quips, while keeping the action sequences and special effects ultra-violent.
The film is set for release on April 20, 2021. So far, the only confirmed cast members are Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, and Briana Hildebrand. However, several other high-profile Hollywood stars reportedly had roles in the sequel, which means we could see more of them in the months and weeks to come.
Mulholland Drive
Kathryn Bigelow’s stunning visual masterpiece has finally been given the cinematic release it deserves. Starring Elle MacLeman as Los Angeles’ most famous bisexual woman, Judy Garland, the film follows her from room to room, taking in the view from seemingly every angle. It’s an ambitious and ground-breaking movie, and one that we can’t recommend enough to both fans of MacLeman and Bigelow herself. The film was selected to represent the US at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it will premiere later this year.
Kingsman: The Great Battle
Speaking of groundbreaking cinema, Matthew Vaughn’s action-adventure film Kingsman: The Great Battle is like nothing you’ve seen before. In this superhero parody, lead actor Colin Firth plays the commander of a squad of supersoldiers who must save the world from an evil despot (Toby Kebbell).
The film, which is set for release in October 2021, is loosely based on the graphic novels of the same name by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Kingsman: The Great Battle will be the first of a planned trilogy, with Firth, alongside Mark Ruffalo and Daisy Ridley, reprising their roles from the first installment. In addition, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, and Hugh Jackman will also return for the follow-up, due out in April 2023.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The latest X-Men movie is shaping up to be one of the biggest of the series so far. Not only is it the first solo outing for Dark Phoenix (played by Jennifer Lawrence), but it will also mark the return of several other beloved stars, including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Rose Byrne. Directed by Simon Kinberg and due for release in February 2022, Dark Phoenix will also be the culmination of years of buildup and anticipation for fans of the genre. The film will once again be packed with action, as well as some awesome set-piece moments that may even rival some of the biggest Marvel movies.
Black Widow: Age of Winter
Continuing with the Marvel movies, let’s not forget about Natasha Romanoff’s other big solo outing, Black Widow: Age of Winter, the final installment of the popular Natasha trilogy. Like its predecessors, this third movie finds Romanoff going head-to-head with the Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan. The finale brings the adventures of the cunning spy and her allies in Tokyo and Malta to a close, as she makes her dramatic return to Russia.
The last we saw of Romanoff, she and the Winter Soldier were escaping to a remote island together, where presumably they will live out the rest of their lives in peace. While the future looks bright for this fascinating character, it is important to remember that the Winter Soldier is still out there, and he isn’t likely to let go of his quest for justice. Not even death will be able to stop him from tracking down Romanoff and seeking revenge. That is likely to be the biggest challenge for her and her allies in the months and weeks to come.
Mowgli: The Awakening
Based on the MGM film franchise of the same name, Mowgli, The Awakening is another film we need to mention. The premiere of this live-action Disney adaptation was recently postponed until October 2021 due to the pandemic. Fortunately, it will now be able to enjoy its theatrical premiere on that date. The movie is directed by Andy Serkis and stars London-born Rohan Chand as the titular character, a man-cub who must leave the jungle and enter human society. Also starring are Nicole Kidman, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina. The film mostly follows the original stories and characters from the 1920s Jungle Book, with some interesting references to Walt Disney’s 1935 animated classic, which will be interesting for fans of both series.
Mowgli: The Awakening will be released in theaters on October 12, 2021.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Finally, let’s not forget about Robert Louis Stevenson’s original 1886 novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of this classic adventure story, which continues to be regarded as one of the most influential works of fiction ever written. Let’s not forget about the amazing performances of James Cagney and Mae West, either, who played the legendary ‘Jekyll’ and ‘Hyde’ respectively. This year also marks the debut of the television series Jinx, which is based on the novel and stars Will Smith, who also served as an executive producer on the project. The series premieres this fall on Fox.
In the fall of 2021, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will be available for audiences to see on the big screen. The movie is scheduled for release on September 25, 2021.
More to Be Announced
There are several other exciting projects on the horizon. The summer of 2021 will mark the premiere of Rian Johnson’s new epic, The Last Jedi, which will conclude the Skywalker saga. The summer of 2022 will bring the second season of Todd Phillips’ gritty crime series, Joker, and the highly anticipated fantasy adaptation, Mulholland Drive. Both are due for release in the summer of 2022. Finally, don’t forget about Peter Rabbit, which will be released in theaters on February 21, 2022, and the animated film Blindspotting, which will be released in theaters on May 23, 2022. Let’s celebrate these upcoming movies by watching some of the biggest box office hits of all time.
