Game Change
Directed by: Jay Roentgen
Starring: John Malkovich, Ed Harris
The 2012 U.S. presidential elections were one of the most highly publicized, and debated, elections in history. As the campaign began to wind down, one of the major issues that arose was the fact that Republican candidate Mitt Romney hadn’t released his tax returns. When asked about this by a reporter, candidate Romney angrily replied, ‘What’s the point? Nobody cares about my financial situation.’ It was then revealed that, actually, the public did care. A lot. This film focuses on the last days of the Romney campaign, as he desperately tries to hold on to his position as President-elect and the media investigates his past as a billionaire businessman. What was supposed to be a victory lap at the end of the film turned into a debacle as the FBI and the Department of Justice launched an official investigation into whether or not Romney had committed any crimes during his time as a corporate raider. The film is a comical but heartbreaking account of the incredible downfall of one of the greatest political leaders of our time. We recommend it for anyone who is interested in the American political process, or just wants to see John Malkovich give one of his best performances.
The Imitation Game
Directed by: Brian Cox
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley
World War II is now over, but its effects are still being felt, particularly in the workplace. With the help of some MIT students and engineers, Alan Turing, an English mathematician, creates a machine that can imitate an intelligent human being. Unfortunately, this machine, known as the Imitation Game, is then used by the government to spy on the population. Turing himself is called upon to analyze the data gathered from the machine and try to determine if it’s actually an artificial intelligence or just a mechanical device. The Imitation Game is named after Turing’s seminal 1952 paper, “Computing Machinery And Intelligence,” in which he first proposed the Turing test, a method of determining the true nature of an AI. If you’re a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch and have an interest in history, this movie might just be for you. It’s an incredible portrayal of Turing’s life, from his early years to the years he spent at war analyzing the German military and coming up with ways to defeat them.
