Saving the best for last, let’s address the elephant in the room: Robert Pattinson’s new look.
The actor, best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, initially debuted the grey hair and bushy beard look back in January 2019 and has since gone on to create more variations. While fans have taken to social media to express their delight at the actor’s new look, others are asking: Is this a new beginning for the ‘Twilight Saga’? What does it mean for the future of Edward Cullen and his love interests?
A Break From Victoria
After four movies and ten years spent portraying the wealthy and sophisticated Edward, it was time for him to explore new roles. He began with a bang – literally – by playing the lead role in the box office smash, The Batman. Directed by Matt Reeves, the dark and gritty ‘Batman’ broke several box office records upon its release in 2018, including the one for biggest domestic opening weekend and biggest IMAX opening weekend. In The Batman, Pattinson plays a billionaire playboy whose obsession with Batman causes him major problems, both personally and professionally.
The film was such a commercial success that it inspired a sequel, The Batman and Robin Tour, which is set to open in theaters on April 18, 2020.
The success of the first ‘Batman’ installment saw its audience increase from 13 million to 17 million, proving that there’s still life in the vampire franchise. And while not every sequel needs to be about fighting crime, it appears that Reeves and Pattinson have another project in the works.
More Than Meets The Eye
In other news, Reeves is set to direct a solo adventure film for Pattinson, who will star as a literary detective in More Than Meets The Eye. The project will be based on a true crime novel by Dave Zelina and will see Pattinson solve a murder case while traveling to Italy.
The story of More Than Meets The Eye will be a departure from the actor’s Twilight work, which tended to focus on the more fantastical aspects of the vampire mythology. He’s also signed on to star in and produce the BBC television series, A Family Affair, a dark comedy set in 1950s England that will air in 2021.
A Bit Of A Nostalgic Trip
While most fans may see this as a break from the vampire franchise, it’s actually a bit of a nostalgia trip for Edward. Not only does it return him to the grey hair and bearded role he first played in Twilight, but it’s also reminiscent of his early acting days, when he primarily played Shakespearean leads and had a completely different look.
